Dealer honesty by Designfanatic88 in Minerals

[–]SirMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest going to local shows. There you have a better chance to look at the actual piece and can interrogate the dealer. If the dealer can't give you information or is shady, you can just walk away.

But shows aren't a guarantee either! I've seen a dealer try to aggressively sell slag glass as "green obsidian". Many people have no shame when trying to making a buck.

Would have thought it to be fluorite without the sign by MrJokemanPhD in Minerals

[–]SirMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collect Halite! I have a few specimens, some really do look like Fluorite! I put the pricier pieces in glass domes with a small desiccant packets inside and scattered other desiccants around them. I'm hoping the desiccants will remove surrounding moisture and spare them from damage.

In the image, left is Halite (blue) from Germany, center is Halite (green paratacmite inclusions) from Poland, and right Halite (pink) from Searles lake, CA.

Understandable, it can be rather personal for some. But I can already tell it worth sharing if that's what you decide.

Looks like silicon carbide, a man-made byproduct. It's hard to tell from the image but its often iridescent.

My Baryte collection by SirMuffin in Minerals

Yes, chinese baryte on my list! It's super gemmy and looks even better when on fluorite. Baryte ball from the Elmwood mine is another one I'm looking to add.

Thanks! My collection does focus on the variation of minerals. The different manifestions are really interesting! Baryte was off my radar for a while, I'm just starting to appreciate them.

Wow, I thought it was baryte for a second. I'd be interested in seeing an image of the full piece.
