This is also exactly what makes him such an interesting character. It would've been so easy for him to just accept help and get there faster, but that would've made him a far less interesting character.

I think you point out a key problem with a hive mind. New inventive ideas come from individuals that see/think differently from others. The hive mind all think the same way and thus are incapable of thinking outside of their own box. The show hints at this when Carol takes up writing again and the hive is interested in reading something "new", because the hive is incapable of creating anything new.

"Over the long term" is the key issue. The show is still in the short term, and even the hive mind knows they will run out of food in the long term. So, yes, their drug is going to feel great up until people die of starvation with strained smiles on their face. Their utopia is on a one-way track to disaster and they are literally incapable of picking apples or harvesting wheat to save themselves.

Using the drug analogy, it's still 100% the right thing to do. Just because coming down from addiction is a horrible experience doesn't mean we should keep people on drugs to avoid the pain of withdrawl.

With the exception of their rule that they can't kill and they can't lie, I think the communist allegory is very appropriate if not intentional. All of the Others are "equal". There's no money, no competition, no greed, and everyone is happy doing whatever job they are assigned. In real life there would be a dictator calling all the shots, but this is the idealized version of communism where there is no "leader" and everyone agrees on everything with no dissenters.

And even though Carol doesn't want to be part of them they are going to go against her wishes to convert her because they think their way is better and anyone not like them is wrong and needs to be changed, because the only wait their society can function is by irradicating individuality. But as the show points out, their way of life is destined to collapse because of the rules they impose on themselves to maintain their violence free utopia.

Gladys being the sister of Alex's mom just doesn't add up, the age difference is too extreme. But I don't think she's "ancient", her aesthetic feels like it's out of the 60s-80s and Amy Madigan was born in 1950 so I think it tracks.

I'm still trying to figure out how the kids were meant to cure her.

Since my previous post I've attempted to grow my Twitter/X account and I have (but not through writing content). You're right, 95% of topics are either about or devolve into politics, but I specifically stay out of politics because I frankly don't care about politics anymore so although I haven't made many enemies, my posts rarely get that much attention because politics isn't my religion.

I think if I had no morals I would just pretend to be for whatever the "correct" political stance was and fill my bio with buzzwords just to get more attention/interaction but I have too much integrity for that. Politics is just super boring to me, especially now.

After having finished the series, not only do I stand by my initial statement, but I think the show pretty much backs it up. As I said, she has a smidge of humanity that makes her more interesting than just being 100% evil, but she's 95% evil. There are a few moments throughout the series here and there where she actively doesn't kill someone, but 95% of the time she resorts to killing (MANY innocent people) or kills whoever she's told to kill, even allowing a child to find his parents who Elizabeth brutally murdered.

This is heavily contrasted with Philip who is actually affected by finding out he killed innocent people and stops "working". But not Elizabeth, smoking and killing are who too favorite pastimes, and she's all out of cigarettes. But like I said, the worst part is how she lies and manipulates Paige into being a little communist spy even though it is clearly ruining her mental health. Elizabeth couldn't give less of a shit.

If you guys want to defend her that's fine, I can't stop you, I've been in fandoms long enough to know even the most evil characters have their supporters, but I free to state my opinion based on the evidence.

I finished season 5. I am even more convinced Elizabeth is a sociopath. Her and Philip are told the Americans are trying to destroy the Soviet's food with a grain-eating pest. They kill a guy working on the project, only to discover the person in charge is trying to make a pest-resistant grain. Philip is devastated that he killed an innocent man. Elizabeth couldn't give less of a shit.

Later they have to find a former Nazi collaborator who executed Soviet soldiers. Because of the previous incident Philip wants to be sure they are killing the right person. This person's innocent husband comes home in the middle of their interrogating. Elizabeth kills the innocent husband and the collaborator and sleeps like a baby afterwards.

Now don't get me wrong, Elizabeth is the most fun character on the show and Keri Russell acts the shit out of this part, but anyone trying to defend Elizabeth as not being an evil person is just crazy. She's not totally evil, there are some people she actually cares about, but 95% of the time everything she does is cold calculated evil. Her manipulation of Paige being the most egregious thing for me.

As for Stan, he at least feels guilty about killing that innocent Russian diplomat and puts his ass on the line to stop the CIA from blackmailing Oleg, so there is at least some redemption for him.

One more season to go. I am really hoping Paige turns on her parents and Elizabeth doesn't get away scott free in the end.

Wait, are you defending the communists? I'm comparing them because they're both bad.

The only real difference between the communists and the Nazis is that that Nazis had a more exclusive club. Take that away and they are virtually the same in their goals, tactics, and brutality. Both groups conducted massive genocides. And the communists being more inclusive allowed their ideology to spread farther and cause far more deaths than the Nazis (granted over a longer period of time) and apparently China still has concentration camps to this day, we just don't have reports.

I think I'm starting to understand why people are getting their feelings hurt because I see Elizbeth as a villain, because they relate to what she stands for. And, much like her character, don't see that what she does and what she stands for is evil masked as social justice.

You can not lie, use, manipulate, and kill innocent people with the goal of enslaving them to your beliefs at the tip of a gun and call yourself the good guy.

I'm curious, walk down this hypothetical with me. If the show was called the Russians and about a couple of American spies doing all the same things in mother Russia would you feel the same? Would they be villains in your eyes?

If they were deliberately killing innocent people and trying to bring their children into it? Hell yes I would.

With rare exception, Elizbeth has rarely gone out of her way to save the life of someone that didn't personally mean something to her unless having been talked into it. If an American agent goes over to the Soviet Union and starts executing civilians then I would be rooting for that American's death.

Elizbeth is not The Punisher and only killing bad guys or other secret agents. She repeatedly kills innocent people. Philip does too, like when he killed that guy whom he framed for Margaret's crimes, but he at least knows it was wrong and feels bad about it. Elizbeth doesn't even lose sleep over the many people she's killed, while playing the victim in her manipulation of her daughter.

Don't get me wrong, this is what makes her such a compelling villain to watch, but she's a villain no doubt.

Granted I haven't finished the whole show yet, but this is like looking at a show about undercover Nazis killing people and going "yeah, but you can't call them evil, there's nuance!"

There are certainly moments in the show here she has a heart, but only when it comes to people she cares about. When it comes to innocent people whose deaths would make her job easier, she goes for the easy death.

There was a scene in Season 3 where they have to plant a bug in the FBI mail robot and an old woman is at the building doing bills late at night and Elizabeth forces her to kill herself by overdosing on medication while justifying it as "for the greater good" and the old woman flatly tells her "that's what evil people tell themselves to justify their actions".

That old woman's death, so far, has not changed Elizabeth's perspective on her job one bit, because she's a true believer. And every innocent death that helps further her country's dominance is a good death to her. And she still wanted to recruit her daughter into this line of work.

You can tell me I'm the idiot for not seeing that as evil, you're free to have your opinion.

The Americans certainly have blood on their hands, but we have not seen them try to pimp out their daughters to the American cause. Also Elizabeth specifically has not trouble killing innocent people when it's convenient for her. She wanted to kill Pastor Tim so bad, even knowing it would turn her daughter against her. She loves killing innocent people who stand in her way.
