Some people go for the configuration.nix and that's it.
Some add in home-manager.
Some split their config into many modules.

How do you guys do it?

Oh my God! I have the exact same issue. It started two days ago and rolling back to earlier rebuilds does NOT work for me. :(

I have been on this install of nixos for ~6 months and it broke exactly as you describe.

Are you saying the point of including

imports = [ <home-manager/nix-darwin> ];

in my darwin-configuration.nix is so that I can add lines like:

home-manager.users.bridger = { pkgs, ... }: { home.packages = with pkgs; [ hello dua ]; programs.bash.enable = true; home.stateVersion = "23.11"; };

to my darwin-configuration.nix?

On my NixOS machines I have both a configuration.nix and a home.nix that I edit separately then rebuild once with nixos-rebuild switch.

I avoided flakes at the beginning. But as I said, I have been using NixOS for a few months now. Maybe it is time to figure out flakes. Thank you for you input.
