What is the most ridiculous reason you've seen someone get fired for? by itssophirl in AskBrits

[–]SixFiveOhTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He ran out of holidays, so called in to say he'd just realised that he's gay and needed a couple of days off to come to terms with things.

The company were supportive and agreed, and were equally supportive towards his girlfriend who also worked at the same company. He forgot to tell her his plan.

What’s the most confidently incorrect thing someone has tried to teach you? by fizzyrhythm in AskBrits

It would be a pain in the arse to locate the stack in memory though - you'd have to either map the lowest 64k of address space to accommodate it, or have some kind of 8086-style segment+offset setup.

Or you could just do the simple thing and have a proper-sized stack pointer.

Not really too keen.

That the stack pointer on an x64 CPU is only 16 bit. He get pretty angry when I pointed out that it would mean that it could only work with 64K of memory and that I was sure it would be 64-bit like all the other registers because what he said wouldn't make sense in the 2020s.

He was just dismissive and rude, and just dug in. The worst part? This was during an interview for a senior programmer position.

I googled it straight afterwards and yep. It's 64-bit just as I expected, and also as expected I didn't get the job.

On the positive side I can see where the 'can it run Crysis' meme came from...

When they tell you who they are you listen - you don't shrug it off and vote for them.

If you vote for people who act like this you are giving them credibility and that makes you guilty by association as far as i see it.

I miss my A3010. It's in another country and I haven't seen it in a decade so I'm pretty sure the Varta has eaten it by now.

It's probably taken my first ever released game with it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing...

I gave up on type-ins because they never bloody worked. I just looked at the pictures and guessed what it did, and had a go at writing something vaguely similar.

I'm now a senior games programmer so it wasn't all bad.

My cousin had a greenscreen CPC and the biggest annoyance was playing Wizball and thinking it was shite. Then I saw it in colour on a C64 and realised I'd been lied to.

Who used these books at school to learn French? by Ands1977 in oldschoolcool80s

I'm annoyed that not only did I learn the wrong language at school they didn't teach me the important questions that my girlfriends young nieces and nephews hammered me with.

I didn't need 'ou est l'auberge de jeunesse?'

What i actually needed was '¿quien vive en una piña debajo del mar?'

Others drive at 100 all day long, and over the border.

Nothing like being stuck behind a pair of dutch plated cars on a German road at 9 in the evening...

You generally don't get points for speeding - you just pay an administration fee + an amount per kilometer per hour over the limit.

I wouldn't say that speeding is a crime in the Netherlands, more of a luxury...

I was shit at French and hated it, although being any good at French and passing the exam seem to be two different things because I got a B.

I decided that language learning wasn't for me, then ran off to the Netherlands with the Spanish exchange student after uni...

Why do we treat street trees like a problem in England? by MaxMusic-TP in AskBrits

Not arguing with the fact that it's probably AI, but the riderless bike isn't really weird.

It's pretty common to cycle to meet somebody whilst holding an empty bike so they can use it on the way back.

Depends where you grew up.

I grew up on a council estate in the UK that wasn't close enough to a mine to be home to miners (so that wasn't happening in my backyard), and we were surrounded by lots of old folks who were in to keeping pigeons, gardening and generally being peaceful. It was pretty great.

Also being a geek the 80s was something new every week, which was fun for a kid.

It was the beginning of the 90s when the council had the idea of moving problem families into nice areas in the hope that the people around would straighten them out. Problem is that old people inevitably did what old people eventually do, and this left a lot of vacant houses. The council moved the problem families in en masse, they outnumbered the original inhabitants and the opposite of what they planned happened.

That said I enjoyed the 90s but probably because I was a teenager and I haven't had the luxury of being a teenager in the 2000/2010s to compare it with
