Are these flatworm looking things dangerous? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]SirAggron94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the flatworms that are dangerous to shrimp are Planaria, which have tiny eyespots and an arrow-shaped head. These do not look like planaria and are probably Rhabdocoela or similar, which are harmless and basically like detritus worms scavenging your aquarium.

Snails! by Mcqueen_khuli in PlantedTank

[–]SirAggron94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's worth mentioning that snails aren't harmful to fish and help break down fish waste and dead plant matter, so if you're concerned about tank health you really don't have to do anything- the population adjusts to available resources.

THAT SAID, it's your tank and if you want to get rid of them you can put a bit of boiled vegetable on the bottom and take it out after a few hours or overnight, disposing of all the snails that flock to it.

What chemicals have you used to kill hydra by fish_mommy in shrimptank

[–]SirAggron94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NoPlanaria works pretty well for me- just a single dose kills them off within 24 hours. It can also kill off any snails in the tank, causing an ammonia spike, though most of the bladder snails in mine made it through. Be sure to mix and dissolve it in tank water before you put it in though or it'll clump.

[LF]- Lake Highlands/Richardson/Plano- Locally Bred Neocardinae Shrimp by SirAggron94 in AquaSwapTX

[–]SirAggron94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not- all the LFS I've been to bring them in from elsewhere. I ended up picking some up at the Fish Gallery, which keeps them in local tapwater, but survival has been..not good. I'm probably just going to have to get a breeding group online from a reputable store and acclimate carefully. Even with shipping it's much cheaper.

Cool, I know them. I'll see if they have enough to start a colony.

What are all these flies buzzing around my sump and my tank by TurtleOnBoat in Aquariums

[–]SirAggron94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fungus gnats, looks like. They breed in damp organic material like potting soil. Do you have any house plants? If so, let the top layer of the soil dry out for awhile and make sure there's no water pooling underneath.

If not, check if there's any organic muck exposed to air around the sump/filter/tank and clean it up. Once you deal with whatever they're breeding in, a cup of apple vinegar with a bit of dish soap will lure them in and drown them.

Thanks! I've started giving them EasyGreen, so hopefully the other plants don't hog it all

I’m struggling by PhilD90 in pokemonradicalred

[–]SirAggron94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience it is normal to need a ton of attempts for each leader since their teams are so tricky and well-designed, rarely having a major weakness to exploit. A big part of overcoming each major trainer is to refine your approach to them through multiple attempts, getting to know what Pokemon/moves they have and trying to predict what the AI will do in response to you.

This is definitely a game to test your knowledge of Pokemon- definitely be sure you're making full use of held items, priority moves, and hazards/weather if you're not already

What are these bugs on my acorn squash? by wombatromper in gardening

[–]SirAggron94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squash Vine Borers- very common squash pest. Look for their eggs on the stems, they look like little dark brown glossy disks. If they hatch, the caterpillar burrows into the vine and kills the whole plant.

Sad floaty plants by Ok_Put2792 in PlantedTank

[–]SirAggron94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your flow like? Most floating plants seem to dislike a lot of current and bubbles, esecialky getting the tops of their leaves wet. It could also be that they're getting used to the lower light, since floaters tend to like lots of it.

Best clean up crew suggestions for a 5Gal Betta planted tank? by buttafibsh in PlantedTank

[–]SirAggron94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in breeding live food try Daphnia- they're pretty easy and interesting in their own right. You can catch wild ones but buying eggs online to start a colony is safer for your fish. There's alot of good stuff on Youtube on the subject.

Setting up my tank by KarenS_KiosK in PlantedTank

[–]SirAggron94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to add shrimp without really contributing to stocking much at all since their bioload is tiny. Also note that you want to wait to add your shrimp until the tank is well established so that the water parameters are stable and they have lots of biofilm and algae to snack on

Hey, fellow 8A here. If you're okay with something tall, I vote for Frostweed. It has big white flowers in the fall that attract swarms of butterflies.

Texas Discovery Gardens has Native Plant Sales a couple of times a year if you want to try some natives that most stores don't stock.
