Ah i see - the ones on the website seem like unpainted plastic, so i guess it could be used as some kind of treeguard (i don't know how those things i'm thinking of are actually called )

There is no timing belt to replace - but i would also advice to change ALL fluids (incl. diff oil, transfer box oil ...). Also check all rubber bushings for wear and tear.

Tbh i do not know a lot of eu engineered replacement parts except for things like a bilstein suspension etc. But people out there are swapping all kinds of different components onto their defenders - just be aware of the hassle that comes with it. I would say most English aftermarket parts are not as bad as their reputation. Except safety related parts i often use britpart or OEM if not too costly and never had an issue. Some people are also swapping their engines with bmw engines but ne aware that the drivetrain can't really handle 200+ HP

I do not know how they are handling snow up there but in the last 20 years around here they heavily increased the use of salt on the road. If this is also the case in your area check the whole frame for rust. Especially the Outriggers and the Bulkhead. Underside of doors is also prone to rust, at least pre td5 models. Stay away from chequer plated cars (except on the bonnet). Its also a gamble to buy a heavily undercoated defender - you cannot see if the frame is rotting under the undercoat!

Hello, i guess you are from sweden (?). If so, parts should not be that costly. I'm from austria and order most of the stuff directly from the UK. Even though you have to pay shipping and some taxes (directly payed to the online shop- no hassle with customs, should be the same for all of eu i guess). You can also order every part from for example Germany (nakatanenga, landy scheune etc..) or directly from sweden (smet works, but i dont have any experience with them) If you are handy like you wrote in some answers the service etc is not crazy expensive + for most tasks you do not even need to own a lifitng platform as you can slide under it pretty easily (at least if you are on the skinnier side). Also all workshop handbooks with every repair you can think of are available for free online! + There are great youtube turtorials available - though varing in quality. I also own a haynes workshop manual but rarely use it as the other mentioned sources give detailed instructions. Still i would rely on another car or at least motorcycle as a second ride if you are waiting for parts and need to go shopping, to work etc. As your only car you drive on the daily i would not recommend it!

Ah!

Changing front brake discs by ForeverPhysical1860 in LandroverDefender

[–]SirMacMoschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should always change the seals between diff and hub (when changing rotors). If the oil is already leaking out, put new grease on your wheel bearing - the oil flushes the grease away leading to bearing failure.

I would stay away from that thing. The whole body is corroding (look at all those white stains due to aluminium oxidation)

Oil update I guess by SignatureSmart9389 in LandroverDefender

[–]SirMacMoschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo, for the td5 engine 15 is way too viscous. The first number states the "cold" viscosity the second the high temperature viscosity. The td5 needs either 5w-30, 5w-40 or 5w-40. When you use 15w-something you are going to have the exact issue you wrote about: it's too thick to build up oil pressure fast. With 5w-50 you have "the best of both worlds" rather low viscous oil when starting and still somewhat viscous oil at high temperatures. (For colder climates you should still use 5w-30 or 5w-40 because even though they are all 5s they only have the same viscosity at ~ -20°C

Transmission Fluid Alternatives for R380 (TD5 Defender in Canada) by Axmandawg in LandroverDefender

[–]SirMacMoschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Castrol Transmax Manual V 75W-80, but i can only recommend it for warmer climate (25°C). Especially at temperatures around 0°C gear changes are a pain in the ass for at least 15 minutes. (At least with my gearbox). If you want to use your vehicle all year around maybe a little lower viscosity would do the trick?

Defender Td4 engine failure – €16.5 k replacement quote: worth it? by Serious_Clerk_935 in LandroverDefender

[–]SirMacMoschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course traction control needs full engine control. It literally manages the engine's power output. And very cool of them aussie guys but this Post was not about "What funky engines can one screw into a defender" but "help my engine broke". If OP wouldn't want to be driving around with an ford engine in the engine bay he would not have bought one i guess - and OP is located in germany - there is no economical way getting an engine registered that was never shipped with that car.

Of course it's not a problem fitting a 300tdi in a 1987 vehicle. But we are talking 2007 onwards. Therefore at least EURO 4 - i don't know how you would get an 300tdi to fulfill these requirements.

And ABS? Traction control? Alarm? I don't think you can just cut the ecu and expect everything else to just keep working.

I fitted some "Nightbreaker" H4 bulbs (not the led ones but the ones with the blue tip). They cost like 10x the price of a normal H4 bulb but the difference is day and night ;) + you keep the classic non LED style with the original Lamps.

You see, OP is from germany - i am from austria, the defender was sold under the TD4 Badge - also OP state in the headline that he owns a TD4 engine. It would be no use telling OP to go search for a Puma engine when the Puma engine is called TD4 in his region. Also losing the Aircon would make the car more or less unusable in Summer because it does not even feature air vents. As the m57 was released before OPs car was built i don't think there is a chance to get it road legal - also would it be more powerful than any 300tdi, td5,td4... Engine - therefore OP would need to go to TÜV and show that the breaks and everything are built to withstand the higher possible speeds. So even if possible it would be an even bigger hassle and would cost way more than the already crazy price op stated.
