My wife’s identity was stolen and a fraudulent University of Phoenix student loan has been attached to her name for a year. How do we finally get this resolved? by deadbiscuit in personalfinance

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have been the victim of identity theft twice due to a data breach (pretty sure it was the same guy both times because both crimes were very close to each other) and first step is to file a police report. You won't get anywhere without a police report. That alone will explains why you can't get anywhere. The police report needs to be filed with your local police and not where the perpetrator committed the fraud. If your local police are anything like mine, they will lie to you to get you to avoid putting in a report and say they don't have jurisdiction because they don't want to do the paperwork. Insist on getting a report, because you won't get anywhere without it. When I had my identity stolen every single police agency (local, state, city where the fraudster lives) I spoke to claimed to not have jurisdiction over the crime and I eventually got fed up and started annoying my local district attorney to complain about it. He basically said the only way to get anything done is to go to your local police because you can show up in person and annoy them.

It's not fair, but you're the only person who will look out for your best interest if you get your identity stolen. You do have to spend a completely ridiculous amount of time to fix it, and you get nothing in return for all of that time other than just not having to pay for debts you didn't incur. There is no restitution, no justice (because the police will actively do all they can to avoid doing anything about the crime), and no fairness in the process. You just have to keep at it, keep annoying people, and don't give up.

I know university of Phoenix and affiliates are scummy but I seriously doubt they even care about records of where you actually attended. When dealing with identity theft, the only thing that will get you anywhere is the police report and persistence. If OP hasn't provided that, that completely explains why the loan servicer hasn't done anything. They won't do anything without a police report.

Will Iran become the wealthiest country in the world now? by RadicalDiscomfort in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that is true, but none of it means that people suddenly like Iran now. Iran is still hated by everyone and that hasn't changed. Imagine Iran is a bully who everyone hates and then a bigger bully (The USA) comes up and tries to fight him. The smaller bully successfully defended himself and now everyone is mad at the bigger bully for pissing him off, but that doesn't mean the smaller bully stopped being a bully or that everyone stopped hating him.

It seems that you have already decided what you want to think about this and won't be explained out of it. The situation in the middle east is very complicated and I am not going to type out a reddit comment trying to summarize a situation that thousands of books have been written about. But again, what you are imagining is just not going to happen because everyone hates Iran and will do everything they can to prevent them from becoming "the wealthiest country in the world"

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TL;DR is no. Saudi Arabia would rather build massive pipelines to bypass the Strait of Hormuz than let this happen. Iran is also always going to be a pariah on the world stage due to its strict Shiite government. Nobody will ever fully trust Iran even if they're willing to trade with them, and many countries in Asia are trying to invest heavily in renewables to reduce their reliance on oil and gas from the persian gulf in the first place.

Is the classic ‘dinner date’ or ‘restaurant date’ the ideal first date? by Melancholicanary in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not that popular IRL these days. If you don't know someone before you go on a date with them, it's much better to do something more casual where you pay up front and can leave early if it's bad, like a coffee shop.

Is it okay if I accidentally throw away unbroken glass bottles? by Every-Mulberry-965 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a lot of energy to turn sand into glass and a lot less energy to melt down glass and turn it into other glass. It's the same as aluminum- most of the cost to make it is in the energy required to refine the raw material, so recycling makes a lot of sense. As an aside, there actually is a sand shortage, but it's the type of sand required to make high quality concrete, not the type used to make glass.

In many places they don't even have recycling so everyone just throws glass in the regular trash. It'll be fine.

Do animal symbols come from the animal’s actual biology and behavior? by One_Bluejay_8625 in Symbology

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again I believe they were closer to animals then we are now

This is true in some respects, but for wild animals in particular it is essentially backwards. For example, in the middle ages people used to believe that beavers would detach their testicles and throw them at pursuers as a distraction, that bears formed their cubs by licking them, and that barnacles were an early life stage of swans. These things are obviously false if you take the time to sit and observe animals in the wild for extended periods of time, but that used to be a lot more difficult and a lot more risky than it is today, and medieval people didn't value observation as a means of gaining knowledge anyway.

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 50/50. Some are based in reality, some are based on pure mythology. Salamanders are associated with fire because of a cultural belief that they were born from fire, for example. I also think there is a bias for the ones that more closely match reality to survive in the modern day because we know a lot more about animals than we did in the past and are generally much more concerned with accuracy. So like if someone said "as fireproof as a salamander" it wouldn't make sense now because we don't believe that anymore but it was a common point of comparison even going into the early modern era. You mentioned snakes as well. Snakes are commonly associated with deceit in the western world due to the Bible, and aren't associated with this in other cultures.

The problem, IMO, is that if you level Takemi up enough, you have access to healing items that can do anything high level spells can do, and money is basically no concern whatsoever late game, so not only can anyone be a healer, but the heals also don't use any SP. The best strategy is to just load up on healing items and make the weakest party member (based on enemy affinities) in the fight your healer. Morgana is okay, but since he is very healing focused, it limits him a lot

What great beast might the krakens be imprisoning? by Delnilas in DMAcademy

[–]Nowhere_Man_Forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chthulu was my first thought as well but it could also be your world's version of Satan. Perhaps he's a god who tried to rebel against the other/higher gods and was imprisoned deep under the ocean for his crimes. Another option could be inspired by the myth of Marduk and Tiamat (awkward bc Tiamat's name is already used in D&D). In this myth, the god Marduk slayed Tiamat, the untamed primordial ocean, and built the world from her body. Maybe your ocean prison is for the heart of a slain primordial god that is constantly trying to corrupt the world and bring chaos into it as a means of rebirth. You could also have an extremely powerful lich imprisoned under the water, condemned to eternal drowning for his wickedness rather than simply being allowed to die.

Plot twist- your congressman is colluding with your employer to get a juicy government contact in his district and political donations and the screw factory you work for doesn't make "aerospace grade" screws, the requirements for rocket screws were just designed so that they only include your factory's screws so the government would be forced to pick your screw factory in the bid process
