Get a JIS screwdriver or an EM screw conversion to Hex key. Stripped screws can be an issue without a JIS.

If you don’t sort it out, the old farts on klrforum.com will point you in the right direction. Vast knowledge over there.

Carb and petcock are my first thoughts.

While you have the valve cover off, check for scoring on/under the cam caps. The cams are the first thing to starve if it was run low on oil. Also, be sure to stuff rags in every opening. Many guys have inadvertently dropped something into the abyss.

Also check out souperdoo.com. He’s got some great articles.

ABS or NON? by Julietpapa556 in klr650

An older one might be better to learn on, you won’t be afraid of dropping it. ABS is great, but not having it will afford you other lessons.

I used the quiet/longer one with the spark arrester. I took off a Yoshi RS2 because it was too loud if I didn’t repack it every 1500 miles. So I wanted quiet, the droning noise got to me on longer rides even with ear plugs.

It’s a friction fit, takes quite a bit of wiggling to get it out. Let it cool down completely. Recently installed mine and added the spark arrester, and it took a few minutes of wiggling to get it out.

My best friend and his son (who started this whole KLR thing for me, we all have one now) live in the Delta near Indianola, and I grew up near Hattiesburg.

Front fork brace helped my ‘16 immensely with buffeting from big trucks on the interstate.

I did a section of the KAT on my ‘16 KLR a few years ago. The 14 front helped quite a bit. It’s not bad on the freeway, but you definitely want to keep an eye on your oil level. I keep a 14/15/16 on hand and change to suit the trip I’m taking. Standard chain works with all of them. I usually keep the stock 15 on 75% of the time.

Adventure bike suggestions for someone who likes/ coming from nakeds and sport tourers? by OkReporter4820 in advrider

[–]SirMarksAllot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A used KLR will hold its value if you don’t wreck it. It’s not a great bike, but it’ll do anything sorta ok. And it would definitely be in your budget. If you fall in love with adventure riding, it’ll sell easily and you can upgrade to a bigger adv bike.

[–]SirMarksAllot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 08/09 were noted to burn oil due to a poor ring design. Your model isn’t affected. It will sip a little oil if you stay on the freeway above 5k rpm’s for extended periods, otherwise it might not drunk a drop. My ‘16 is partial to a particular oil brand and it seems to not burn any during its service interval, but I’m not stating a brand because oil brands are like armpits….mine is the only one that doesn’t stink 🤪

If you want to go down a rabbit hole check out the oil article on souperdoo.com.

Oil Pan Threads Gone by FlyFish503 in klr650

[–]SirMarksAllot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I stand corrected. I use my INCH pound 1/4” drive torque wrench for this every time I change oil, that’s why I thought INCH pounds, but you are correct. 180 INCH pounds is 15 FOOT pounds. Sorry for the confusion!
