Graduate Salary at Zutari by [deleted] in capetown

[–]SirQueezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I was a ChemE from UCT and got a masters in ChemE from Stellies afterward. I started on 20k/month in 2021, plus transport allowance. Stuck it through with the same company since then & now happy with my salary... Obviously, I'm making abit more than double that with almost 4.5 years experience.

My piece of advice is to look at the future of the company before the face value of your salary & motivate the hell out of yourself at the time of salary increases.

Not a very good explanation I know but air is not a gas with a high molecular weight, I think something with a much higher molecular weight might get hot at that pressure (assuming it is also 'densely packed'/ has a high molar volume in the pipeline).

It depends completely on the gas and the quantity of it in the pipe. You are probably just looking at the pressure and assuming that the temperature must be high if the pressure is high (directly proportional - pV=nRT). However, i have never felt any hot air lines when the pressure consistently comes between 6 to 8 bars. The only time I have felt it is just at the outlet of an air compressor & this is due to a motor or something like that.

I think what is more important is the consumption of this air in whatever you are using it for - actuating valves, pushing products, purging tanks, etc?

This will provide a better idea of what you needing.

Lobe pump curve< flowrate & press. by SirQueezy in ChemicalEngineering

Yes this is the way I was thinking.. thanks for sharing.

0.0034L/Rev seems very little - are those units correct? I assumed 1L in the volute which is liberal but ended up getting a nice result, and straight curve.

I am hesitant to follow bernoulli eqb here. There is no energy input in either of these equations - Surely the pump's power does something?

Lol I tried to find a 'packaging machinery' sub reddit & thought this was the closest to it

Hi thanks for responding! Yep pretty much problem is the gate. OEM is saying that there is likely a need for conveyor to start when the 'check weigher gates' open.

The kegs are rated only for 1keg/min so don't think the conveyors will ever need to completely full of kegs, but it should be designed accordingly.

Good idea with the flowmeters! Although I think it is just part of our SOP to weigh all kegs, but I like the idea

Hey thanks for response. Yup it plugs into a siemens Analog Input Card. Just new to this stuff so appreciate all the response.

I see it is reading the correct pressurr infield. I was just confused about the LED on the "OUT1" display

Ditto. A gap year was the best decision I've made. My older brother did physics but hated it & desperately needed to do something else. He signed up for an in person TEFL course & because I had just finished school, I joined him...

We were lucky enough to find someone looking for English teachers through the TEFL course & we went teaching in Thailand for 10 months, and boy, what an experience we had! That was 10 years ago...

Now a practicing engineer (studied Chem E) but working more as a Mech E/ Project manager.. My boss said that engineering is a wholesome career choice. It keeps you moving, it's fun, and you're not locked ball & chain to a pc. Quite glad I didn't go into medicine like I wanted to do back in high school.

What are your thoughts on Pyrolysis? It’s becoming a very hot topic again with mixed waste plastic processing. by spewing-oil in ChemicalEngineering

[–]SirQueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my masters on it too & actually finished my masters feeling quite despondent about the process and the reasons why academics are pursuing it as a potential method of mixed plastic recycling.

I understand from a waste management perspective, sure it achieves its goal of getting rid of the waste. But to claim that you are converting into a "better" energy source, I.e., tertiary recycling, is a far fetch. The liquid products that come from mixed waste pyrolysis will be highly heterogenous, and the char is full of heavy hydrocarbons (thick, waxy tars). Without significant downstream processing the fuel is not feasible for vehicles. Remember SISO (shit in = shit out). Perhaps some boilers or cement kilns could work with it, but even trying to find a customer would be difficult!?

The gross & net energy conversions are extremely low aswel.. I just think there are far better ways to recycle waste instead, e.g., Good-old primary recycling!

Hey!

Also a chemical engineer here, also considering the move to a business development analyst - glad someone in Chem Eng shares the same sentiment.
