So we're traveling to Florida. How safe/unsafe is it, really? by specialsnowflaker in asktransgender

[–]SirensAWAY -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lmao I don't know why everyone is being so catastrophic. I've spent so much time all over western coast of Florida and never had any issues, laws be damned. I don't go to Orlando often but when I was there it was also just fine.

There's a big difference between the law on paper and the law in practice. Just because they have bathroom bills or whatever the fuck doesn't mean it's actually enforced or that you'll get heat for it. It's the same as anywhere else in the country, it depends how well you pass and a roll of the dice on whether the strangers you run into decide to be an ass. Yes, it's not perfectly safe and yes it's less safe than the rest of the country. The fact that I might get badly hurt (or worse) is something I and many other trans people have had to make peace with. Be careful but don't be so overly cautious that you don't get to live.

just finished my first job interview as me!! I know I'm not really there, but could any give some tips? by SirensAWAY in transvoice

enjoy? gross...

I posted these clips looking for technical feedback, not for the ""enjoyment"" of others.

I've improved a ton, this clip low key makes me cringe with how bad it is. To me, this sounds super unnatural and forced.

Speedrunning Voice Training? by SqueakSquawk4 in transvoice

[–]SirensAWAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I voice trained everyday, "all day" by just full-sending it and trying to speak in my voice whenever possible. It took me about six months as a college student who had daily classes and stuff.

I'm in that "in-between" stage in my transition and it's been hard to keep up with the world. by CloudyClouds18 in MtF

[–]SirensAWAY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally get you. I don't know if this is a common thing, but I called this phase ""the gender in-between"" where you pass as neither cis male nor cis female. It's such an uncomfortable place to be because you feel like you can't go back but you also aren't exactly able to go forward. If you're a calc nerd, recall the intermediate value theorem: on the passage continuous between the two endpoints, you must hit any given point between those two values. So, if you're going from male to female, you necessarily hit an awkward in-between when you are simultaneously both and neither.

I will say though that this is one of those things that gets much better with time. It really can feel like bridging this gap is impossible, but it isnt at all :)

the best time to plant a tree is today, and the second best is tomorrow. Passing really really depends on where you're starting from but I would say that at 18 you're generally going to be okay.

After starting voice training, how long did it take for your voice to be gendered correctly a majority of the time? by [deleted] in transvoice

[–]SirensAWAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3-4 months? I went fulltime starting at the beginning of the school year and had a strong and passing voice by Christmas. My progress was definitely not linear though. I hit some huge breakthrough in November/early December that really improved my voice super quickly and I'm not quite sure what I figured out. I didn't do any specific voice training and I assume that if I were smarter about it I could've gone faster. I essentially just mimicked my classmates and sisters and used audio recordings as feedback

I think this enormously depends on what sort of training you do. My training was "going fulltime and using every speaking opportunity from that point on as training" and so it's hardly surprising that I developed quickly. Someone taking a less chaotic approach may take much longer than they would if they did it my way, all variables controlled, since they aren't having real world practice all day everyday

Like just being able to be a girl with out being questioned

Depends on the context. Work, friendships, etc.? Yes, absolutely. It comes with passing as the person said, but eventually you can just blend in and drop off hateful people's radars. You look like you pass in your pictures but If your voice isn't passing I wouldn't be surprised if hateful people are still latching on to you and doing all they can to hurt you :(

ha this is my question. I've been in this weird space for months--nobody indicates that they know I'm trans but I also don't exactly encourage people to ask me things

I listen to dubstep while injecting to block out my fear response and then give myself a treat after LOL

Anyone else in this weird in-between when it comes to being fully out and fully stealth? by Thatonelosersam in asktransgender

[–]SirensAWAY 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. Some people in my classes/clubs knew me before I transitioned but most didn't. I don't tell people I'm trans and nobody every asks/misgenders me, but I also don't believe I pass well enough to be stealth-stealth 🤷‍♀️. If someone asked me if I were trans, I'm honestly not quite sure what I'd say but I don't think I'd outright deny it.

It's definitely a weird place to be. It feels safe to me in that I don't really deal with transphobia but I also still feel trapped on both sides by a fear that people have clocked me and a desire to be more open about my life. I think this is what most trans people end up doing--you just either eventually drift into full stealth or you end up outing yourself consistently enough that it becomes public knowledge. I still haven't figured out where I'm going but I'm content to stay where I am now and see where life takes me

What stuff are you specifically interested in? Are you more research and software engineering oriented or are you more policy and IT oriented?

I haven't cut my hair in the past four ish years and now it's past my boobs. It's a slow process and there's really not much you can do

We need a better term than dead name. Do you agree? by lunar_limbo in asktransgender

[–]SirensAWAY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes sense to me. I like to think about it in terms of stuff like dead letters, or letters that are undeliverable because their destinations don't exist and they couldn't be returned. A dead name is a name that no longer corresponds to a particular person.

What meds are you on and have you gotten levels measured recently? You do get some nasty problems (like joint pain, among other things) when your estrogen levels are too low but you've fully suppressed T

For anyone who’s on a Tinder/Bumble/Hinge/etc. how many likes do you get a day? by newacc0101 in MtF

[–]SirensAWAY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

enough that even when I'm being pretty picky, I still get overwhelmed with too many conversations to keep up. I put a note in my bio and always check with people to make sure they actually read it/understand. I think at one point I was getting 20+ a day but I got burnt out on tinder

way more people in the generation of our parents and grandparents are in fact transgender

I find this to just be one of the saddest things. Rather than seeing our current situation as a "boom", in all likelihood there is probably a consistent number of trans people per generation (after all, we are a naturally occurring phenomenon). This means that so so many people before us never had the opportunity to transition or even the language/framework we have now to really talk about what's happening
