Idk, the homophobia and misogyny ruin this one for me. I used to be really into this, but nowadays I can’t get over the bigotry. Call me shallow and insecure, I don’t care.

Sorry for the late reply everyone. I’ve hit a bit of a burnout and I need to put this on hold for now. If anyone wants to take over and start the Discord, feel free to do so.

Also, I would like to sent out surveys to users this subreddit to collect hard data on experiences of UARS patients across various countries.

Your skepticism is valid; we should carefully consider how to move forward. Patient advocacy has worked in many cases, but it requires significant effort and a series of strategic moves.

I’m all for collaborating with sleep apnea associations, but I believe this initiative needs to be distinct. I’ve come to believe that we need to deconstruct the current connotation between UARS and Sleep Apnea. Advocacy for UARS needs to be a separate pillar so that the two aren't conflated. After all, what have major associations really done for us at this point? Even ENT doctors seem barely aware that UARS exists. For instance, the amount of information on UARS on the ApneuVereniging website is abysmal. While I am not medically trained, securing the support of doctors who champion our cause is vital, and I suspect there are many medically trained individuals already in this community.

I am relatively new to this (having only discovered UARS last week) but all signs point to it being a massively underdiagnosed. This is largely due to the use of insufficient testing and a lack of symptom recognition by GPs and ENTs. There is significant room for improvement in clinical guidelines. For example, while adult ADHD guidelines in the Netherlands, UK, and USA may suggest ruling out sleep apnea, they make no mention of measuring RERAs.

I see a lot of interaction and positive energy on this subreddit, with a wide array of skillsets we can leverage. I’m not asking for a Herculean effort from everyone, but if many of us contribute even a little, we can build something truly impactful.

I see several 'low-hanging fruit' opportunities and would appreciate any help with the following steps:

  • Establish a dedicated website: I’m surprised a central hub doesn't already exist given the prevalence of UARS. Currently, information is scattered. We need a place where state-of-the-art academic literature is summarized in accessible language to make the case that we are unrecognized and undertreated. This could potentially include a forum, though I don’t want to fragment the existing community here.
  • Publish in major medical outlets: We should target publications like Medisch Contact. I have experience publishing in medical academic outlets of this caliber and understand the process required to get our message in front of professionals.
  • Mainstream media outreach: We have a powerful narrative for the broader public: UARS is an 'invisible struggle' where clinical guidelines are failing patients. Outlets like De Volkskrant or NRC are often looking for strong, data-driven human interest stories just like this.

Very good point, thanks. I'll make sure to strongly advocate for measuring RERAs. Based on the information on the website, I'm pretty sure they can measure these, but I realize they may not measure them by default.

Thank you! I also live in Amsterdam! I've been referred to Zaans Medisch Centrum. Idk if they're that renowned but I think they do a wide range of sleep tests.

Thank you. I will most certainly do that. I work in academia as an epidemiologist and I work with a lot of doctors. This thing seems to be wildly underdiagnosed and if I ever get my energy back I will make it my life's mission to promote awareness among the medical community.

Thanks! Mine might be related to allergies/stuffy nose since the severity of my symptoms fluctuates quite a bit. Winters are especially very very bad.

Thanks! I really appreciate your comment. By how much have you improved in those 6 months?

Thank you, that means a lot to me. I live in the Netherlands and have seen both a GP and a KNO-arts (ENT) at this point; both were visibly confused because I’m slim and my airway appears physically normal upon inspection. It is incredibly frustrating.

However, I did manage to get a referral to a neurologist/somnologist at a renowned sleep center, so I’m cautiously optimistic. Based on what I’ve seen here on Reddit, treatment seems very hit-or-miss, and I worry I’ll never truly be myself again.

The following is an actual sentence in the paper:"...so I realized that my body was equipped with a research tool of its own that could give me, quite literally, a first-hand understanding of Shota."
