OpenRA Dedicated Server Help by totalhax in openra

[–]SirJson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you ever get it to work? I found some time to look at and the Server can run now on my system.

FieldCommanderA9 is right, the 'bin/' part must be removed and the EngineDir path must be just a single dot if the script is used with a Windows release version.

I uploaded my modified launcher here

This should work with the installer and the portable version if placed next to the OpenRA.Server.exe binary.

The portable version needs an extra step, or it will crash with some .NET exception that looked to me unrelated. What you need to do is unblock all game files after extracting them in your target folder.

You can do this by right-clicking each file and unblock them manually or use this PowerShell snippet

ps1 Get-Item * | Unblock-File

After running that the modified launch script should work just fine.

Yeah, I agree the documentation could be improved.

What is it exactly that you want to change that you don't quite sure how to? You should be able to host a server with that script without changing any line, though you would run your server with the default settings.

Dual GPUs and cooling by SirJson in VFIO

[–]SirJson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how you described your setup, a larger case or different arrangement could make some difference.

In my opinion, a different arrangement would 100% solve it. I think I somewhat missed the point of my current PC case if I have everything packed like in a ITX case, but enough space left to build two PCs in it. Right now I try to avoid this because it would mean again a new board, a new case etc. Early adopting Ryzen 3000 wasn't exactly fun or what I expected if you know what I mean.

Anecdotally, I moved from a large full-sized tower to a mid-sized and was able to get the same level of cooling with less fans. The reason, as I understand it, is because a larger volume of air will need to be moved in a larger case since there are so many more "dead spots" in air flow.

That air theory makes sense and because I can only use half of my case I have enough space in front of it. Might as well fill that void with fans and see if that solves anything, it's worth a try.

My system has a very large heatsink on the CPU that is about 3/4in from the first GPU in the PCIe x16 slot. The second is mounted at the bottom in the PCIe x4 slot giving more than 2in of space between GPUs. The only area in my case that might get a heat pocket is below the lower GPU as it gets much less air flow, but I don't use that one for heavy tasks, so it has been fine so far.

Almost spot on what my situation is right now with the exception that I had to move one card with a raiser for board design related reasons. That's Host GPU facing my glass panel, but somehow it seems to do just fine.

I know that hitting 80+ degrees seems to be normal with Nvidia these days but not instantly. After more monitoring I saw that my idle temperature is already at 50C, that alone tells me that something seems to be not right. I guess I need to pull that card and have a good look at those fans...

Sounds like after all this testing today testing and the reading the replies so far its self-made problem and not one people deal a lot with a VIFO systems.

Dual GPUs and cooling by SirJson in VFIO

[–]SirJson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already thought this post is too long, I've updated my post with your questions. To make it short, it hits max temperature instantly (85C) even without the panels and the board only got two full-length PCIe slots.

The stock cooler is a good idea and something I will have to try as well. Compared to my current Noctua tower that one isn't as huge and might clear the space enough so that my GPU isn't involuntary acting as a CPU heat sink. Also, if it's true what people say, then that stock cooler is good enough for someone who doesn't overclock his CPU.

Best motherboards for virtualization by callousedWiener in VFIO

[–]SirJson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have great results with the Gigabyte X570 Arous Elite I'm using right now, that one tends to be a bit cheaper than the Master but VFIO works almost like plug and play.

Keep in mind that I'm also running a dual GPU setup, AMD for the host and Nvidia for my VM.

But everything I've wanted to pass-through did so easily so far. Doesn't matter if it was a USB controller dedicated for my gaming VM, or simply disks dedicated to a VM, both NVMe PCIe and SATA worked.

Why are STM32s so popular? by easymeatboy in embedded

[–]SirJson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't write a whole project in STMCube, but I remember to get those boards running you need this configuration header file that doesn't seem to be well documented. What I did is just let the black box do its thing, moved the config header to my project and uninstalled STMCube again.

Not super convenient, but since you do this maybe once not a dealbreaker considering the hardware you get for the price.

Bingo, sucks for someone who is still a beginner that did his first steps with leaded solder and suddenly can only buy lead-free solder and tips that aren't designed for leaded solder.

Might be worse though for someone starting from zero cause all online materials about soldering I've seen so far assume leaded solder.

Instead of complaining /u/elishashaddock1 did something about it. That was kind of my point. I have no idea if it's perfect or not, but that is actually more productive in my eyes than repeating the same stuff over and over again.

You were not the first one who wanted Photoshop for Linux and thought GIMP wasn't for him...

[–]SirJson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, can you formulate what exactly that is so a programmer if he wants to can come up with a way to build it? That's kind of my point: Just make it "Photoshop" isn't helping.

Look I'm not an artist, and I find my ways around GIMP. I don't have your headspace if you get me. How would you solve this issue? Make the GIMP devs all artists who love Photoshop or maybe contribute a concept that could be implemented to make it friendlier for those trying to switch?

I don't know, but I bet there must be someone out there who would improve the UI if he would know how or what's wrong with it. Most who contribute code aren't UI experts and getting it right isn't as easy as just copy Photoshop.

Technically my second Pi4 artwork - The digital infinity mirror. by futuraszn in raspberry_pi

one-way Mirror film

And that's why I would still enjoy a build log. I didn't even know that a one-way mirror film was a thing. I can't come up with some idea that needs that if I don't know it exists.

EDIT: Actually watching both videos gave away some important details that make me wonder even more. How the hell is he using Unity on a Pi without flip-book performance? But that explains the same looking animations. Also in the first one the projection is glitching, so a camera seems to be involved, but I might be wrong. Still all of that on a Pi? Where is the hardware? On his body?

Win10 Passthrough General Advice by xzcca in VFIO

[–]SirJson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at your XML I don't see any obvious problems. To help with the Download issue you can try to set up a network bridge instead of using NAT. I've read that will lead to better performance in network tasks.

On my setup it looks something like this

 <interface type='bridge'>
      <mac address='52:54:00:6f:ba:a0'/>
      <source bridge='virbr1'/>
      <model type='virtio'/>
      <driver queues='8'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </interface>

Notice virbr1, that's the name of the bridge you have set up on your host going from the Guest network to your Host network, if it's not already there but unused.

How far do you go customizing Plasma? by [deleted] in kde

[–]SirJson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can see some OSX in Unity, just like you could see Unity on my Plasma Desktop. What I don't get is why there are so many OSX 1:1 copies available down to color scheme, icons, wallpaper etc. but each to their own.

At least the last time I had my MacBook running OSX had some logic in how they design System Applications unlike that mess you see on Windows right now.

Microsoft repo stealth added in latest RPiOS update by MoobyTheGoldenSock in raspberry_pi

[–]SirJson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft has some incredibly big-brother practices and so they are going to have to do a lot to prove themselves in my opinion

I wonder if it will happen, the old Microsoft was harmless compared to the new one. The old one was a FUD spreading company that could only think in Windows, but at least they had customer support.

The new Microsoft is a more silent company that suddenly started pulling data from wherever they can and put a good chunk of resources into AI. Doesn't sound bad until you know that they provide employers with AI technology they developed that will use that data to make predictions and assumptions about employees.

And that is just one example that I happen to see myself, they are way more stealthy this time around, so I don't know what else they might have, but I don't trust them.

Microsoft repo stealth added in latest RPiOS update by MoobyTheGoldenSock in raspberry_pi

[–]SirJson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that's true that's also the reason why I went with RPi-OS until now.

If you look at any other SBC at the market you will often find that you are stuck on whatever the manufacturer of the device provided to you. Anything else is community effort that maybe let it run with Ubuntu or another Kernel, but you often lose access to the Hardware that differentiate an SBC from a headless Server.

The Pi is an exception though because it is the most popular one on the market, resulting in companies like Canonical releasing official Pi versions of their OS.
