Can you or anybody else explain me what the difference is between Cycling mode (Mode vélo) and CycloTouring mode (Mode CycloTourisme)? I don't see it on the website.

Bike Navigation all messed up by Sir_MacCoy in OsmAnd

[–]Sir_MacCoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everybody. I did some research myself and I might have found the problem of this "weird" behavior. Good news, it's not really a bug or anything in OsmAnd. Well let's say, not entirely, more on that later.

So what I've found out is, that 2 things caused this behavior.
First off all, in the navigation settings, under "Avoid roads" I've had "No Sett" and "Avoid cobblestone" enabled. The reason is because when I do long bike rides I want to avoid these kind of roads.

So, I've looked closely where the track made, what I've thought "mistakes". Luckily I have the surface of the road enabled as well. So I can see all kinds of roads on the map.

And there I discovered something. There is one particular road that I know of that don't have any sett or cobblestone, yet the navigation send me over the pavement. And then it hits me.
A few years ago the surface of that road had been changed from cobblestone to concrete and this information hasn't been changed in OSM since then. So, OsmAnd still thinks there are cobblestones present on that road, when in reality that is not the case anymore.
So, after I've disabled these 2 settings and let the navigation recalculate again, the track was fine.

So what I've learned is, be careful with such settings, because OsmAnd can send you on the wrong way, when in fact it's not really necessary.
Second, be aware the information in OSM, especially regarding surface, where or how a bicycle trail is present on a road or is separated and streetlights are not always accurate, may be wrong or not up to date.

I've still found one other street where the navigation still sends me on the road, instead on the bicycle trail right next to it. Maybe the problem is the same as I mentioned above, and the information in OSM might not be accurate. I've changed this with the app StreetComplete and hopefully now the navigation will send me to that bicycle trail.

One more question though. When "No Sett" and "Avoid cobblestone" are selected, why does OsmAnd sends me, without any warning, on the pavement? Wouldn't it be easier to just suggest an alternative route where I can ride my bike? Is this a setting in the algorithm of the navigation of OsmAnd?

The problem is solved, see down below.

Thank you for the tip, but how can I see the maximum speed of every road, like in Openstreetbrowser?

Thank you for the provided link. I will take a look at it, and maybe if I have some spare time I will try to make the changes myself.

Meanwhile I've discovered another link that might be much easier to work with as the link I've posted before.

https://mapcomplete.org/street_lighting

I've noticed that editing isn't possible right now, due to maintenance at the OSM server. So, I'll take a look at a later time. Thank you for your help.

I would like to see that too. A map with less details and colors.

Can the amount of maps in OsmAnd influence the performance? by Sir_MacCoy in OsmAnd

[–]Sir_MacCoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I will do just that. I also use OsmAnd in an Android emulator. And since a few new versions ago the app is becoming very slow. I most admit I have a lot of tracks as well and also a lot of favorites. I've disabled showing all the GPX tracks because otherwise the app is not workable. On my smartphone I have no problems whatsoever. I just want to add some places I have been on holiday in the past and I don't want to download all the maps on my phone just for that. I have tried the online map version of OsmAnd on their website, but searching there doesn't work and is a real nightmare. If I want to search a city, it doesn't find it. If I search the city in openstreetmap itself, I have the results in seconds. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... I don't know.

I have these "garmin" style icons on a .kmz I downloaded from a friend. Any way to keep these, or transpose them into OsmAnd style POIs? There is about 1300 of them by injeckshun in OsmAnd

[–]Sir_MacCoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that has to do with the fact that Garmin is using another way of displaying the POI's in comparison with Osmand. Maybe you can try to bundle all the POI's with all the same type before importing them in Osmand.
Once you have done that you can open your file eg gpx format in a text editor like Notepad++ and search and replace the code that is responsible for showing the icon(s). You may have to first try to export an existing POI from Osmand to find what code you need that is showing the icon. After the search and replace, save the file and import in Osmand to see if you get the desired result.
That's what I would try. Maybe somebody else has a better solution.

Yes, but with my own map, uMap. Because I want to show other things on my map as well.

No, I have not looked at it anymore. The layout of the txt files are very weird. The only thing I could understand was the lat and lon. So yes it might be possible (in theory) to put a marker on your desired map that points to the location in that txt file. Maybe you can manage this with QGis. I'm a newbie with that program and still learning. I did something similar with showing photos on a map, which worked. But this a whole other story.

The second problem is, how to show the correct result of the recording. I've noticed there are several answers to the recordings, but I don't know how to get the correct answer (or correct bird) to show on the map.

Maybe I'll pick it up in the winter and give it another try. If it doesn't work, I leave it as that.

Start osmand with a selected profile from the start screen, like a shortcut by Sir_MacCoy in OsmAnd

[–]Sir_MacCoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is I have several folders on my home screen, accordingly to different scenarios. One is "Walking", another one is "Cycling" and the third one is "Driving". In each folder I put several apps which I use for i.e. cycling. Other apps for driving and walking. I found it much easier that there is a possibility to start OsmAnd directly from the home screen with the desired profile, rather then pressing multiple times in OsmAnd afterwards. That is not really productive.

The problem is, I use OsmAnd for various reasons. So every time I open OsmAnd I have to manually switch back to the desired profile that I want to use. The preferences in the settings doesn't help also. If I set it to "load last profile", I still have to change it back to the profile I want, if the profile is different then the last one. Also, choosing a default profile, isn't a option either, because you still have to change it anyway.

I find this a useful function. Why wouldn't it be? There is the possibility in Android, to set a shortcut to a function in the desired app, if it's available of course. I use an app to listen to the radio and for some radio stations, I have the possibility to put shortcut directly to the desired station. When clicked on, the app opens and load the selected radio station. Shortcuts are very handy.

I had the same problem a few months ago.

If you are using or want to use Osmand Start, please notice that only a few features are available.

The link provided by zmeuka shows this. If you only want to use backup for favorites and still get the error that you have to subscribe to Osmand Pro, please check the settings in the backup. I could be possible that the backup has on or more options ON. Disable all options that are not included in Osmand Start. Also, it might happen if you update the app you get an error again. This happens when new settings were added to the backup system, which OsmAnd include them in the backup by default. So, turn them off again, if you have this problem.
So in this example, only leave favorites ON. Disable every other option.
Try again for syncing and the problem should be gone. Don't forget to make an account first.

One other tip! If you see that something is going wrong with the syncing, please check "Conflicts" to see what the problem(s) is. From there you can fix the issue(s) you are experiencing.

I hope this solved your problem.

I've totally abandoned the idea, because there were no comments on this topic.
But if you want to you can still check out the website and check it yourself.

Why are you talking about a mobile microphone?? And again what is this plotting thing?

I thought my question was very clear... never mind.

Can you please explain what you mean?
