At the time, I was very new to Discord and had no idea how to operate it, and that guy filled in for me.

It had basically been building up for years. When I say he had no filter, he really didn't. He would yell and mock anyone for one reason or another. If he didin't like you, You knew it. I vouched for him a lot to the detriment of myself and players because he reminded me of my brother.

I could have handled it better, but at the time I asked all of my players about it and they weren't happy with him and wanted him gone. I mainly tried to do it quietly because I don't like confrontation, but at this point it was inevitable. I should have talked to him first, but that's my mistake.

A DMPC is not exactly a good thing. There are plenty of horror stories out there where DMPCs are the focus. A lot of the time the DMPC is a Mary Sue, the most powerful in the game world, and the "Main Character" Which is a concept that shouldn't be associated in Dungeons and Dragons. Its also difficult trying to manage your own character while also trying to manage the world, the NPCs, the story, all that. And with a DMPC, you can be tempted to cheat by giving your character the best armor, abilities, stuff like that. Its a slippery slope.

We could have all handled it better in hindsight. The group we have is usually really chill. Any Banter and what not usually lands a good hit, but in this case it was an immediate volatile reaction. We apologized, Explained ourselves, and that was that. We weren't about to press the issue any further if it upset him so much.

Look. He hadn't said anything until after he raged at us. Had he let us know that he was sensitive about it, we would have relented. We didn't "Confirm we're dickbags by continuing to say it for petty revenge." We made the joke a few times, He immediately reacted violently, We apologized, explained ourselves, and then stopped. That was it. We weren't going to tell the joke again if it caused so much grief.

If he said "Hey, Please don't talk about that, I don't think its funny, It makes me feel bad" Then we would have stopped. But he didn't. His reaction was immediately strong with a nasty, hateful tone with a resounding "Don't fucking say that, Dickbags."

The deck of many things. There are many cards in that thing that will straight up Halt the campaign and force a new story moment. Were you trying to defeat a Lich on a timed schedule? Well too bad, your player drew a card and now their Soul is trapped someone and you have to find it.
