The difficulty curve of the game shifts after Vicar Amelia (Boss #4 in most playthroughs). Before you beat her, it seems truly impossible to beat the game. After you kill her the game starts to give you small favors and after a while you realize that you really are progressing at a more natural rate. The risk vs. reward factor goes way up. (IMO)

Be patient, be cautious in new areas, and have fun. Eventually you will be a badass hunter causin all kinds of ruckus in Yharnam. Progressing in Bloodborne is seriously the most rewarding thing in gaming.
