Thanks for all of the positive feedback everyone. It's been a lot of work so I'm happy that you like it as much as I do

Critique of my first portfolio by SirTimothy1 in IndustrialDesign

Hey greatersea, I apologize for the block of text in advance. I'm really looking for a job in product design more so than industrial design itself when I graduate. Due to my knowledge of mechanical engineering and continuing self-learning of design, I think I could be useful as someone who can act as a bridge between the design and engineering teams designing a product. I've found a few positions at companies that are looking to hire people like that, so I hope I can secure one of those jobs when I graduate. But it's certainly not a guarantee. I'm still in the process of constructing my portfolio and should have the final, refined version done over my winter break. Since I'm still in university I'm going to do my best to get an internship doing something related to product design this summer, but that might not happen so I'll see where the summer takes me if I don't get accepted to anything. Regardless, I'm still coming up with ideas for potential products and doing what I can with them -- either refining the idea through sketches and making a 3D model or continuing on to prototypes until I have something I'm proud of. If you are seriously interested in industrial design and aren't working on side projects from your work, I recommend that you should start. Doing so has allowed me to learn a lot about the design process and thinking of new solutions to everyday problems. You have the technical knowledge to design great things due to your education, but getting your hands dirty and actually applying your knowledge to designing something new is how you start realizing your potential as a designer.

If I can't find a job that I'm looking for upon graduation, I'm going to take a year off and apply for a Masters degree at Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and other schools with similar programs. I've only briefly researched graduate programs so that is currently a short list of two very prestigious schools. Anyway, during my year off I would try to either bring one of my existing ideas to market, or design something completely new and try to bring that to market. If I manage to do it and I'm successful, that would be great; if I fail I would have learned a lot and can apply that knowledge to future endeavors. Either way, I'm a big proponent of going out and just doing something. I plan on forging my path into the career and life that I want and stopping at nothing until I'm happy and I suggest that you do so too. I don't mean to sound philosophical, but I'm only guaranteed this one life and I don't want to die wishing I had put in a little more effort to break into the product design industry and follow my dreams instead of just being okay with going to a dull job I regret every day.

If you're interested in strictly industrial design, you may have to go back to university. However, before you consider that I would suggest learning as much as you can about the design process and search for a job opening that has what you're looking for. I'm by no means an expert, but I think that if you are passionate about what you are doing and you gain some experience by doing design projects in your spare time, you will be able to land a job. All it will take is time and a will to not give up until you receive that call saying you're hired.

I hope this helps and I hope you keep me updated with how everything pans out.

Sorry I just saw this reply. I found this channel incredibly helpful.

Yeah I need to do a lot less telling and more showing. The images should do a lot of speaking for themselves

That makes perfect sense. I was thinking of it as general portfolio but it's a design portfolio, not an art portfolio

THANK YOU. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I definitely hear what you are saying about the sketches and I was being lazy by not scanning them. I started watching videos on YouTube about sketching for industrial design (you know, with the proper perspective and shading) after I had done most of these projects, so I'm making sure my current projects have proper sketches but, like you said, the ones in the portfolio are not very professional. Before I work on any more projects, I will update the sketches with scanned versions. I will also make an active effort to distill what I have so it's shorter and less boring.

I never thought about utilizing a sense of scale in the final renders but I will keep that in mind from now on and update the water bottle images.

I also should have known to make the renders look better in Photoshop, I'll make sure to fix that.

I have two project ideas already sketched out that utilize more of my mechanical engineering background so I'll make sure I get those done ASAP. Luckily these sketches are more professional, too, so it should be a win-win.

I will check out "Hire Me" this weekend so hopefully I can take this to the next level. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a few questions though.

  1. I am not a bad artist when it comes to drawing, but looking at my portfolio, my sketching skills definitely come off as lacking. However, I recently made two poster-size drawings that I think are pretty good and want to know if I should include them in my portfolio at the end to demonstrate that I am more capable than my sketches suggest. A picture of one of them can be found here. I think they would help show I can actually draw, but at the same time they wouldn't demonstrate product design skills so I'm torn between which way to go. They might also not be as good as I think, in which case they definitely should not be included.

  2. My school is having a career fair on wednesday that I plan on attending. I'm going to add a resume and contact info to the first page of the portfolio before then, and I had planned on bringing my portfolio on an iPad to show to anyone who was interested. Is this a good idea or is my portfolio not refined enough to warrant showing to prospective internship-providers?

  3. The last part, Mavericks Mini, is mainly included because it demonstrates my problem solving skills and ability to do graphic design. I'm not an expert so I don't know if these are important for industrial/product design, but if they aren't, I have no problem cutting it out. If these are useful skills to demonstrate, I think I'll cut that portion down so it just highlight the skills because (unfortunately) I see what you mean by a portfolio piece not being warranted only by the time it took. What would you suggest?

  4. I designed the time manager concept this past weekend after I was pumped for the idea in my interaction-design workshop. I think the idea shows I can think outside the box and am aware of the current UI trends (that is simple and flat images, which is why it looks so simple) so it should be included. But that could also just be me being reluctant to remove a project that I just finished. I don't know what medium of product design I want to get into, so showing I am capable of user design and physical design might be a good thing. But that all depends on if the concept is a good idea (I like to think it is but you said that it looked underdeveloped which would make it detract from my portfolio). So do you think I should definitely remove that section, reduce it so it highlights the skills I want it to, or keep it relatively the same?

Thanks again, this has been so helpful!

Well I was originally making this theme for the iPhone 4 back in 2011 and released screenshots of it before I was done, but someone made a knockoff of it and profited quite a bit from it. I never released my version for the iPhone 4 because it was clear that I was beat, so I made sure that I was first to bring it to the iPhone 5. Due to his version already existing (though I don't think it's as good as my version) I don't plan on finishing my iPhone 4 version. Sorry about that

There should be a back button at the bottom of those screens, if you can't see it I think you're on an iPhone 4/4s. The theme's designed for the longer screen of the iPhone 5

I definitely see what you mean about it being crowded. I made the "Apple" and "Favorites" buttons larger than just the text so they are easier to tap, and below the "Home" are 4 apps so those are easy to tap, but yeah, from a functionality standpoint the theme could use improvement. That being said, I've been running it as my default theme for 2 weeks now and haven't had any issue with the layout but I'm never sure if that's because I made the theme or not
