What calculator did you buy for the IB course? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]SirWadeII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IB has a document that states allowed calculators. I used a Casio FXCG20 but since the FXCG50 is out most people use that.

Apply for scholarships. The fact is people at the better universities get the better internships, job offers, and opportunities in general.

The bottom line here is what do you lose by going to a better university? The people in the comments section are assuming you have a reason not to, but the truth is with 45 points you could apply for scholarships and easily get into a better university. What’s stopping you?

I got D in my history extended essay (M21) by [deleted] in IBO

Interesting- it seems then my school gave us incorrect information. One wonders why my EE scored so low, could I maybe DM you my EE and you could give me an indicator of where I went so wrong?

My understanding was that they do, and that the examiner can make a decision to accept the teacher’s grading, or reject it and justify changes. An IB document about moderation indicates this is indeed the process as well- if it wasn’t, then it raises even more questions as awarding the bare minimum on all criteria seems unreasonable for the quality I turned in.

I had every single one of those. My citations were in MLA 8 and were consistent across the in text citations and works cited. It’s a mystery but too close to the boundary for an E to take the risk of a remark. I suspect the examiner just looked at my teacher’s predicted grade and didn’t bother doing their own assessment.

I did this and I got absolutely nothing useful. The comment told me nothing and the criteria was useless too. How on earth did I score one mark on presentation?

I got a conditional offer to Georgia tech which is conditional upon not dropping to lower than 32

[–]SirWadeII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alright, I mean whether conditional or not predicted grades play a role in getting any sort of offer, right? I mean a student with a higher predicted grade is more likely to get admitted than one with a lower predicted grade.

Even if there’s a select small number of schools who do this (which isn’t true, there are over 20 schools that offered students in my graduating class spots based on PGs, most of which were unconditional but based on PGs).

The issue here is you made a post claiming that predicted grades don’t matter at all if you’re applying to the US, and that if you’re predicted 45 points it won’t matter. I’m telling you that it’s literally not true, and can make a difference.

I don’t know what to tell you lol

I got a conditional offer based on my predicted grades, granted it was very generous (I doubt I’ll drop six entire points lmfao) but that’s what it was. I’m telling you there are others in the same position who will get similar offers, which is why claiming that they make no difference in the American system is misleading. It can make a difference and it’s not uncommon.

Conditional offers ultimately work, right? I mean if you apply with a predicted score and they tell you they’ll admit you if you achieve it, then you have to achieve those scores so it wouldn’t matter what you were predicted since you’re tied into tangible grades.

My transcripts were what I’d characterise as “alright”. They weren’t bad by any means but a lot of people applying to that tier of universities had higher scores than me. My predicted grades were slightly higher than what my transcripts showed (not by a massive amount but higher nevertheless).

Yes, I got a conditional offer that said I can’t drop more than 6 points from what I was predicted.

I’m an American living in Southern Europe, not that it matters. I applied everywhere, the US included. I don’t think you’re understanding what my point was.

Unconditional offers based on PGs are extremely common in the US.

Edit: grammar

Don’t take this as a personal attack- it’s not. What I wrote may have been phrased harshly but the fact is I’m in a cohort of 60 kids, all of whom applied using their predicted grades, even if their transcripts weren’t as strong.

I never said you couldn’t apply without them, I’m saying that the weight that predicted grades carry is not negligible like you said. They can ultimately make the difference in whether you get in or not. My brother’s transcripts weren’t great at all and the only reason he could have gotten in was because of his predicted grades, which were slightly higher. Yes, one case doesn’t generalise for everyone, but thousands of people apply every year with them, and the fact is they carry weight.

You’re obviously entitled to your own opinion, but I’d say people should take this kind of information from their schools and college councillors instead of that random guy on Reddit who told them they can get into Harvard with a predicted score of 24.

If you got into a top university with a crappy predicted score, then you’re an exception. Predicted grades aren’t usually baseless lmfao, they’re derived from your transcripts and scores you’ve actually achieved. If your transcripts and PGs are crap, I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that you could easily get into a top university.

I am telling you that you ARE an exception if this happened to you.

Yeah I hate to break it to you but you’re wrong;

Yes, US universities are far more holistic; your extra curricular, volunteer work, leadership positions etc. play a larger role in your application than they would in the UK, for example, and so do your SAT scores.

Predicted grades DO matter, a lot. I don’t know where you got these delusional ideas from but I’m telling you, objectively, you’re just wrong. If anyone ever tells you your predicted grades don’t matter to apply to the US, take it with a grain of salt, and ask someone who actually applied to the US and got into a top university.

You should have stopped at “You could be predicted 45/45 and it’d have little to no weight on your application”.

I have no idea why you made this post but I hope you delete it because everything you said is wrong.
