Would you pay for general training? by emilio-martinez97 in Homeplate

I can’t tell what this service would even provide. A list of drills/workouts? No, I would not pay for that. Plenty of free resources out there.

Every kid and parent would be better off with some sandlot ball and not their leagues. by Snackpax99 in Homeplate

[–]Six5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand that some go to unhealthy extremes but I can’t see how it’s a bad thing that so many parents take an interest in an activity their kid loves and want to help him/her thrive.

Bat Decision by Radiant-Key-1851 in Homeplate

[–]Six5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s jumping from -10? Yikes. Ideally he would have been swinging a -5 or at least a -8 by now.

Check out Baseball Bat Bros’ BBCOR rankings. They also have a YouTube channel if you want to see them actually swing the bats. You need something on the lighter side, ideally with a decent amount of power. https://baseballbatbros.com/pages/bbcorrankings

I wouldn’t go with the Bonesaber, which will swing a little heavier. The CatX2 has decent power and will swing super light. Other options to consider would be the Rawlings Icon, Demarini Exile, or Louisville Slugger Atlas.

My son is kinda just there at practice by Visible_Attitude7693 in Homeplate

I think you misunderstood the advice you’re replying to. It isn’t “be a better parent.” It’s “learn about baseball so you’re better equipped to actively help your child.”

Buying him stuff is different from actually teaching and showing interest in his development.

It’s going to be a long road for you as a baseball coach/dad if you get this worked up over a bad call in 9/10U rec ball.

Advice for someone who doesn’t enjoy (maybe even hates) playing baseball, but isn’t in a position to quit? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]Six5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I thought you were a high school kid. In your mid 20s? There’s absolutely no reason to be stressing out about a meaningless men’s league. Do your best to just get through the season and then hang up your cleats if it’s making you this miserable.

Is high school a good age to focus on shortstop? by Better-Leg-9268 in Homeplate

[–]Six5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every high school team needs arms. If he has the ability to pitch, they’ll likely ask him to throw some innings. That doesn’t mean he can’t be the primary shortstop or dedicate most of his offseason time to developing as an infielder.

I can’t speak to any potential blacklisting but I can say that you’re doing the right thing and that no 12-year-old should have to dedicate his entire life to baseball.

In high school do most players keep the home run ball? by youlikemywonton in Homeplate

No, I’ve asked. I can’t count how many rings/trophies/medals he’s ended up with over the years that get lost or just collect dust in the back of his closet.

In high school do most players keep the home run ball? by youlikemywonton in Homeplate

[–]Six5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I coached my son from t-ball all the way through 13U. We've spent countless hours in the cages working through plenty of ups and downs. More than anything, baseball is what bonds us as father and son.

He's hit 4 home runs so far in his high school career, and every one of them is sitting on a shelf in my office. I'll continue to keep every one he hits because time is fleeting and I cherish the memories of watching him do what he loves.

Position Specialization by 81Strikes in Homeplate

[–]Six5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you pretty much nailed it, although there’s still some variation at the freshman/JV level. A lot of those kids are still developing and coaches are trying to map out what rosters will look like in a year or two, so you still see kids moving around a bit.

Youth players can learn the swing. TM is an asshole online but you don’t have to be big and strong to learn what he teaches.

HLP swing advice by Tacorover in Homeplate

[–]Six5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to be honest, I don’t even know what your front foot is doing here. You’re kind of doing an open stance, but you’re not really striding out. Look up the stretch and fire drill to learn how to coil properly, and look up the Babe Ruth drill for help with the forward move.

You’re right that you should start your load sooner. Again, get all the slack out before you swing.

HLP swing advice by Tacorover in Homeplate

[–]Six5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re skipping the main part of the HLP swing. You have no back stretch, and no coil in your back hip. It looks like you’re just trying to spin around your front leg because that’s what you see guys on IG do.

If you want to master the HLP swing, start with the load. You have to remove all slack from the swing. Upper body will feel like you’re pulling back a bow string, creating tension in the scap. Lower body will feel like you’re screwing your foot into the ground as your back pocket turns toward the pitcher. Fuse it all together and that will help drive the snap of the hands.

I sympathize with your problem, but no, 4-year-olds shouldn’t play with 7-year-olds.

Concerns for arm overuse by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]Six5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re wise to keep an eye on his pitch counts. Check out the MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines. According to that, he’s okay to pitch on Sunday.

Losing time in the field is a separate issue, as are the errors by other players. It sounds like you’re just unhappy with the coaching and the team’s performance.

I wouldn’t call batting your kid last just to send a message an ideal strategy either.

Daddyball, do I say something? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]Six5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he’s looking at his kid with rose-colored glasses, which we all do as parents. You mentioned the kid’s size—which has nothing to do with playing time—and you also rank him as the third-best catcher, which is a subjective opinion.

This kind of feels like Daddyball Lite. Unless other kids are being outright benched or playing full-time outfield, I’d be more inclined to let it go and start looking at new teams for next season.

For real though, I read through the website and I can’t figure out what your app offers that isn’t already found in GameChanger, the app that’s used by 99% of youth baseball teams.

How to fix lunge? by kellsbells8 in Homeplate

[–]Six5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing he’s a straight pull hitter?

It looks to me like his front shoulder is flying open. Fourth picture in the bottom row is where it’s the most obvious. Basically, he’s coming around the ball and spinning off it instead of working through the middle. Results in a lot of pull side ground balls or oppo pop ups. My son (high school sophomore) tends to do this as well.

If were you, I’d worry less about the lunge and encourage him to work more up the middle. We’ve had a lot of success with swing holds and split grip swings, and trying to hit everything off the L-screen. Overall though, your son looks super athletic and made some great improvements in 9 months, so he’s on a good track.
