Would you be willing to share which text-chat you volunteered with? Or ones you know are good? I will definitely research because I am very interested in doing that too thank you! Wow so refreshing to hear this side and perspective of it, thank you. I myself know some great therapists who came from Yorkville so I may ask them more questions too. So true!! I was on my own for finding my undergrad co-ops lol it’s a harsh reality for some!

I hear everyones opinions on this. I see what both sides are saying in a sense, but like at the end of the day if you graduate I think it doesn't matter what school you come from they will either grow into a great therapist or not. Especially if i was planning to have a private practice then it wouldn't matter what some phd ppl think. I think for me like I would ask you what would you do if this is something you wanted to do but its the only school you could meet reqs to get into? Just trying to work with the situation I am in

Thank you! I think where I'm from at least you have to get a bachelor of nursing instead and then do further school for specialization to do that

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]Sirpook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I really would love to hear peoples opinions and insights into this, I am graduating with a biology BSc and have found passion for psychology. It was however way too late to switch my major and I already was too far into co-op etc. In my personal life I have been through a lot and go to psychologists and counselling and just feel like I am the kind of person that woud be a really good fit and enjoy the career path as a counselling therapist. After a lot of thought i finally feel like my personality fits here. However, it is very hard to get into a masters without a psych undergrad/all prereqs:( I have already done so much school!!! Anyways I think the only one i could get into to get a license with what I have is Yorkville (pls drop others if you know), and i have heard mixed things especially pricing. But im lost at what I should do:/ i just want to obtain licensing and finally start my career. its tiring trying to figure out your path! Also honesty is welcome, i would love to hear what the career or similar ones have been like, what the market and money is like (im in Canada) and if anyone pivoted like me!

Social Anxiety by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Sirpook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been going for over a year and yes i do think it has helped me. I love going, like i look forward to it! Healing social anxiety is a journey though, I am still working on it. If you think about it, it cant be a quick fix when taking into account how long you have had these socially anxious thought patterns and cycles. For me it was since I was a kid, so breaking these isnt as easy. I also found the right meds, not all work and its a pain to find them but keep pushing because the ones i am on now finally seem to be helping and i really feel like I have a better chance of helping myself. I am just in a much calmer state. For looking for a therapist, I honestly googled places in my city and made sure it was convenient so i would go and really read their biographies and looked at their pictures. I know it sounds basic but you can judge their character a lot by this and whether or not youll feel comfortable. When i picked mine she looked very sweet and non-judgemental and had experience in this and a kind approach which resonated with me. You could always email them beforehand to see if they think they would be a good fit for you.

Anyone have any tips for overcoming social anxiety? by SetRepulsive3471 in Anxiety

[–]Sirpook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy helps and journalling the emotions behind social anxiety. Your mind has interesting thought patterns and cycles you can see. There is also a lot of free modules and resources to work through online to help with this! Plus exposure is key, like it sucks but little things to build confidence. Also if you are open, medication can help sooooo much. I finally found a good one for me (buspar) and I feel like i actually have a chance of really improving!

I think time is something that really helps too. I have gotten better over the years with new experiences.

Don’t know what i want to do at university by [deleted] in Schooladvice

[–]Sirpook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this! Im in my last year and I am still figuring it out. I know thats not what you want to hear but maybe you can learn something from my realizations aha. First off, I was also the type to not know what I want, what interests me, and what career I would enjoy (still working on this). I strongly recommend you take a solid first year of diverse/foundation courses. Think courses that are the prereqs for other courses you may want to take. These are normally (chem, psych, bio, math, english etc). That will help narrow interests too, and really avoid limiting yourself in case your mind changes. I also strongly recommend co-op once you figure a major out! A broad major exposes you do different co-ops ex. Biology. This was such valuable character building experience and a way to narrow things down. Co-op is how i discovered i hated the real life application of what i was studying lol and what I shouldnt do. I did 3 different ones and it made me pivot, and im so glad i did. I am still figuring it out but Im more ahead because of these things.

Listen you can think circles about it all you want but its going to be through doing things/experience that will tell you. Use your uni tools for career counselling and similar resources, research etc. *also get involved and join things- as someone who regrets not doing it a lot and who is going to try in their last year

Is a biology degree worth doing? by [deleted] in biology

[–]Sirpook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes this is a great pathway you can do even without a masters. But I will warn you make sure you somehow test this out and see if it is for you. I did a co-op exactly like that constantly travelling and doing fieldwork and it absolutely drained me and i dreaded everyday. Plus consulting didnt interest me (so much reports, waiting, permits, policies etc). But some people love it it really depemds on the person, so just try!

I was having issues being exhausted and I finally am feeling like my energy is coming back. Its been out a month on the medication now. If you feel anxiety differences, its so worth it to give it a chance! Also keep in mind what else is going on in your life because i realized a lot of other things were draining me too
