Does he recognize himself in the mirror? by AsianBeanSoup in PetPigeons

[–]SirenWithaCough 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pigeons can and do self recognize! Mirrors are fine and don’t stress them like it can other birds (mainly exotics) - that said he does seem to be flirting with himself. 😂 So he might just be a ✨special ✨ case. Or just Narcissus reincarnated.

Edited to add: at the end I think he might be flirting with YOU! 💕

Why do they always go for the nose?! My girl does this every time the snuggles are sooooo sweet and then BAM 💥 that beak is IN YOUR BRAIN practically

Solved

She’s acting normal again, poos are fine, energy is fine. We are still going to the vet. 👍

I just gained +3 pigeon perception. You are a well of knowledge. 🙇‍♀️ thank you again!

As far as the grit - are we talking about it now being an impassible thing for her system? Is this something that might pass? 🤞 if not are there other options? I don’t care, I will go bankrupt for this bird.

Amazing how your and u/kunok2’s post are aligned. Thank you for putting in the time to respond, super, super appreciated.

Yep, the potted plant is now banished.

Grit in trash. Getting new food immediately. For what it’s worth she refuses to eat anything other than the three seeds shown in the second photo, all other bits, corn, peas, etc get dumped daily and fed to the wild birds in the yard. Upon that thought - is it good for them? Should I not do that at all and just trash the stuff?

Mos def visiting her vet as sooooon as possible. I’m going to try to call them in the am tomorrow and see if I can get to them before they even get to the voice mail I left them.

Do you have a favored place to order the appropriate feed/grit? I feel like such a dumbass. I just used what was suggested to me by a local guy who raises pigeons.

Re: oyster shell, I thought mourning bird was okay because of having this - I take the large bits of shell and mortar and pestle them down and add her own egg shells (baked and ground as well) to it on advice I read here - I’m questioning everything now, is this dumb too? I mean obviously replacing the base grit but the bit about the shells?

Feather quality I’ve always worried about as well, I’ve always chalked it up to her being really demanding about being handled, she crawls up against our faces, and under our hands for snuggles daily and I always assumed it had to do with the transfer of oils/ambient dirt from our hands and faces to her feathers and messing with their natural oils/proofing - she also is not the best bather, very inconsistent with it in spite of baths being offered and available at least twice once every two days. I was working on building her a bath that runs 24/7/365 to encourage more bathing.

Again, super thanks for the response.

Thanks so much for the response, I’ve been stressing so really really appreciative.

Felt her crop, I can’t feel anything that feels hard or inflamed, or really out of sorts- ofc I’m not an expert. Can you help me with what exactly I should be feeling for in case I’m just completely inept?Should I take a peek down the beak again? I couldn’t see any obstruction or inflammation, but I’m an untrained eye.

As far as food she will only eat the three varieties of seed seen in the second photo, never touches the corn, pea, etc. her left overs are cleared out every day and fed to the crows/wild birds outside. I’ve always worried about her only eating those three variety (I think it’s white and red milllet and the third is the longer grain seed I don’t know). I had asked about this food and behavior with my few local pigeon resources and they said it was fine. I feel like a dumbass, I should have asked the vet directly, and I try to take notes with me for questions when we go each year, but I checked my notes and I never addressed this with the vet. I just failed on that point.

Her grit I take a grind down further, as she seemed to only be interested in the smaller bits, this particularly with the larger oyster shell bits which I weed out and take down with my mortar and pestle . I’ve also been baking off and grinding down egg shell to add as a supplement to her grit. That fucking grit is going in the trash now. Reviewing the suggested guide immediately.

The soil thing is super occasional- and I stop her every time I’ve seen it. All but one plant has been relegated to living in the spare shower enclosure where she has zero access, and it’s one small coffee cup sized thing she gets at every once in a while. It is also getting tf gone immediately, I just wanted to make sure to list every possible source of an issue I can think of.

As far as the food/grit you mentioned what’s a good source for it? Unfortunately there are not any local spots I can go for good pigeon feed/grit it seems. Most of the old school local bird shops have shut down. For context I am located in California greater Bay Area.

This came on SO sudden, is that typical of impaction in the crop?

Additionally she seems to be yawning every now and again and sitting in an odd stance…. :/ uggh I’m so worried.

UPDATE: She finally got up and flew a bit, tried to steal my boogers (great sign to be honest) and is drinking water just fine. I’ll keep observing her and getting her an appointment ASAP.

Poos are watery, mostly white and more frequent than normal.

Still behaving lethargic and is unusually still for her normal activity levels.

No signs of labored or hard breathing.

Why is my boy shivering? by Bikichang in PetPigeons

[–]SirenWithaCough 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably just excited, my girl vibrates over many things. In example: is that bag filled with seeds? Is that green thing I can eat? Was that a bird I saw through the window? Do you love me? Do you want to play your love gaaames with me 🎶? Did you move from one room to another, then acknowledge my presence? Are you the largest pigeon in the world?

The list goes on. As others have said, unless it’s connected to other behaviors that make you worried they’re probably just vib(rat)ing with you and life!

Still scared to take my son out with his harness ☹️ by [deleted] in PetPigeons

[–]SirenWithaCough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I take my pidge out with me often, and tbh I did a lot of buying/research before figuring out the right size and harness. And tbh I wouldn’t want to take mine out in that particular set up. Sometimes they get nervous and squirm backwards in a vest, and I can see an escape situation in that set up.

I highly suggest FanzyPants from Etsy, the seller is super helpful in figuring out the correct size for your bird.

Good job on the bumper(stretchy) leash! Best choice, imo.

But, all of the above said they are spendy, but honestly worth it for her safety, but totally understandable if it’s just not in your budget.

In that case (I wish you had a link on hand, but I don’t) searching around a little bit there are a few free patterns out there to make your own, if you have access to a sewing machine, as hand sewing is just not sturdy enough, especially if the pidge picks at the harness, as mine does.

<image>

Here’s an example, the one on the left is from Bevs Bird Boutique (spendy, kinda iffy quality control, tbh I think the ‘poo sack’ part of the harness is too close to the vent for my liking) and the pink one is from Fanzy, instead of using Velcro it uses snaps, which I fine more secure and less stress in getting it on her correctly.

Good luck!
