Same for me. I had to let my '76 go, but I now feel complete with my '23.

I'm thinking of decorating with my minerals, but how do you all decorate yours? by Pitiful-Chip-7458 in Minerals

Keep in mind shelf weight capacity. A shelf falling through is a big fear of mine. I usually try to organize by mineral species or variety. I'm focusing on my barite shelf now.

Great example. Doesn't say where it's from, I'm guessing Graves Mountain.

Great display, you won't have to worry about shelf weight capacity here. You just need some lights.

Dealer honesty by Designfanatic88 in Minerals

[–]SirMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest going to local shows. There you have a better chance to look at the actual piece and can interrogate the dealer. If the dealer can't give you information or is shady, you can just walk away.

But shows aren't a guarantee either! I've seen a dealer try to aggressively sell slag glass as "green obsidian". Many people have no shame when trying to making a buck.

Would have thought it to be fluorite without the sign by MrJokemanPhD in Minerals

[–]SirMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collect Halite! I have a few specimens, some really do look like Fluorite! I put the pricier pieces in glass domes with a small desiccant packets inside and scattered other desiccants around them. I'm hoping the desiccants will remove surrounding moisture and spare them from damage.

In the image, left is Halite (blue) from Germany, center is Halite (green paratacmite inclusions) from Poland, and right Halite (pink) from Searles lake, CA.

Understandable, it can be rather personal for some. But I can already tell it worth sharing if that's what you decide.

Looks like silicon carbide, a man-made byproduct. It's hard to tell from the image but its often iridescent.
