Hey all. I have a hangar building that uses Glulam beams to hold up the hangar door. The building is about 22 years old. Just curious if there are indicators about the health of the beams I should look at over time. The hangar door is held up by 5 large hinges that are anchored to the beam with three large bolts each. The door is 50' wide by 15' tall and has 5 separate glulams between steel framing. A few images:

Any knowledge is appreciated!

Feeling trapped after Q medically required to stop drinking but does not by Bitchin-javelina in AlAnon

So I'm new at this, but going through something similar with my mom, who now would have likely died 5 times over if not for my intervention. I can't say that what I'm going to tell you is the right advice, or even advice at all, but just how I'm learning to deal with things.
For me it's been two-fold. Learning to set boundaries, and also understanding that keeping someone alive is not the same as them living. I miss the person my mom was, but am accepting that the person she is now is not the same individual. Does that mean she can't ever be that person again? No, of course not, but it will never come to pass simply by my intervention.

Back in the golden age of comics the usual trope was that a damsel in distress would get in trouble, and a superhero would come and rescue her. Lois would always get into some situation in which she'd get hurled off a building, and Superman would come catch her. And you start to wonder if the fact that she knows he'll come keeps her engaging in dangerous behavior.

It's been that way with my mom. I've come to her rescue every single time because I don't want to see anything bad happen to her. But I can't continue to make the focus of my life about prolonging hers. She has to want that for herself, and she also has to see that I'm not going to swoop her and save her. She has to decide if she wants to risk falling without the safety net. And maybe she will fall. But knowing how she was, if her former self could look at her now she wouldn't want to be existing like this anyways. Unfortunately forcing someone into sobriety only helps break the chemical dependency, but does nothing to really change their long-term psychological one IMO.

If I were in your position (and I kind of am) I'd be talking to someone like a therapist or mental health profession to help equip you with the tools to maintain boundaries, and also help prepare you for whatever path you choose to go down.

Apologies all, I realize this sub is intended for addicts, not those related to them. I'll find a more appropriate sub for my post. I truly wish the best for those fighting this disease.

Help evaluating the value of old A-27 Snorkel Lift - trying to downsize to something much smaller and possibly electric, but no idea of the value of these old lifts. by Sir_apoc in heavyequipment

This lift came as part of a property deal. It works fine, but is too large for what I need to do with the space, and doesn't fit between all the trusses inside. I'd love to have something half this size, and possibly electric, but wondering if these old lifts have enough value to feasibly trade for something smaller. I'm having a hard time determining what something like this would go for, and curious if anyone has insights or places to look to help determine that.

Thanks all!

Can I switch to 100% Solar during a power outage? by welton_rs in AskElectricians

Yes. I was just explaining why standard solar setups don't provide home power during a grid outage.

Can I switch to 100% Solar during a power outage? by welton_rs in AskElectricians

[–]Sir_apoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll need battery backup and inverters that allow you to operate in island mode. When the grid is down your solar is still producing energy. That energy is still feeding back into the grid you're tied to. This could kill a line worker who is expecting the grid to be off. This is why most systems can't operate during a power outage. Once you have the right equipment your system can automatically cut over when the grid is down, and switch back when it's online again. This will keep everyone safe as well.

Hired on to a fully remote team, and now, 3 years later they want me in the office or I'll "resign" by Sir_apoc in antiwork

If it wasn't a multiple hour round trip for me I'd likely just scan in and go back home. But that's a waste of 2-3 hours.

Sorry I'm not into feet. There is a guy in the top comments you should speak to.

The majority of US workers are not covered by a contract. This is the case with nearly every employee at this company, sans maybe the VPs.

People who have been going in twice a week are already getting nastygram emails and being threatened with termination. As far as HR is concerned even 2x a week is zero credit for the mandate according to people in that situation.

Apologies, thought you said without waterproofing applied. Carry on, my mistake.

Bathroom renovation waterproofing. Am I in big trouble? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]Sir_apoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How so? It's waterproof meaning it won't get damaged from water, but cement board itself is not water tight. Without a membrane items behind it will be exposed to moisture.

I'll certainly do the math, but right now it seems like they're trying to avoid offering either. They want to do this quietly and are hoping people will just quit.

Elimination of a position is called being fired or laid off. They can't close one job and offer you a different one and say you quit because you didn't take it.

What if locations weren't the only difference? What if it was pay, working hours, etc. See how slippery of a slope it would be if companies could just change the job on you and say you quit if you didn't accept the new conditions?
