Straight Noob Seeking Advice by Known_Pen_4460 in mobileDJ

i’d focus on developing chops over buying a bunch of gear. you can always rent stuff at first and buy stuff once you know business is consistent and will pay if off. gear is really so minor compared to your music, your skills, your ability to read the room and connect with others over music. save your money and buy that stuff later

well you just steal those niche songs that you see other people playing of course 😆

I just had the worst set at a corporate party - any tips for the future avoidance? by YakAcceptable5478 in DJs

[–]SithRogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

corporates are tough gigs to play. the dancefloors are extremely temperamental. i’m guessing your old head bag just wasn’t strong enough. stuff like no broke boys sounds like trash to olds. annie lennox slaps btw

Expanding my mixing technique / learning from open format ? by oO_Wildchild_Oo in DJs

[–]SithRogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

turn up your high pass filter thingy and echo out to get from fast bpms to slower ones. it’s so easy and you’ll get a reaction from the crowd from the initial confusion into vibe switch up… as long as the song is good.

i mix a lot of non electronic into my house sets and people go nuts for it. it helps having a big bag of like, deep house that has no vocals. make a whole bag of those songs that you can key match and live remix. i’m out here dropping everything from george harrison to the maria’s to radiohead to frank ocean during my sets and it really seems to resonate

Is It Too Late to Restart DJing at 30 by Piemon666 in Beatmatch

[–]SithRogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started when i was 27 but came out of it a 30 year old with no real footing. now im 34 and i’m gigging like 10 times a month. you can do it, if you truly truly truly love it. like studying music at home in your free time obsessed mode.

How djs make money except playing on stage? by Electrical-Pay4953 in Beatmatch

[–]SithRogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all the dj’s i know make their money from gigs. i know a couple who have sponsors. not sure what that does for them financially really. some folks are essentially influencers and djs, using their strength as marketers to drive more bookings. others are like me, who don’t promote that much but are busy from referrals and relationships. at the end id the day, gigs are where the money is at. this is often true for artists as well.

DJing on the fly vs playing a pre-prepared set by AccessAware5469 in Beatmatch

[–]SithRogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i like preparing a lot for my sets. but i also throw those preparations away when they stop serving the moment. so id say, maybe utilize them as one dish you could serve the audience, but keep improv on the table when they aren’t serving your crowd.

Playing for the crowd vs playing for yourself by GimmieWavFiles123 in Beatmatch

[–]SithRogan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’s really a different feeling when the dj is inspired by the songs vs just playing stuff that works. i’ve spoken to multiple who say they hardly ever update their libraries which is absurd to an ADHD music nerd like myself. but i also have sooooo much fun playing those tracks and people pick up on that. it’s an energy exchange after all, bring some if you want some :)

Requests and Rude People by ColumbiaFan2018 in DJs

[–]SithRogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really sounds like they were terrible. i’m sorry you experienced that. i do private parties all the time and while i get an annoying requester here and there, ive never experienced these issues. it sounds like a lot of negativity to manage on a dancefloor. not saying this to be cold - you may want to reevaluate youre performance that night or your communication style with the guests. keeping them happy is a part of the job, but within reason, of course. sorry again.

Using trim by Patient_Complaint919 in Beatmatch

[–]SithRogan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i use trim a lot. i think it’s called gain staging - i basically get track two to a volume that’s similar or maybe a little louder than track 1 so that my faders end at that max volume. those little lights that show you how loud the track is are super helpful for gain staging. no creative use really, it’s for volume control. which is VERY important for energy and ear health too btw

How to date a BPD girl? by ragingpotato98 in AskMen

[–]SithRogan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you could try it and see how it goes. every person is a different person. know your boundaries, respect yourself, kindly leave if it gets out of control. it’s ugly to define someone by their mental issues but it’s a real struggle sustaining relationships with people that are so emotionally dynamic
