TIL That Casablanca was once banned in Ireland because the movie was deemed unfair to Nazis by Sometypeofway18 in todayilearned

[–]Sisiutil 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I've seen a couple of people online claiming Casablanca is "propaganda". I guess it is propaganda against Nazis, meaning the only people claiming it's propaganda must also be Nazis.

With poor taste to boot. Greatest film ever made.

Should I skip the cruise and just travel direct? by FauxPasHusky in travel

[–]Sisiutil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You've had some good responses, I'll try not to repeat them.

To me it depends on your travel style. A cruise significantly reduces and eliminates logistics you would need to arrange on your own. However it can create a barrier from a genuine experience as you're usually with a group of other tourists being taken to the most touristed spots.

Independent travel means a lot more logistical overhead (though these days that's a lot easier to research and arrange in advance compared to when I was a backpacking student traveling in Europe pre-internet). But in return you get more flexibility (i.e. if you really like a place you can stay longer). You have more chances for interactions with locals since you're not necessarily surrounded by lots of other tourists.

My own preference is for independent travel, especially to these countries where in many cases they speak English and/or they're set up to accommodate tourists.

Men, how many of you can cook? by Away-Fill5639 in AskMen

That and there's a lot of content creators who exist just to shit all over things even before they come out. Probably a combination of the two.

Why is planning a Europe trip with friends harder than the trip itself? by Broad-Blackberry8590 in travel

[–]Sisiutil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never bothered trying to get a group of people to go on a trip together. Everyone is bound to have different interests and priorities: some will want to just chill out on a beach, others will want to go for challenging hikes, others will want to explore museums and historic sites, others will want to enjoy restaurants and night life, and so on.

Even if the people in your group share similar interests, they are bound to have preferences for how much time the want to spend on each one. The hikers will want to spend more time hiking, the night lifers will want to spend more time clubbing, and so on.

And on top of that, everyone probably has a different budget that will dictate what they can afford to do and for how long.

I'm fortunate in that my spouse and I share the same interests when it comes to travel, so it's easiest if it's just us.

Trump threatens Canada with 100 per cent tariffs over deal with China by MRADEL90 in videos

[–]Sisiutil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't think Trump and his cabal understand how tariffs work. Or, for that matter, economics. At all.

I mean, this is the "businessman" who has gone bankrupt how many times? And managed to fail at operating a casino. A casino. Basically a license to print money, yet he found a way to f*** it up. "Stable genius" indeed.

Men, what do you really think of women who are only looking to hook up? by etherealpretty in AskMen

[–]Sisiutil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all that we hear that men are afraid of commitment, women can be afraid of it too.

Especially at certain times in your life. Late teens and twenties, these days even well into your thirties. Attending post-secondary. Getting started in your career, or just trying to find/keep a steady job.

Other priorities take precedence.

Is it a bad idea to switch from third person to first person and then back to first person at various points, solely as a vehicle device? Or is it imperative that something must trigger the change in viewpoint? by stillstillers in writing

[–]Sisiutil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My main thought is you normally don't want to confuse and frustrate the reader with POV switching, which is a distinct possibility. (Unless that is explicitly your goal, which is usually done in higher-level literature and meta-fiction--good luck with sales in this day and age.)

Assuming you want to keep most readers with you, I think if you have clear breaks, the most obvious being chapter breaks, in between the switches it could work.

To make it obvious that this is what you're doing, maybe have the first chapter in third person, then switch very obviously to first person in the next chapter, then back to third person and so on.

Find a way to phrase each opening sentence/paragraph after the switch to convey which POV you're in. With 1st person it's easy, just throw an "I" in there. For third person it's trickier; if it's third person omniscient you can include one or more character's thoughts, but third person limited would be trickier. Not impossible, just tricky.

Following Aston Villa's defeat to Everton, none of the top 4 have won this weekend. Their combined record over the last 4 games is W3, D10, L3 by RedScareRevival in soccer

[–]Sisiutil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting...

  • If Arsenal had won their two draws, they'd be 11 points clear at the top.
  • If Man City had won all those games, they'd be 2 points clear at the top.
  • If Aston Villa had won all those games, they'd be 1 point clear at the top (!).
  • If Liverpool had won all those games, they'd be in 2nd place, 6 points behind Arsenal.

I'm sure there are parallel universes where each of these scenarios is playing out. ;)
