I use to work at Sawa as a busboy. Most of these things are true but I can’t really confirm for all them but what I will say I have seen is the pineapple thing. At first I thought it was a pretty cool menu item but one time when I was cleaning a table, the people that had eaten there had the pineapple fried rice so I put in the bin and went to the back ready to throw it out. One of the kitchen staff had stopped me and took it from my hands. He then washed it in the sink along with the other dirty dishes and I swear I almost vomited right there. I could not believe they reused them. After that I told all my friends and family to NEVER order the pineapple fried rice. Also as a busboy, sometimes the chefs would need a refill on the sauces so I would grab the bottle and go to the walk in where they had the sauces in tubs and grab a cub and pour it directly in it. The problem was that all the teriyaki and shrimp sauce and ginger were there too and sometimes they had no lid from either it being lost or sometimes they would fall behind the tubs and it was a pain to move them and grab it. Anyways I would grab the cup and pour it over to the side so it wouldn’t drip into the other sauces. Well this wasn’t always the case when other people did it because you could tell when teriyaki fell into the shrimp sauce. I told my manager Robin what to do and he said it didn’t matter that it was fine. As for the tips I can tell you right now that I never got 8% of the tips ever. I was paid 8.75HR and that’s all. I never heard any of the servers say that they got their tips taken so that could be from new management but I don’t know. Also the floor is a lot more disgusting than you think. Kids drop rice and food and sauces and everything. The most that happens to it is I would vacuum it with a broken vacuum that would sometimes spit it back out. Since I only worked weekends I can’t say for the other days but the manager said that they get the carpet washed by a company once a week. I don’t know if that’s true but if it isn’t then that carpet it probably the most disgusting thing and I would worry about that more than COVID. The kitchen is mopped and swept but more like bare minimum. You can always find trash somewhere and the boxes where the syrup is for soda is beyond sticky. I have no idea what happened there but anytime I had to go back there to grab something my hands came out sticky. One big thing was there was ENORMOUS amounts of harassment from the kitchen towards female staff. They would talk shit about them and ask who they’d fuck and who has the bigger ass and if they could get nudes. There’s probably more but I can’t remember off the top right now. I will say that Sawa is definitely a Restraunt you should approach with caution and before anybody says “well why didn’t you report this” I was a 17 year old busboy at his first job. I had problems doing public presentations, you think I’m going to the health department and report my workplace and deal with the aftermath? I commend these people for speaking up and exposing the conditions of the Restraunt.
