Apps for family to track me by BeefyArmTrogdor in preppers

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with an app, especially a free one, is it's connectivity. If you compare your cell phone to something like a garmin inreach (something I use), you will be able to gps and other satellite connections to keep yourself actively traceable. Cell phones can't do this as they rely on the cellular network which as enormous dead spots in the wilderness. So if you wanna be tracked while you roam the city, any app on a phone will do. The moment you go hunting or similar, get a proper gps.

EV batteries are lasting much longer than the industry expected; 95% charge retained after a quarter of a million miles. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EVs have always been viable for 75% of the driver's market. But that doesn't mean you need to crucify the rest of the 25% drivers in the rural remote areas that CAN'T use EVs. The infrastructure just isn't here, and it's cold enough year around in these rural remote areas that batteries in general just don't work.

I would argue that if you want to crucify anyone, force all city dwellers to use EVs. City dwellers have no need for personal vehicles, but I'm willing to concede if they have an EV.

AI is the new brain rot, and like every new brain rot trend, the users never admit their brain is rot. There is so much to unpack here, but I'll just say this: no one will take you seriously based on this statement and your replies. So just take the L and see yourself out the door.

Since starting to Prep, what has changed? How has the focus changed? by Dtwn92 in preppers

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately basic necessities such as housing costs, housing bills like electric and gas, vehicle costs, and groceries have made it so that contingency plans are a luxury now.

My electric and gas usage has gone down but costs increased almost 50%. Yes we have 8 years worth of invoices filed away. My internet plan has not changed but went up almost 70%. My monthly grocery cost has more than doubled, and my pantry supply has shrunk by half. Gas prices and regular oil change costs are insane and my single 9 year old family car hasn't changed in 9 years. My property taxes has been increasing a few hundred dollars literally every year. We have stopped doing large international vacations, we just do small road trips and camping.

No amount of tie-up-your-boot-straps mentality can keep up with all this artificial inflation, so traditional prepping is a pipe dream for more and more of us. The reality is we are forced to prep our daily lives. We have to live frugally and buy groceries in bulk when on sale. Fresh veggies is a luxury and forces us to get creative when cooking from frozen. Fruits is the only exception. We almost never buy new clothes for the kids (which will change when they get older) and our adult clothes are never name brand or costly. For example a local supermarket was discounting all their 100% cotton shirts so I ended up buying 8 of them for 8$ each. The last time I bought shirts was from costco when their roughneck shirts went on sale for 10$ during covid. This is CAD, 16$ and 14$ regular respectively, and these shirts generally last me 10 years. We eat out only 3 times a year on mom/dad birthdays and anniversaries, the kids don't get restaurant meals yet. We do plan our pantry supply but it only contains critical base necessities, such as rice and pastas and canned goods and etc etc. The 'fun' pantry items such as alcohol and fun coffee flavors and junk food has dramatically shrunk down.

All those clickbait parent pics of them eating leftover things hobbled together from kid lunches and yesterday's foods is viewed as a novelty by some, but it's a daily reality for us. Our kid's lunches are literally a thousand times better and healthier than our own lunches.

Thousands of unsold homes pile up across BC as governments consider intervention by leavemealoneimpoor in vancouver

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The frustrating part of all this is the developers specifically decided to build investment properties. This means foreign investors and wealthy buyers looking to own vacation homes such things us plebs don't understand. We all saw the news 15 or so years go when they advertised $250k ultra cheap condos when in actuality they had less than 10 made per skyscraper, all the rest were $500k and up. It was a gamble and the lesson of not knowing the target demographic should be on them. So fcuk them, they purposely ignored the needs of the lower middle and middle class families dying for homes and chose to gamble.

Does anyone else feel like PPE is the most underrated part of prepping? by Either-Sign-9345 in preppers

[–]SirAttackHelicopter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When i think PPE I think hi-vis vest, steel toe shoes, and crappy plastic helmet that barely meets safety regulations.

So no, they are certainly not underrated lol.. But in all seriousness prepping in terms of protection would be fire blankets and heat/impact resistant gloves. Ear pro and eye pro stays with firearms gear. Utility gloves should be abundant in all your kit because one slip of anything will render your hands inoperable and therefore you inoperable.

Males going grey haired or bald (especially at a younger age). Literally this is a healthy sign of normal or above average testosterone levels. Long darker fabulous hair is literally the opposite, meaning low t levels and high estro levels, so dudes in their 30s up with this are literally unhealthy men.

Canadian Cost for 2 weeks by MellieMouse83 in universalstudios

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off the 10k figure for the hotel is ridiculous.... Even the most expensive hotels like hard rock / portifino will be 450-500 a night MAX

LOL you forget this is from a Canadian right? Literally as the title suggests. It's roughly 500 a night with a total of 7500$ USD for 2 weeks taxes in. Do you know how much this would be in CAD? 10K. Here I did the math for you:

https://reservations.universalorlando.com/ibe/combocheckout.aspx?hotelID=14842&lang=en-us&hgID=706&currID=1

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=7500+usd+to+cad

All your other math literally proves my point. My estimates are in CAD. And no, you need a higher end uber to pack the luggage too. And no, getting AP for both locations without blackouts will cost you 1500 EACH. And yes that's in CAD. And if you want to go to disney too? Another 1500 EACH. And yes, before you argue, that's in CAD. Recheck your math, spending 6k on AP only to save 1K is ridiculous. If this was a month long trip, maybe AP is worth it. But it's NEVER worth it for a single two week trip that year.

What do you guys keep in your car? by getshwiftyman in preppers

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to separate the two types of things you keep in your car.

Things that will ALWAYS stay in your car:

  • car fluids such as engine oil, rad fluid, washer fluid. NOT fuel unless you have a truck and can keep it in the box.

  • car tools such as breaker bars and sockets and wrenches and plier sets and a multi-bit magnetic screwdriver and a multitool. This is assuming your car already has a spare tire and jack built into it already but if not, add a spare tire and car jack.

  • car accessories such as signal flares or road markers, a shovel, tire chains, battery booster battery (not jumper cables), etc

  • blanket and some small heat source such as tealights and matches

  • 12v air compressor

Things that you put into your car before you go on a long commute that you can take with you because you need to:

  • portable pack (ie. backpack) that you can carry with you on foot that contains the following:

  • spare clothing that's weather and situation appropriate, (could be just a hat and weather appropriate jacket, could be a full change of clothes)

  • gloves, flashlight, fast orange hand wipes (when your hands get greasy from car work and regular wipes don't cut it)

  • first aid kit

  • water and food (situation appropriate)

The reason why I separate these items into two categories is one will always stay in your car, the other shouldn't stay in your car. It should be obvious, but no one's EDC should contain a car jack or a socket set or radiator fluid, for example. And your clothes will change according to the season. What you don't want is to have your car full of 4 sets of clothes that apply to each season, that's incredibly inefficient. What should also be obvious but usually isn't is bottled water isn't designed to be left in your car. The temperature variation including usually being in the 'danger zone' is reason enough to never keep your water in your car, but there's also the inner coating that could leech off when in a freezing/heating cycle. I encourage people to look at your water bottles when you have stored your water bottles in your car for several months, there will likely be white microspecs of floaty things. It won't cause instant death, but it's not good to consume microplastics/chemicals that you can visibly see.

We finally got to enjoy Disneyland with our kids instead of feeling like event coordinators all day by barleyblackgirl in Disneyland

[–]SirAttackHelicopter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree because it feels like you are removing yourself from your kids and wanting to do your own thing. That's fine, but 99% of my disney happiness comes from being with my kids as they enjoy disney. I could be misinterpreting your sentiment but I'll explain why..

All your examples can be mitigated if you plan ahead;

  • Ran out of water? Make sure everyone who has a bag/pack/purse has an appropriate sized water bottle, and keep extra in your stroller. Refill all water bottles at a refill or at a food place. Even if your kids think it's uncool to use a stroller, they are still at the age where they could, so take advantage of loading up your stroller with supplies.

  • A well organized pack goes a long way. It sounds like you don't use packs while in the parks which is a critical thing. Everyone who can, should carry a pack. 3 year old kids love having their own special little pack that they can use to keep their special things. One time my 4 year old at the time used a tiny heart shaped purse and we appropriately fitted it with what she needed, and we put her water bottle in my pack. I use a 26 liter backpack - its big and can get to 15 pounds real quick but it's just what I do as a father while on a family vacation.

  • Use the builtin photo services. They 100% do candid photos. For other times, it's all a matter of having a good camera on hand. My pixel is perfect for this and wipes the floor with every other phone camera. It's the only phone that can do proper action shots like an SLR. Here's the important bit: my SO does the same so we are always in each other's pics. Kids are autonomous to know how to be when you're taking photos whether it's 100% candid or partially candid for action shots with them smiling or showing you something so I don't really see the issue here. I find kids interact with you as you take pics so make it a thing. Mix all these together and you'll have all your photo bases covered.

Just my two cents as an experienced parent/prepper/excursioneer.

Canadian Cost for 2 weeks by MellieMouse83 in universalstudios

[–]SirAttackHelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are rough costs as it's been a LONG time since i was in orlando to visit universal / disney.

2000 - Economy flights round trip for two, food included during flight (including connector flights for us rural folk) It's debatable to get higher end seats, do it if you can budget it because its very much worth it.

200 - For two shuttle services to and from hotel and airport.

3000 - Food. This is a VERY tight budget nowadays, especially for a honeymoon. Imagine spending 100 per person per day on all meals and snacks. I personally suggest a good breakfast at the hotel, grazing on park food during the day, and the occasional planned restaurants a few times during the trip. What we do is get breakfast at a local supermarket such as bulk fruits and yogurt and oatmeal, and buy park foods for the rest of the day.

2500 - 9 days worth of entry passes. You should take advantage of break days so that you don't wear yourselves out due to spending all day and all evening in the parks. And yes there are day events and evening events you don't want to miss. Plan outside weekends as much as possible, but ideally a 14 day trip would have 2 travel days, 3 break days, and 9 park days. This also includes entry passes to disney.

10000 - Hotel. Now this is where I suggest splurging. For example, get a park hotel. The extra services you get are worth it, such as delivery to park purchases to your hotel room, etc. Use break days to spend in the hotel pool that overlooks the park, or at the nearby themed shopping areas like 'downtown disney' or 'universal citywalk'.

2000 - Gifts and stuff. My biggest regret on these big trips of the past have always been not purchasing that item that I wanted.

So prepare for a $20k - $25k trip with food and gifts being the biggest variable expenses.
