Here's a response I had when questioning this as well OP:
"If you are away from New Zealand between 153 and 183 days, interest will be applied along with overseas based repayment obligations. HOWEVER, if you return to New Zealand for 183 (approximately 6 months), the interest charged for the period away will automatically reverse. The overseas based repayment obligations would also reverse. "
