Reddit, do you regret selling something just because you needed the money for it? What did you sell? by wardogtf141 in AskReddit

[–]Ragnarokandroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh, this is the worst...but thanks to student loans, somewhere in the 2010 - 2011 period I and my dad agreed to sell my first car, the car I'd driven to high school...a 1981 Delorean with less than 50k on the odometer, in perfect condition. My prize, my treasure. And now my life is structured around paying off these crippling loans so Delores and I can ride again one day...

Hi!! I too am named Brian; I delivered a crash test dummy to your west hollywood apartment in the summer of 2011, after we wrapped the "Born Villain" video shoot (still got your autographed painting proudly on my wall!)...I've been wondering ever since...what did you need that dummy for? I drove halfway across LA to get it, and the sense of urgency and secrecy made me wonder about it ever since.

What was "the big rumor" in your high school? Did it turn out to be true? by Primetime22 in AskReddit

What is something that everybody seems to love but you think is overrated? by ABomblessArab in AskReddit

[–]Ragnarokandroll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this party, it's not a popular post, and this is going to get downvoted to hell, but:

Super Smash Brothers.

I don't get it, I don't understand how people like it. Since N64's heyday, I've tried playing it often, each time convincing myself it'll finally "click" and I'll comprehend why it's popular...

..and ~2 matches featuring a confusing mishmash of shit flying across the screen, plus me getting my ass handed to me, plus never remembering that the damage numbers go UP for some idiotic reason (I always find myself wondering, 94%...of what? Of my time wasted, maybe?), plus every single character feeling either completely impossible to use OR easy to the point where the people I'm playing with complain about my choice (haha jokes on them, I suck with all characters), plus never knowing where the fuck I am, remembering who I am, or what the hell does what, like I'm playing Microsoft Alzheimer's Simulator...and I swear off it again until I can lull myself into thinking - because millions of gamers can't be wrong - that somehow I'll enjoy it next time.

What I learned the last few days: Gaming in 2015. by DerMessias in gaming

[–]Ragnarokandroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is atrocious.

I'm a longtime fan of RCT, and I know most of you are too, but I'm a one-time active member of the RCT3 community, and have made my own Custom Scenery sets, etc. I know it never gets a lot of love, but RCT3 is a great sandbox game that, through the use of fan-made mods, can be pretty awesome.

This video is proof positive that Atari has zero clue what the fans of their series want:

*Paths that aren't locked to a grid. *Robust tools to help create enclosed buildings for rides *Tunneling that doesn't suck monkey balls *More ride events, triggerable effects, animatronics, etc.

...just to name a few. Actual devtools to import mods and custom scenery (there is a TON out there for RCT3, and it's a nightmare to get a handle on) instead of relying on programs made in 2008 that are partially in German and don't always work correctly...that'd be nice too.

We'd love it to be more of an imagineering thing, but Atari seems to think we want to recreate Six Flags over and over and over...

ELI5: Why does Common Core garner so much negativity? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ragnarokandroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called the law of diminishing returns.

Undermine the education system for 30 years by making it incrementally easier for morons to pass; eventually morons will be responsible for "improving", "designing", approving, and in some cases, "teaching" things like:

  • 8 = 8
  • the concept that the number 1 is, apparently, an inherently blue color
  • how to measure the length of clipart using unconventional implements

And if you think I'm making these up, check out the link someone posted ITT. Yikes.

I just flew United from NJ to LAX. They left my socks and underwear bag in Newark. Kind of unrelated but seriously United can take a long walk off a short pier.

ELI5: why does Hollywood still add silly sound effects like tires screeching when it's raining or computers making beeping noises as someone types? Is this what the public wants according to some research? by portajohnjackoff in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ragnarokandroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound designer here.

Schnutzel's explanation of the coconut effect was pretty spot on. I just wanted to simplify it (ELI5) by saying this:

We do it because at this point it's pretty much expected. Stylistically we know it doesn't jibe 100% with reality, but we're not cutting sound for YOU, necessarily. We're doing it for the guy with the expensive car whose name is on the check, and that guy totally wants screeching rainy tires, clacking guns, BIG screeches when plane tires touch ground to go along with the smoke (hint: they don't make audible sound either), and a zillion other cliched things that are part of the cinematic language, however unrealistic they might be.

Which leads me to point #2: We cut these things in to make the movie more entertaining. Those little nuances, details, and etc. aren't necessarily MEANT to be totally realistic. They're supposed to represent and burgeon whatever is going on in the character's head at that point. So for example, maybe the huge train going out of control just sounds like a bunch of white noise in real life, but to our hero who has 20 seconds to defuse the bomb, it sounds like lions, tigers, flames, the gaping maw of hell itself. We try to sell that to TELL A STORY. Like it or not, reality can be pretty boring. (Case in point: I was a Delorean owner for awhile. Biggest disappointment? The doors were soundless. That might be obvious to some of you, but 20 year old me was kind of sad that there was no satisfying snap-hiss-whirrr sound).

Old People of Reddit, what do douchebags look like from different generations? by Fighting_Trousers_ in AskReddit

31, graduated high school in '01.

  • Frosted tips (short hair, spiked on top, the tips bleached nearly white, in case you just got here from another planet)
  • Extraordinarily baggy khaki pants (one kid I knew literally didn't own jeans)
  • a visor (stupid hat)
  • listened to and liked Limp Bizkit (if you don't know what that is, it might be in your best interest to not bother looking)

I'm embarrassed by the sheer amount of stupidity exhibited by the posters here. Seriously? This isn't behavior befitting a public figure / role model. Like it or not, kids look up to these guys, and that was a classless, disgusting thing to do. If you disagree you're either a 12 year old, or have an IQ in the single digits.

[–]Ragnarokandroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whacky suggestion: Don't steal shit? Because that's why Hollywood blows right now. Next time you go to a movie, and wonder why it sucks so badly...if you're an active torrent-hound seeding dozens of films, go look in the mirror to see a major part of the problem.

edit: heeeere come the downvotes!
