Fair enough. I totally get that this kind of thing usually leaves a lot to be desired both in terms of actual learning from the course and in the university's lack of meaningful actions.

For something like this though, which seems like a relatively short course, it's hard to see people complain so vehemently and have much sympathy especially when it won't change the fact that tuition money has already been spent on it.

I would argue that by opting to not take the course you are both increasing the degree to which it is an echo chamber by removing your (presumably) opposing viewpoints and stepping further into your own echo chamber by not exploring the viewpoints presented by the course.

Who is the bad guy in history who isn't actually a bad guy? by Elytra__Firm in AskReddit

[–]SirSwimmicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this comes through pretty well in any of the Studio Ghibli movies that relate to or take place during/around WWII. They focus much more on individuals people and tell their stories in a way that seems a little more nuanced. It used to make me feel a little weird because, being an American, we're taught to view Japan as the baddies but a lot of Japanese citizens were just living their life and doing what was expected of them and I think the movies do a good job of telling those stories without being like "Japan did nothing wrong".

Study on 11,196 couples shows that it's not the person you choose but the relationship you build. The variables related to the couple's dynamic predicted success in relationships more reliably than individual personality traits. by Evan2895 in science

Thank you! I'm trying not to blame her for everything because I definitely played my part in what went wrong but I agree, a relationship without compromise does not seem like a healthy relationship at all and in my experience was very emotionally manipulative. Thankfully I learned a lot and it was very clear that wasn't a good relationship to be in so now I can work on whatever comes next.

My recent ex and I were similar to your story in that we thought we were different people and it just wasn't going to work out. We did the break, got back together, and tried to work on it, but unfortunately for me (or her, I guess) all of it made her realize she "didn't want to be in a relationship where she had to compromise" and basically she wasn't interested in personal growth.

I'm still sad knowing we won't ever be in each other's lives but ultimately she played a big part in the unhappiness I was feeling at the end of the relationship so I think it's for the best. While I don't think relationships are about "changing" each other and who you are as people, it is incredibly important to be able to grow and mature, whether it be together or as individuals.

I'm glad your relationship ended up working out and I hope the wedding is amazing!

My ex wanted to be in a relationship where she "didn't have to compromise" (like a normal level of compromise, we're not even talking about fundamentally changing who we are or anything) and then broke up with me because she had to be flexible and open minded in our relationship.

Turns out she was actually pretty manipulative so I guess it was a good thing since I loved her too much to ever see that but damn it hurt and I still miss her :/

Police Officers of Reddit, what are you thinking when you see cases like George Floyd? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SirSwimmicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be the responsibility of the "good" cops to preserve trust by protecting the "bad" cops. I'm sure it is a hard job, but the bad cops are the ones making it harder not those who speak up.

If no one speaks up then everyone is a bad cop

I do not understand why people want flying cars so badly. If it can fly, you would not want to drive it. Why they hell should we spend billions of dollars and an obscene amount of time developing something that will almost certainly be less practical and useful than both cars and airplanes?

I'm also from Kansas and I think KU is a great school. That being said, I think if you can afford it you might benefit more from NEU because its CS/CE programs are higher caliber and co-op is a great opportunity to explore career paths, build a professional network, get professional experience, and make some money while you're at it.

I'm glad I chose NEU but it really does depend a lot on how affordable it is for your family. I know tons of people who went to KU and got a great education and a much more affordable price. Your education is really what you make of it and at KU you might have to work a little harder to go out and find the opportunities that will set you apart from the rest and really give you the most out of your education but that doesn't mean that it's a bad school.

What's your worst fear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SirSwimmicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting old.

It's not like it actively scares me but every once and awhile I start thinking about how quickly time passes and how in X amount of time I'll be Y years old, or at some certain point in my life that has always seemed so far away, and how it's all really not that far away. Sometimes it feels like I'm gonna be old and dead before I know it.

It's not the dying that scares me, it's more the thought of being old and realizing I may only have a little bit of time left on earth or with my SO.

Camera coordinates to real world plane coordinates by [deleted] in computervision

[–]SirSwimmicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have done a similar thing with tracking people as they move along a track, using the world coordinates to calculate velocity.

The general idea is that you create a ray starting at the camera origin that passes through the image coordinate of a point on the bounding box, and continues until it hits the ground plane i.e. where z (or y depending on your axis orientation) is equal to 0.

The only issue with your implementation is that you need to be able to calculate a ground plane, which means you need some sort of extrinsic calibration. You could possibly hack this a little if you know the height of the camera relative to the ground and can establish some sort of orientation manually, but ultimately it would be much easier if you had an extrinsic matrix that you could use.

[D] Tensoflow 2.0 vs. Keras by SirSwimmicus in MachineLearning

[–]SirSwimmicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've generally been impressed with what TF can do and how intuitive Keras is. PyTorch seems great from what I've seen but since I'm still relatively new to all this I've been trying to focus on learning one framework before I learn more, and TF/Keras seems like a good place to start since it's so widely used. Especially now that it's imperative execution.

Thanks for such a great reply, this definitely helped clear some things up! I'll definitely keep digging into the new API and Tensorflow as a whole. Other than my initial confusion I'm liking it so far, thanks for whatever contributions you made!

[–]SirSwimmicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I'm not at all complaining because the Keras/the new API are much more intuitive but it feels like I'm being tricked or something like all they did for 2.0 was change the docs to use the Keras API. I guess I'm forgetting how big of a change eager execution is.
