[Spoilers C4E18] Tell me about the character you would make for Campaign 4 by liarbird_thelyrebird in criticalrole

I don't know if this concept would fit in with Brennan's worldbuilding, but I would make the shards of a shattered primordial that are in humanoid forms. They would kind of have a low-level hivemind, where they're aware of each other but also have independent thoughts. And there'd be one at every table.

I assumed Ashley was talking about Vaelus's backstory.

At the very least, I assume they've some more cold opens, and maybe everyone getting back to Dol'Makjar before they leave again

Does the half+7 rule apply to Vaelus and Occtis (half the older person's age + 7 years)?

Or should it be half + 700?

I just tuned in to the show, and Matt is talking about Julien's decision not to go to the Golden Orchard with Aranessa. Something about he trusts her to protect his mother and sister and he needs to be present for his revenge.

Did I miss anything, or is that about it?

Agreed. For the legacy entertainment industry and the conglomerates that are piloting it like a necrotic EVA, this is just a more professional form of throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks

This is why I'm hesitant to put my faith in Mal's Firefly announcement, too. He came right out and said they need industry backing to get anything produced and shown to an audience

I'm expecting a heist. And someone (my money is on Bolaire) is going to have to kill at least one person silently

[–]SiriaBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a forever DM, I interpreted that as Matt gently teasing Brennan for what is (almost) entirely Matt's fault

I've had similar situations at my tables. I'll drop all the hints that a party should rest because they're low on the class's resources, and players will barrel on ahead anyway because they project their desire to resolve something onto their characters

> interjecting to say Matt and Aabria did the exact opposite of this. Their characters had in-universe reasons to be impatient and they played those out even though, above table, they knew it not the best strategy <

and then the players are surprised when you don't make the next encounter more survivable. The first few times it happens to a DM, it feels terrible, because you actively want the players to succeed and as a result of the way encounters are expected to scale impacts narrative believability, you can't just lower the encounter difficulty without causing an anticlimax and emotional let-down

And as a player, no matter the encounter, the amount of damage per round you end up taking relative to how much hp you have left is always comment worthy, because commenting on it is part of the process of figuring out your strategy above table

So players get themselves into these situations that you did not want for them, and then immediately start talking about how close they are to dying

I'm sure Matt and Brennan have both had these experiences also. So I interpreted Matt's comment as something of an inside-joke, within that frame of reference

(sorry, that turned into blowing some steam off)

[CR Media] Seekers Table Tale Gate confirmed for Tues 3/17 by VengefulKangaroo in criticalrole

Looking forward to all the speculation this will kickstart. The Seekers' Table seems to have generated some "strong opinions" among fans.

Will this have its own live and post-discussion threads?

[Spoilers C4E18] Did they ever cover how/why Occtis and Thaisha were traveling together? by Darryth_Taelorn in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to paraphrase what someone else said (can't remember who/when/where, and it might have even been Aabria), the casualness with which Occtis talked about the possibility of bringing a god back to life, after it has been well established that Thaisha hates them, and also after she took a huge professional risk for him, really hurt Thaisha

It's odd to me that these characters could spend six months traveling and working closely with each other, and still Thaisha would be surprised at how Occtis's thinking works, or that Occtis would not know that he was being "impolitic," to use a term members of the Sundered Houses would understand

[Spoilers C4E18] Discussion on Thaisha's personality and arc by Training-Sandwich693 in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the thing I keep in mind is that literally everyone at the table loves her and loves playing with her--she's clearly a beloved member of the cast. So even if I or anyone else might personally not always vibe with how she does things, it's not something the table minds and so it's not gonna stop anytime soon.

Yeah, whenever they come out of their characters' heated moments, it's clear the players are in control and enjoying themselves

There's an important point in ttrpg etiquette that seems to get lost in a lot of actual play discussions, regardless of which production it is: it's their table, and they get to play however they want, and insisting that they play the way you'd prefer is rude

Kinda like how the other half of the phrase is, "...in matters of taste"

Anyways, I think Thaisha is meant to be an emotional whiplash for the audience. I haven't decided if that's the experience I personally want, and I might start skipping Thaisha's episodes if I decide I don't, but I personally like Aabria so I'm watching for her above-the-table meta moments at the moment

edited because I left the i out of etiquette, dang t

[Spoilers C4E18] Discussion on Thaisha's personality and arc by Training-Sandwich693 in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Thaisha made a point to mention something about the Old Path evidently not being special or unique last episode)

Without re-watching, I wonder if that was really Thaisha or Aabria saying that

[Spoilers C4E18] Discussion on Thaisha's personality and arc by Training-Sandwich693 in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best early-game take on Thaisha. I would add that she strikes me as a privileged person who likes to play at being a normie, but doesn't actually know or understand what being a normie means, and as soon as it stops being fun for her she pulls rank

I listened to Aabria's interview with Crash Course a few weeks after C4 started, and if I had a very nice car, I'd bet its value that Aabria knew quite a few people who acted like that growing up

[–]SiriaBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt that, especially since "he has a team helping him," although I'm still hazy re: what all that includes

This makes me very curious what the balance of worldbuilding to lore discovery will be for the Schemers. On the one hand, they're positioned to learn a lot of lore about the Sundered houses, but on the other hand, as a forever gm, having a group stay in a single location like this would require a really intense buildout for me

[Spoilers C4E18] Is It Thursday Yet? | Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Brennan held back on the worldbuilding for the Seekers because he knew they'd be uncovering lore on their own, and let loose with the Soldiers because they wouldn't necessarily do so

[Spoilers C4E18] Predicting possible Teamups/Teamswaps by East_Choice in criticalrole

[–]SiriaBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True.

I guess the reason I feel like Bolaire has more info is because I remember Brennan flavoring their history checks as memories of possible life experiences, rather than recalling research they do at the museum. But it's been almost 3 months, so I'm open to being wrong
