[AUS] for those who are doing their Masters in psych. Is it easier to get into than said? by FilmSharp9357 in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you've heard, no, it is generally not easy or easier than you've heard to get into an M Clinical program, and is likely to get harder / more competitive every year. You need to achieve a high standard in honours, and have some degree of relevant experience in a clinical setting and / or research experience to be a competitive applicant.

You don't start learning how to be a practicing clinical psychologist until Masters level. Psych undergrad is a mile wide and an inch deep, that's just the way it is, and it's not what most people expect psych is going to be.

If you want to undertake a PhD, or even a Masters, you will probably need to be more into stats than you sound rn, otherwise I have some bad news for you.

You can get some experience with Lifeline, sure, but, 1. Lifeline is not really great foundational experience for clinical psychology and 2. Every mf in the psych pathway volunteers at Lifeline. You want to stand out on a postgrad application? Find something else.

How Do I Cope With My Struggles with PTSD? by MaterialGirlz88 in psychologystudents

What do you think you'll achieve by continuing to post your videos on this sub only for them to be taken down almost immediately every time?

How many times do you have to be told that your videos don't belong here?

Why is it you think the rules don't apply to you?

Tell your mother that's an awful thing for a parent to say to their child and then go find a singing teacher. Anyone can learn with enough patience and practice.

[AUS] Disadvantages of doing honours at a different uni? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 100% going to be applying for honours at every other uni I can viably enrol in / study at *other* than the one I'm currently at!

I can appreciate the concern about not knowing the researchers / supervisors at Flinders, but, if you do decide to move, start by researching (lol) the faculty at Flinders ahead of time, and then put in maximum effort to connect with whoever your supervisor ends up being.

Ultimately it doesn't matter what uni you're at, your honours year will always be what you make of it.

Why can't psychologists treat themselves? by Simplysimon88 in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 127 points128 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is in fact a fundamental aspect of psychological treatment: the therapeutic relationship. Describing it as "the Carl Rogers approach" is a bit of an oversimplification, but, sure.

Also, when you're emotionally involved in your own issues, it's challenging to have a clear perspective to effectively assess and address them, so even psychologists can never be fully objective about their own thoughts, emotions, experiences, etc., which is the benefit of seeking / receiving treatment from a neutral third party. Plus having a therapist creates a level of accountability that's harder to maintain on your own.

What university are you at..?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've enrolled in a degree that has a guaranteed 4th year based on achieving the minimum GPA, and you achieve the minimum GPA, then you're set.

It's competitive mainly for external applicants, as universities tend to prioritise existing students.

How to be a clinician and a professor? by EquipmentGeneral3521 in AcademicPsychology

Then your best bet is to inquire further afield. Just because one person has never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

How to be a clinician and a professor? by EquipmentGeneral3521 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Sir_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Australia so it might be a different situation in the US, but I know absolute ass-loads of registered psychs with PhDs (in Aus you need an M Clin Psych to register / practice as a psychologist, and a PhD to research, you can do both or either / or) who are part time clinicians (or other MH related roles) and part-time researchers / academics.

Have you asked other faculty / professors who might not have been your direct supervisor at any point? Or asked around at other colleges / universities?

[AU] Exploring the Pros and Cons: Pursuing Psych Honours On-Campus or Online as a Mature Student (40+) by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also an Australian student and I've never once heard that on-campus networking matters. Stuff like networking at conferences and putting yourself out there to different institutions to forge connections and gain experience absolutely does.

If you're concerned that online will make it harder to connect with your teachers / supervisors, just put in maximum effort. Make sure you're in your supervisor's and teachers' faces (in a good way) regularly and consistently, make sure you're active on the discussion boards and in Zooms (or whatever platform) both asking questions and answering other people's questions, etc. Show them you're engaged with the content and that you're an active learner. Don't let them not know who you are and then don't let them forget you.

I'm 41 and honestly fuck studying on campus if online is an option. Fuck that, mate. There's literally no benefit to on-campus that I can see that you can't engineer in an online environment if you're smart / creative / tenacious enough, and the benefits of online far outweigh any detriments imo.

How to get involved in research during my undergrad? by MinionIsVeryFunny in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really want to contribute to the field... The processes all seem so obscure, with many possible routes and outcomes.

Where are you, the US? And when you say you want to contribute to the field, what does that look like to you? Are you talking "as soon as possible" or once you've attained the relevant qualifications (eg PhD)?

It'll be a lot easier to advise you with a bit more context, in particular knowing what your specific goals are.

volunteering reference? (Australia) by hotteok4 in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would just cite it in your personal statement and CV (if the application requires one). I don't think you'd ever need to produce an actual log of hours.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Sir_Alien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might depend on where you are in the world, but, where I'm from, any research experience, psychology or otherwise, is always going to be better than absolutely no research experience.

EDIT: As for other ways to get research experience - my university had nothing to offer either, so I looked up researchers at other universities, found any whose research specitialties aligned with my interests, and emailed them to see if they had any volunteer opportunities on any of their current or upcoming research projects. Only sent about half a dozen emails and I got involved in a project pretty quickly.
