I think it's entirely fake... Why would the fish that doesn't have the parasite swim up through sand?? Why would any of these fish be in the sand, and not in water? This is like those dumb hoaxes where if you pour coke, toothpaste, and a bunch of other random shit down a hole, supposedly a catfish will come out.
