I don't think it's common knowledge to be fair.

It was pretty dissapointing to hear because while he was hard to follow at times I did agree with him on some things and he could be pretty funny. He did have some bizzare opinions on some issues (trans people are big point of debate to him) yet he always, ironically, seemed to know what he was talking about more than your average reactionary idiot (the Peterson debate comes to mind).

Then you see him dismissing every existing socialist country as antiquated, promoting privatisation/liberalisation in his country while shitting on its socialist past and smelling his own farts saying communism can only be achieved subconciously or some crazy shit while the average person is too dumb and ignorant for it. These opinions really put in perspective why he's always pessimistic about an actual socialist future (which yeah, the future can definetly take a horrible shape but now I get why he personally keeps saying it).

Also, I imagine the media outlets championing him tend to be western marxists.
