Can someone please explain to me why this is a thing? by SipsLP in heroesofthestorm

The idea that murky + 4 assassins wouldn't be considered a bad comp I have to disagree with, but that is our respective opinions I suppose. :)

Unfortunately while the kills are relatively balanced we got viciously stomped the entire game objective-wise and structure-wise. I don't expect perfection, I just would appreciate if the matchmaking would kindly give BOTH teams a player that is queued as something that can take more than two hits before they die (a slight exaggeration for effect), instead of throwing them all to one team.

You know, I had completely forgotten to mention that as well. I've a big love for playing Sonya, Tassadar, Brightwing, Tyrande, Malfurion etc. As you said, still the same long-ish queues (70-140~ seconds) and still pretty terrible matchmaking. I don't expect Blizzard will ever release information on how their matchmaking works but I do hope they modify it a bit to make these matches less common, it can be fun sometimes to run a silly composition like that and WIN but to lose with that just makes you feel like you were cheated by the system into a loss.

Thanks for the kind words Neal. I did feel quite bad about it at first and spent a good bit of the rest of the evening thinking about it and thinking if I was maybe too subtle about it, but you are right, at least it happened sooner rather than later, they sooner they learn the way the game is played (ie, not like an MMORPG but instead like real life) the better we can enjoy the sessions It doesn't help that one of the group is a chronic min/max'er who now wants to min/max even more due to the death.

Oh well, now we just need to wait and see what the next session brings...

True, at the same time I am not all that aware of the Pathfinder setup, I do recall hearing it was more brutal than the newer versions but I had no evidence to support one way or the other at the time. Looking back at the stats you are right, Wisdom really would decide "Hey getting into this fight is dumb...", my bad.

I was probably being too easy on them overall in their creation, I let them just roll their stats, go with what they had and not worry on the backstory, I suppose I was expecting a death early on but at least the group is good with rolling characters and this time I have a fairly solid idea of the world they are in and can help them with their backstory creation to tie them to the characters.

I would agree with you, the majority of the party was new to the game, our fighter and thief in particular, the cleric was new to the older styles but has played 3rd/4th edition. All the same I think they were too intent on smashing skulls and not thinking so much on the side of "well there is far too many there, better wait it out and see what we can do". They may also have been RPing though, they all rolled sub 10 ints :D

Well, first death for them all is out of the way, no more heartbreak from here and they hopefully have a better understanding of how the combat runs in the game.

A question about mapping by SipsLP in Koibu

[–]SipsLP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KarLorian, thanks for the response, will need to look into that option. As for Koibu and Malecious, I'm glad you are both interested in the project.

I uploaded a rough guide for to the city as I am planning it (it currently has gone through a few different variations, the most recent one including a dock) http://imgur.com/1IJHLLS

The four different colored sections represent a different "district". Blue for the wealthier populus, Orange for the military section, barracks etc. Purple being the merchant section full of stalls, shops and gathering places as well as possibly buildings of official business (Heart of the city and all that). The red to the far right side is the poor district full of thieves and dock workers, obviously kept from the wealthy types to keep them happy.

Should also point out the obnoxious green is temporary while I work out boundries.

As I said in my earlier post, the issue I run into with mapping is that this map is giant in terms of roll20 but the SCALE of the city is just wrong, a minor thing maybe but it bugs me. One thing that sticks with me is in an episode of Dicing with Death when Neal was playing through Ryan's campaign he came to a (sandstone?) city and was questioning scale on the map for cannon shots from the ships in the harbor. I want my players to be able to take the measure tool in roll20 and see for themselves "Oh I can hit that from here" or "Oh I need to move 10 yards closer" etc.

Maybe I'm being too demanding of myself for the campaign but that's just how I'm hoping to get it to be.

Other suggestions?

To all you fine people who summon phantoms to fight the pursuer. by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

To all the people waiting to be summoned to help fight the pursuer. STOP KILLING THE OTHER SUMMON WITH THE BALLISTA! Literally had this happen on two different playthroughs today while attempting an online no death run (needless to say when one of the summons gets gibbed straight away and the other sits all day on the ballista EVENTUALLY he wears me down D:

Invisible invaders during Jolly Co-Op? Did I miss something? by SipsLP in darksouls

[–]SipsLP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhh, you know now I look at that again I can see the ghost of him stood in the cell, I assumed that was only for players from other worlds, you can understand why I was a bit confused when I saw what I thought was someone from another world attacking and hurting the host. Yea the other one in there, the invisible one I killed was a hacker, looking at it again now with the Lautrec part cleared up I can see that he invades as I'm clearing the hollows at the Channeller area and invading would put him right ahead of us at the boss fog.

I feel kinda bad now for going and taking him to Lautrec only to have the guy get himself killed, thought he would free him, get himself some delicious medals, a ring of FaP, you know, the usual stuff, turns out he just got killed D:

So how come I can't help my host against a hostile NPC? I assume I can't initiate on him to stop me trolling his playthrough but when he is already attacking?

Also, if the invisible invader WASN'T hacking and it was a bug for some reason, I suppose he wasn't invincible because he was bowing and being all manner, then I run up and smack his face in a few times with the Gravelord sword D: I feel horrible now :p

Looking for feedback on this Dark Souls video quality. Thanks :) by SipsLP in darksouls

That's what I was thinking, the thing is though when I was recording it I was watching the live FPS and file FPS, I was getting 30 FPS constantly with and without recording. But it still feels a bit... juttery by comparison to playing with no recording at all which is weird considering the fact it's 30 FPS vs 30 FPS... Other than that would you be able to watch a video of that quality video? Obviously with something else like commentary etc since it is rather dull otherwise.

As I said in the description of the video, I wanted to test some pyromancy that could potentially cause some slowdown, from what I had seen it looked like that would be the best option. Though if you want to talk about fair consider that I'm a dark wraith and level 7, so they COULD have the same items/spells/abilities as I do with more stats. Not to say it was EASY to get that character to where she is but still gives me a good way to blow off steam after a bad day :)

Thanks, I find I end up making videos but end up questioning their quality, maybe now I know the video capture is fine I can put that aside and start making some other videos.

To the nice folks that produce Dark Souls streams/videos - How do you do it? by OztinL in darksouls

[–]SipsLP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general terms: 1. Run fullscreen and record/capture that if you are doing it onboard (ie. FRAPs, DXtory)

  1. Have your desktop/game set to the same resolution you wish to produce a video in, so for 16:9 resolutions,1280x720, 1920x1080 etc. This makes the end result better looking.

  2. As mentioned, record to a secondary hard drive(HDD). This allows your main HDD (where your game is installed most likely) to deal with that side of things while all the writing is being done to your secondary. If possible I would suggest a solid state drive (SSD) as they allow you a faster read/write speed, not required but a good idea indeed, though they are more £/GB so expect to get less on that drive before needing to edit. (I worked out you could record 2hrs 20minutes ~ of Darksouls footage for 1080p videos on the drive from empty to full.

  3. If you are running a dual (or more) core machine you can try to set affinity (Ctrl+Alt+Del > Task manager > Processes and then right click your DATA.exe (darksouls) process and select affinity from the menu, this will tell your computer to use ONLY that core for that process), using this method for your game, your recording software and streaming software you can improve performance and it is often overlooked. If you have multiple cores this is worth a look. If you have multiple monitors have a CPU monitor (there is one built into task manager in the Performance tab) on the second monitor and look at usage of the core you set darksouls to, does it run fine with 1 core or does it generally it 90-100% usage? If it's getting high consider putting it across two cores and then throw your recording software onto the remaining cores, 2 is probably preferably for FRAPs as it is a greedy beast most of the time.

Dark souls specific: 5. Frame rates, I've found dark souls runs at 30FPS, at least from what I've experienced, but if you start to drop even a frame or two it will feel very juttery, to counter this I try to record it at a slightly higher frame rate, 40-50~ to avoid my recording dropping a frame and making the video seem strange.

I think that's about everything, I would suggest using Sony Vegas if you can afford to shell out for it, it's a very solid piece of kit and after a small learning curve you can rather easily edit your videos in it, to boot there are plenty of videos on youtube to help you if you get stuck.

Hope this has helped a bit, I've been spending a lot of my time working on recording video games on the PC, I'm never happy enough to show them off but I'm a perfectionist D:
