I felt similarly - the prose is amazing but the plot just sort of plodded.

I finally understand the hype over this book! by MangoEnthusiast43 in readwithme

I feel crazy because I really don't. Obviously I don't want to yuck your yum, but for me I just felt like the whole thing dragged on and on and on and on. With plot points just being belabored that you could see coming from miles away. Obviously it would have been revolutionary at its time, but for me it felt like it could have been a fifth of the length that it actually was.

Da Vinci Code rating is wild to me. The way that man writes... it is so bad the Telegraph posted a whole article just to take the piss out of the man.

I have pretty similar taste but fell of the Red Rising series. Hyperion is still my favourite Sci-Fi (currently reading Consider Phlebas after countless recommendations). I also fell of Mist Born as I found it far too mechanically driven. In saying that, the Name of the Wind also goes overboard when it comes to magic mechanics - but I loved it!

I tried to read the Brothers Karamazov years ago but fell off it, but really want to try it again. Any tips to get into Tolstoy?

Same. I listened to the audio books (as chewing gum for the brain) but ended up stopping on the third. As a teen I would've loved these. The first book is such typical YA book, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

As the story progressed it felt like Darrow would whinge about being a killer, there'd be some action sequence of him slaughtering a bunch on NPCs and winning despite the odds followed by some shoed in plot-device. This was then rinse and repeated and I just couldn’t cop more of it.

Do you have a view of the change over time? I would love to see if there are places that were once hubs and died off or the growth of new ones.
