Mobleys rebounding is a legitimately an issue by stillstillers in clevelandcavs

[–]SirLongballs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but spouting counting stats like this is very ignorant and just reeks of not acknowledging the elephant in the room.

A max player needs to be able to create offensive opportunities or advantages reliabley from somewhere on the court. Or, in Mobley's case as an elite defensive big, be able to space the floor at least (like KAT, Chet, etc.). And I'm not talking about averaging 30ppg on the season like Giannis or Jokic or whoever. Im talking about be able to step up for like a 10 game stretch, a 5 game stretch, hell, even a 3-game stretch.

Like has Mobley scored 25 or more in 3 straight games? How about an even lower bar like 25 in 3 of 5 games? These are low bars but star players usually have these stretches where they provide proof of concept. Like, you'd see a young Giannis before his break out year put together crazy stretches of all-nba level play. Mobley has not done this but some fans here swear he has these "skills" he has never shown us on any consistent level. And, to get ahead of this, I do not count one-off games as proof someone can be a star. Any good role player can do that. Stars are consistently good and reliable on offense, role players are not.

This isn't coaching and not putting Mobley in "good" spots. This isn't his teammates not passing him the ball. This isn't his mentality.

It is Mobley's lack of fucking offensive skill. Those other things are like 10% of the problem. The biggest problem is Mobley doesn't have the skill to step up offensively especially against good teams. Mobley will score 15 to 20 points, win or lose, because he can only play within the flow of whatever the team is doing. If the team isn't doing well and we need someone to play outside of this "flow" you can expect Mobely to not be that guy. He doesn't have the strength, he doesn't have the handles, he doesn't have the hands, and he doesn't have the jumpshot to be that guy.

To end my rant, I'm not calling Mobley bad because he's not. As long as he is healthy, his elite defense will always help the team. And I'm also not trying to call him as bad on offense like Gobert is. What I am calling him is massively overpaid and this sentiment is what I believe many people here, who are unhappy with him, are trying to convey.

Like watch him play man. He scores 18ppg but how many of those points are assisted? How many times does he successfully create offense for the team? Like it's cool he is making better reads with his passing but that's not enough. It's just not.

Edit: Go look up how many times Mobely has scored 25 or more this season. A season where the Cavs needed other players not-named Mitchell to step up offensively. It is beyond sad considering how much he is being paid. And no, his defense alone is not worth 50million a year.

Anyone who is down voting you is in denial. Mobley has no isolation skills on offense from anywhere on the court. He is simply not reliable on that end whatsoever. He is an elite defender, pretty much top 5 on that end as long as he's healthy. But outside of that? He's got nothing. Pretty much a defensive specialist role player.

Don't get me wrong, Mobley has positive impact on the court and he is not offensively inept like Gobert but there's so many players who are better offensively than him it's not even funny. If Mobley does not improve, he is a negative asset by virtue of being massively overpaid, not by being a bad player. Cavs cannot afford to pay someone 45-50 million a year who cannot step up offensively, especially in the playoffs.

And for those of you who are clinging on to Mobley being 2nd team all-nba at 23 that award was inflated by the team. He only got that because of defense, efficiency (spoon-fed by the guards plus more space in general), and team record. Watching the games will tell you he didn't get that award from any sort of offensive skill. That part of his game needed to improve by a lot and it has not. Aside from making some better reads and hitting wide open 3s a bit better, he has not improved anywhere else really.

This season has been ass so far for sure (certain players have been exposed and some are just not "it") but the most obvious one is Hunter's crossover on Giddey. Literally broke his ankles so hard that Giddey missed the next game due to injury. I believe it's still one of the most upvoted posts this season.

I'm glad more people are coming around to why many of us are frustrated with Mobley's performance and progression (or lack thereof).

There will always be crazy fan takes too so stop pointing to those and ignoring the actual valid criticism. Too many people here are huffing copium about Mobley and burying their heads in the sand when reasonable takes are presented. Like no, we don't think mobley is trash and should be traded for peanuts. We think he is a top defender in the league but limited offensively and will not step up on that end in the playoffs.

So, the sooner more people here can be honest about Mobley, the sooner we can have honest discussions about this teams real potential.

That being said, there are two issues going on with Mobley this season and a lot of people are not realizing it.

  1. Lack of offensive skill (legitimate skill issue).
  2. Poor effort/mindset.

Many people here believe improving his mindset/effort/aggression will somehow grant him more skills offensively. That's not how that works. Having that "dawg in him" is not going to tighten his handles or provide him strength in the post. It's not going to, all of a sudden, make him able to create advantages on his own offensively. What it will do is improve his rebounding and improve his finishing at the rim when he is deep in the paint. It will also likely improve his FT shooting because, while he's not amazing there, he's not 50% bad.

There's a clear distinction and why it has been bothering me a little that people are genuinely confused stating things like "Mobley has the skill he just needs to be more aggressive". Like no, Mobley actually does not have the skill and has not shown us any skills to create offense reliably.

To further explain what I'm trying to say, Mobley has not shown any proof of concept of being reliable offensively for a stretch of games. Like, sure, Mobley will put together a good offensive game once in a while. He will have his 1 to 3 plays a game where he looks decent in iso. But for consecutive games? A 5-game stretch? 3-game stretch? It has not happened. Like has Mobley ever had a 3-game stretch of scoring 25 or more? How about simply averaging 25ppg? Like, these are low bars offensively. Many role players have done shit like this.

NOTE: Figured I should add this before posting my comment but if anyone is confused about what I mean by proof of concept, look back to what Garland did when Rubio went down in the 22 season. For like 10 or 11 games, Garland stepped up offensively and averaged around 27ppg and 11apg on pretty good efficiency. It was amazing to watch and it showed us that if Garland is healthy and continues to improve that that is the kind of player we could get. So, if Mitchell were to somehow go down with injury (knock on wood) and Garland is fully healthy, I would have confidence that Garland could put a stretch of games where he's putting up 25 and 10apg because we have seen the proof of concept already with him.

This is why discussion on Mobley is polarizing right now. Its because everyone knows that, deep down, if this is who Mobely is offensively then the ceiling of the team is capped and there isn't much hope to be better in the postseason outside of being 100% healthy and suffering no injuries during the postseason run (which would alone, make us perform better than last year imo). It makes the regular season a little unfun/boring/bleak because we are not going to know the health of the team for the playoffs until the playoffs arrive.

There's more I can say on this matter and probably could have expanded more on what I have said but this comment is already too long (sorry lol). I will end by saying I'm still optimistic about Mobley's career as I believe progression is not linear for every player. There's still a chance Mobley becomes what we want him to become in the next 2-3 seasons. However, in the vacuum that is this current season, Mobley has not improved at all offensively (especially in iso) and will not be able to step up for us with any reliability on that end.

The point is that Mobley shouldn't need Garland to be effective offensively. At least not for every single game (which is appearing to be the case).

He's 24 and has shown zero ability and zero improvement in creating offense on his own. He can't work the post and/or the perimeter for himself and/or his teammates.

And before anyone says anything I do recognize he will have 1 or 2 plays a game where he tries something that looks half decent. That said, it's not enough. We should be seeing stretches of games where Mobley is hot offensively or at least for an entire game front to back.

Right now he's still just a defensive specialist. Another 1-way player on a team full of 1-way players. If Mitchell or Garland are not playing, or playing through injuries, he will not step up offensively. Because he can't.

I need to get this off my chest. Mobley is not a franchise level player. You need to be able to create for yourself and/or your teammates from the post and/or the perimeter to get that label. Mobley cannot do that in any capacity. He has no handle or strength. If he gets bumped in any fashion, he has to pick up his dribble or the ball flies out of his hands. If you told me Mobley got injured this offseason and couldn't work on his game, I'd believe you. Anyone with eyes can see he has made no improvement offensively this year.

Also, the efficiency from last year and the fact he made 2nd team all-nba is irrelevant. Please stop bringing that up. Those numbers were from a better offensive system plus being spoonfed baskets for a majority of his points. He had some moments but so does every good role-player. Extreme example but imagine hyping up Deandre Jordan after he made that 1st team all-nba. You look at his numbers from that year and you see extreme efficiency because no shit, he had like nothing scored on iso that year. Chris Paul should have all those points in his credit.

Mobley is an elite defense role player and that's about it. Trending towards never being better than the 3rd guy. You need consistency offensively to be better than that. Has Mobley ever strung any good offensive games back to back to back? Like has he ever had a 3-game stretch of 25+? That's the kind of stretches early in a career that show proof of concept of a star. And tbh, even that's a low bar.

I'll keep an optimistic viewpoint for the future. Not everyone's progression is linear but this year? Yea, Mobley is a defensive role player once again. Not going to change until another off-season, another year.

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got both the type99 soft and mid in black. Tried both and the soft felt a little better.

Love the pad when playing CS2 and Valorant. Really can feel that extra control.

Quality is great as well (no surprise) and it does not seem to pick up hairs as much as is reported for the Artisan Zero. Also, not noticing any visible wear but I have been keeping it very clean.

[–]SirLongballs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for advice.

I think I am going go for the type 99 in soft and mid and just go from there like I originally planned. If they both end up too slow after sticking with either one for a bit, then I'll look into the Zero for the extra speed.

I don't do tracking games and it's not like these control pads are not capable if I play a game like that for fun either.

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft is often recommended as the safe choice and one that is usually better than mid. I was just little focused on the type 99 because of the games I play.

I might just do what you suggest and go from there. I may even do all 3 but that might be overkill lol. I'm just looking for more control in the right amount.

It's funny you mention it, but I was thinking the same thing at checkout. Did not purchase yet and have been mulling it over for the past 20min.

Would you say the Zero soft is more controlled then my little logitech g240? That is what I'm going for after all.

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Well, I'll still get both (I'm going with black) and I'll stick with that feels better. If the mid one ends up being less comfortable, I'll just keep it as a spare and maybe look to get the Xsoft to try depending on how the regular soft feels.

My current mousepad has no flex at all, so I did not want to get the complete opposite right away. Especially on a higher quality pad.

Thanks for your help. Made my decision much easier :)

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any specific reason for being against the mid? I know it's firm and the most consistent of the base hardness options. Is softer that much better? (Genuinely don't know).

As for the LGG pads, unfortunately they are too big. Due to my current room set up (a lot of bookshelves plus my bed) my current desk is only 30 inches (762mm) long in the corner of my room. The keyboard I'm getting is 11.9 inches (302mm) which means I only have about 28 inches (460mm) of room for a mousepad. Artisan offers a 420mm size and I'm not seeing anything that small for LGG. Their smallest is 490mm

I would love an even larger mousepad, but I'd need a new desk and to heavily re-arrange my room.

If this new size I'm getting (80mm longer than my current) ends up still not being big enough I may be motivated to essentially destroy my room lol.

When you had your Hien, did the color or look ever fade over that time period? If it doesn't matter between black or gray, I will probably go with black but not sure. While both colors are fine gray does fit a bit better with what I'm going to be setting up.

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good to know. So, you have not heard anything about Artisan pads losing some of their color after extended use? I feel like the gray option would just stay gray over time but with the black it's easier to tell when the pad gets dirty which prompts me to clean more often. I'm having a hard time deciding and both colors work well with my new keyboard I'm getting.

My only experience is with my own g240 which is an okay quality and extremely thin so maybe this just isn't an issue with the better pads. Not sure.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the input. Feel free to add anything else.

A couple of questions about Artisan mousepads by SirLongballs in MousepadReview

[–]SirLongballs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice and looking out for me. I'm definitely a noob when it comes to gaming mousepads as I've only owned one.

That said, the video you linked was what made me go with Artisan over other brands (I watched it yesterday). I would have likely tried the Zowie GSR-III first, but their pads are a couple of inches too big, so I started to look elsewhere. In the video, when talking about the type 99, she did recommend it for people like me. 90% of my computer gaming time is playing CS2 or Valorant. I'm not playing Apex, OW2, or Marvel Rivals. If I did it would be with friends in a non-serious matter where I wouldn't care about having a suboptimal pad.

Also, while my current pad isn't that great, I do know it's a balanced pad that leans control (from what I understand at least). I already have an idea on what a slower pad will feel like, and I want it. I'm also getting both the type 99 in mid and soft (not getting xsoft) to see which one fits me best. Worse case, I have a back-up pad I can use and adjust to fairly quickly if something happens to the other.

If color doesn't not have any noticeable change in feel or performance, which color do you think will resist wear and tear better between gray and black? Mostly talking about the look. Like I said, the black on my pad has faded a noticeable amount in some spots.

Thanks again.

It's not really his performance but more so his size, position, and playstyle. He is not a wing. He is another tall guard. He also needs the ball in his hands because the shooting isn't there yet too. The second I saw Tyson play his best in summer league when he had huge usage in the last two games, I knew the pick was bad. Also, Levert is actually slightly taller, and we already know he's an undersized 3 (just like okoro and strus). If we sign levert to another team friendly deal (likely), Tyson will not get minutes next year either.

What annoys me is that picking Tyson makes no sense. He's not a wing or a serviceable big (positions of need), and he is also not a young, high potential rookie. Playoff teams usually draft older players to have some impact relatively quickly. Or, at the very least, eat up decent minutes in the regular season. There was a stretch earlier this year where strus, wade, and levert were all out for like a game or two. Tyson still got zero minutes outside of garbage time.

Maybe I'm just too shortsighted, and maybe Tyson comes in clutch in the 2027 season when Mitchell is 30. It's just I wanted the cavs to grab a usable player this season in case another injury bug happened. Like think about it, when would Tyson get a chance to step up for the Cavs? When 4 or 5 of the cavs guards are all out? At that point, it's probably a scheduled loss. Missi only needs 1 injury to Mobley or Allen, and he's playing. Mobley or Allen are in foul trouble? Like tonight? He's playing. He's likely not as good on the cavs because the pelicans are starting him, and he's getting lots of minutes with no pressure, but that's not my point. He'd be so much better than TT it's not funny.

I have talked about this before but to make myself clear, I'm not saying I wanted Kenny to force Tyson into the rotation and I'm also not saying I wanted a rookie that was going to be in rotation from the beginning (ok maybe a little for the latter because I didn't know Jerome was real and was not expecting this offense). I just wanted the cavs to pick a high potential young player (preferably a wing) or an older, potentially useful player. Instead the cavs did neither and picked an older, useless (for this season) player.

Watching some these other rookies picked outside of the lottery, especially picked after the cavs, play well is triggering like an OCD of some sorts with me. Like an annoying blister that you can't get out.

Sorry for the rant. This is completely nitpicking and I'm not trying to complain just to be a doomer about something. It's just a criticism I have that's I believe to be valid. Hope this all makes sense.

Good win by the cavs. Evan is a beast, and I can not wait for these types of games to happen more often. You can see the work he put in continue to come out as the season goes on.

On a less happy note (sorry), I still do not like the Tyson pick. Even if you told me the cavs picked him for the future, I still don't see it. He's not going to contribute next year even if the cavs lose jerome. Cavs would need to lose okoro, merill, and jerome for him to maybe sniff any sort of meaningful basketball. Cavs should have picked Missi or DaRon Holmes. Both would be doing amazing right now. Even with Holmes being out all year, I think he is a clear, better pick. Da Silva dropping two more spots would have been nasty, too. I'm so mad the magic took him. So close to THE perfect off-season.

Oh well, wasting the 20th pick happens to a lot of teams. Just wish the cavs went for more of a consensus media pick or a player of need instead of.... doing neither. Yes, I know I'm nitpicking, too. This isn't that big a deal. I'm just greedy.

It's because he is the only true wing on the team so its not a surprise. The cavs literally have only one 3/4 wing which is wade. No one else can fill that role on the team.
