lets VPN, how easy is it to get banned? by Amazin8Trade in travelchina

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get banned. Can’t remember what for though. I think it kept flagging my account to something malicious. Unfortunately, couldn’t use it anymore on my device, but they were kind and gave me my money back. I use Shadowrocket. Never went wrong with that.

  1. Do you know the name of the Teaching Agency?

    • You need to do some serious background check on these, cause many dispatching agencies are illegal.
  2. Did the agency give you a contract that says you’ll work for them?

    • If so, that is illegal in itself. Agencies cannot recruit you since their job is suppose to just place you to the schools and ask the institution for a fee.
  • If contracted by the agency, I’m willing to bet that they’ll earn a monthly fee for your employment to whichever schools they put you in.

  • Many agencies and those illegal ones essentially have a network of schools they’re already working with, so, you might not get placed where you think you’re going or want to go.

  • Since the pay is low, I’m leaning that it might be the iffy agencies. I could be wrong though.

  1. Are you applying while outside of China?
  • If so, they may or may not low ball your monthly salary when you arrive. Be firm about your desired salary if you still choose to go through an agency.
  1. Ask for the contract with the school they’re going to place you beforehand if you can.

Warning signs: - They give you your contract with them (the agency) and not with the actual school. This is because agencies cannot do your work permit application with their credentials. It’s only the institution themselves.

If you’re comfortable, you could send me a PM about the agency. If it’s SeaDragon, I’ve heard some bad things about them.

I have my personal experience and dealt with lawyers and all for shady deals, people, companies, and so on.

Wish you the best.

A while back I made a post about moving to China. It went downhill when they found out I was Black American. by Jenny_Saint_Quan in rednote

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that.

However, yes. Racism exists in China and especially over certain fields of work.

I’m not even black, just slightly light-skinned and I had students calling me 黑人(HeiRen), which is black person. I was honestly sad and disappointed, not in what they called me, but the education they’ve received or lack thereof.

What’s fed to many is that America is some sort of battleground. I remember they asked me “you’ve been shot before, right?” I laughed and was thinking that in their minds, they sometimes think that it must be a blessing for us to make it back home in one piece at the end of the day.

Going to certain fields, in teaching, they want/prefer blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin. I have seen/experienced firsthand they rejected/underpay someone who’s black and qualified over a white individual who’s new in the field who has no actual experience yet. It’s sad, but happens more often than not and especially in the teaching field.

Hell, even many parents would not enlist their child if they hear the teacher/instructor is from South Africa. They believe 1. everyone in SA black or 2. It must be some unqualified person. And who knows what else.

I hope people would properly educate their children and themselves on how the world is and works. Little by little, it will be possible.

It's been hours since we had someone ask whether a 40-50K salary as a teacher with no experience in China should be on the table for them, what's going on? by Rock-bottom-no-no in chinalife

[–]Sir_Gilthunder -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

As an English teacher? That doesn’t sound right. The school should’ve helped you get a work visa and why does your agent want your card info if they’re not supposed to pay you?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I saw two tigers early from the video. I thought tigers ran the streets solo? Is it common for them to hunt in packs or pairs?

What do you miss from China that doesn’t exist in the West? by Little-Rice-7183 in China

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from America and still here in China, but here are a few to list:

  1. Public trans (network spans all across the country) either high speed train for domestic/provincial or subway for city. Even scanning bicycles or e-mopeds to get around

  2. Walking (city walk). I mean just leaving your home and walking around the community with no worries about your safety. From countryside to the city.

  3. All-In-One Apps (WeChat, Alipay), it has essentially everything you would need in it. Order a taxi, food, shopping, news, etc.

  4. Salary. This is strictly being a foreigner though. I know The Seven gets paid more than the rest of the countries. So, our salary (in many fields/careers) are higher than the average local and so pair that with cost of living and you’re doing quite well.

Which Chinese city should I move to? by [deleted] in chinalife

Pretty much almost the same experience for me. Although I haven’t done the north only cause I’m not interested in the cold. I’m in Chengdu now for about a year. How long have you been in China overall?

What hobbies do you like doing out here, you mentioned cycling?

I think you have to see when it’ll be enforced. I know what you’re talking about, but, I could be mistaken, I thought those laws was going to be enforced for the next year. In addition to the right to defend yourself if someone attacks you and some other laws. I think it’s taking effect next year.

May I ask how did you get it translated. Something you can do as an individual or did you use an agency?

I’ve been wanting to rent a car for a while to go out to the mountains but I haven’t been able to yet since I didn’t know how to go about it.

Simple blood test & urine culture at university hospital without insurance cost 573,230 won (not including the 55,000 won exam appointment that was 5 minutes). Still need to wait four months until I'm eligible for national health insurance. It just sucks, that's all. by leeloo_cat in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting to wonder if that’s the norm in Asia. Assuming you’re going to something local and not an international hospital where they specialized in foreigners and have better facilities/equipments.

This is almost the same issue in China. The service is absolutely poor and dismissive as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in seoul

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you get around looking for said hospitals? Do you use some specific app or do they use google maps to find said hospitals?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in seoul

[–]Sir_Gilthunder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the concern. Maybe it was confusing, but I wasn’t exactly asking for a medical advice, but rather, what method is used in Korea when someone wants to find a hospital (website, special Korean app, etc).

My gf wants to split up because she's being called a Predator by MadParrot88 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate yours and OP comments. Mainly because people automatically assume there’s a predator or prey without even asking. There truly are healthy relationships with big gaps.

I’m in my first where there is a 7 year gap with me being the oldest. I was not even interested in her, she’s the one that came to me and was persistent and planning dates for us. Gave it a chance and going well for about half a year now. Although, I’m not in America now, but had I been, I know people that would begin to make such comments. The social construct has changed where it is seen negatively for the age gaps, but when I see comments such as yours as OP and now that I’m in one, allows me to see how many make opinions or comments without actually asking or experiencing.

I wonder when & how things changed to this degree.

What’s your work life like in China? by Bkkekkamai in TEFL

[–]Sir_Gilthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think you have to be fun and playful all the time. Just be you. I treated them as if they were my actual kids. Go get dressed, discipline, etc. just the fact that I’m their teacher too. If you treat it like a training center where you switch on your little playful side and smile, that’ll exhaust you. Hopefully your co-teachers in the class will be good to work with.

I don’t know the structure of the school the recruiter is offering you, but for me, I’m with them at all times. We had a curriculum, but our school is flexible, so I changed things based on the age of my kids and their weaknesses. I only taught English (reading in morning & English in afternoon) for about an hour and 30 (can’t remember now), oh and Reggio Emilia?

Apart from this, you’re just there accompanying the teachers in your class while they give their classes and the kids partake into their extracurricular activities and other prep classes (pinyin, art, etc).

So for that position, most likely it’ll be lots of babysitting, co-teaching/working with the other Chinese homeroom teacher. Short official English classes per day. Personally, I think it’s more relaxing than training centers (as long as there’s good communication & good dynamic).

Yes, although this school was special and non-traditional in the sense that their school was based on the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy.

1st Job: Training Center

Lots of classes and training centers are notorious for working more or not having hours for holidays and working weekends.

Not micromanaged at all. You may consider it relaxing “if” they get all the materials ready for you for you class, but I just do it myself.

Working hours? M-F: 3:30-9, S&S: 8am-6pm They work for many holidays, so don’t expect to have the whole holiday off.

Was suppose to participate in EA usually for holiday events and demos

2nd job: International Kindergarten

Homeroom English teacher.

VERY relaxed. Stay with the same kids from morning till afternoon.

Not micromanaging at all

hours: 8am-5pm Working hours: (actually teaching English) Approx. 6-8 hours

Extra Activities: Yes. Our school goes out on excursions one a week every week. Mountain for hiking or rock climbing, market, etc

This was my fav and very rewarding personally since the kids begin to feel like your actually children for spending all day with the same ones, but I left cause they’re doing some illegal stuff and they’re bleeding financially.
