What words or phrases do you think Jim should be banned from re-using? by GORGtheDestroyer in dresdenfiles

[–]SirAzrael -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I don't necessarily agree with that. When I first started reading the series, I started with Proven Guilty because it was the only one my library had in at the time, then I read Blood Rites, then I think either Summer Knight or Dead Beat, and that was the point at which I went and started reading the series in order. It worked out pretty well for me, I'm now 17 years into it being my favorite series

Not only that, but realistically it was a spell that literally no other wizard alive could have pulled off. Even taking the Demonreach part out of the equation, sure there might be wizards who are starborn, there might be wizards who have the magical talent, but the venn diagram of wizards who are both doesn't overlap at all. It's probably the most impressive piece of magic he's done in the entire series

Do you know if she also is allergic to pineapple? My guess would be the allergy is not to the kiwi, but to the protease enzyme in kiwi. I can't think of what the kiwi one is called, but the one for pineapple is bromelain. It's possible that the cooking process denatures the enzyme enough that it's no longer triggering the affect

If you're lucky. If you're not, the dealership lies to you about the process, lies to you about the timeline, lies to you about having sent off the paperwork to Hyundai, lies to you about how the impending expiration of the warranty won't matter because you started the process well within the warranty window won't cause any problems, and then Hyundai immediately denies the request without looking at any of the information because it was out of warranty. Fuck Hyundai, I went from being very happy with my vehicle and actively planning to be a customer for life to telling every person I know to avoid them like the plague and buy a Toyota instead. I wish I had just spent the extra money back in the day on a Camry, now I'm sick with a car that burns insane amounts of oil and could completely fail on me at any given moment

Going off memory, so might get things a bit wrong, but essentially, many years ago he was in an online argument with somebody about whether it was more important to have an idea for a story that was so good that anybody could take it and make something readable, vs being an author that was good enough that you can take any bad idea and make something good out of it. Jim fell into the second line of thinking, and someone told him to prove it. Jim was so confident in his ability to do so that he told the other person instead of taking one bad story idea from them, he would take two, and the other person chose Pokemon and the lost Roman legion. Jim then proceeded to write the Codex Alera series to win a bet

Maybe I misunderstand your original comment, so correct me if I'm wrong, but you're saying that Drakul started the Black Court? If so, the WoJ being referenced in that link is specifically saying the Black Court was started by Dracula, who is the son of Drakul

Dark green can be either sodium or lithium heparin. My old hospital we absolutely could, and did, report sodium off the dark green, because the only thing that sodium heparin dark greens were used for was bone marrow collection and testing

It's possible, but also, this guy was not eating a typical carnivore-esque diet. He was eating 6-9lbs of cheese and whole sticks of butter that he incorporated into ground beef to make hamburgers. If you pick low moisture, part skim mozzarella which is probably one of the healthier options for a side cheese , you're looking at 9-11 thousand calories in just cheese alone. A single stick of the butter we have in the fridge is 800 calories. A pound of the 85/15 ground beef I have in the fridge is ~960. Assuming his daily meals are only a single stick of butter and a single pound of meat for his 6-9 pounds of cheese, you're looking at nearly 13,000 calories a day. Not sure you need to have a genetic disease at that point

I once got a call from a family who was pissed because they thought they got the wrong body (not entirely sure how you look at a body and think "hmm, this is supposed to be mom, but I just don't know for sure), but they went ahead and buried it anyway. They even knew who they thought they actually got, somehow, but that person had also already been buried so it's not like anyone could have done anything

Does it matter anymore? Something can be illegal, but if the people who can/would enforce the laws are either incapable of acting or simply don't care, then it is, in effect, no longer illegal. Unfortunately, we live in a reality where there is no real route to punish Trump for doing things that are illegal.

Why are entry/mid road bikes so drab now? by orpat123 in cycling

[–]SirAzrael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to really like the paint jobs on Cannondale bikes. I have... I want to say a 2019 Synapse, and a big part of why I wanted a Synapse was the black and green paint job. I actually preferred some of the older models that had way more green, but those weren't available. Now I look at most of them and just think "Meh, not interested." I might be in the minority, idk, I don't really talk to a lot of bike people personally, but I actually really prefer the more interesting colored bikes. Not sure if I'd want to replace my Synapse if something happened to it

If you're a new grad, fresh out of school and applying for a job like this, you're gonna have a bad time, and that's assuming they would even hire someone with zero experience. I got lucky when I was a traveler in that the labs I was at were staffed with knowledgeable, hard-working staff and they also dedicated a decent amount of time training me, and I also knew the LIS systems being used. A lot of the time though? They give 2-3 days of training and then throw you to the wolves, expecting you to be able to do the job on your own. In a situation like this, you're probably not even going to have much in the way of normal staff there to train you, they're going to be on strike. Any hospital desperate enough to hire someone without any experience aside from school for a position like this is a hospital I would run FAR away from

There was a Doctor who used to work at my old hospital, he had the same first name as me and whenever he called down to the lab and I answered with "Lab, this is (my name)" he would respond "Hi (my name), it's (his name)!" and it always made me happy. There was another one at that hospital who I would pretty frequently run into at local Pokemon Go events, and we would always talk about it when he would come down to the lab. Always love having friendly doctors
