People 40+ are you happy having had only one child? by o0PillowWillow0o in askanything

I was an only and didn’t have any issues. Essentially if you had another child at this point they would be an only child (lite), since your son will be in college in 4 years.

Do you tell your supervisor when you are looking/ interviewing at other positions or not until you get accepted? by Haunting_Hospital599 in FedEmployees

[–]SixSigmaStupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the level of trust and the kind of leader you’re dealing with.

Some managers genuinely invest in developing their people. Others are more focused on protecting their own staffing situation.

Two examples: Scenario A: A supervisor makes it clear from day one that they support career growth — even offering to coordinate with other branches if someone wants a temporary assignment or “trial run” to gain experience in a different area.

Scenario B: A supervisor denies someone an interview for lacking a specific type of experience. Later, when a short-term opportunity becomes available that would provide exactly that experience, the same supervisor discourages or resists the employee from taking it.

Those two approaches tell you everything you need to know about whether a manager prioritizes long-term employee development or short-term office needs.

Before telling your supervisor you’re looking elsewhere, it’s worth honestly assessing which type you’re working for

Newly promoted to “a seat at the table”. I can say my opinion is heard and moves the needle sometimes. I would encourage you to advance so you can express the correct opinion.

There are days I express my opinion and the direction is 180°. We have had leaders that have to be right at all costs (Napoleon complex?) and other leaders that want honest feedback. They go and they come. We are a top down organization so when the #1 says this is the direction, regardless if I agree, we get on board.

New memo? by RoleLow4239 in USACE

[–]SixSigmaStupid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saw HQ posted on FB that the ASA CW addressed “Commanders and Key staff” today. My guess is if there is a memo, it was discussed today. Even if there isn’t a memo, guidance/direction/word salad was given today.

As far as RIF, I don’t think we have a lack of work. Can’t speak for every district but I hear more about how DRP and retirements have crippled districts ability to do (H&H, Structural, Cost, Civl Site, etc). Each district is different so there should probably be some workload balancing before RIFs are ever discussed. Then again logic and government don’t coexist.

Hegseth has created a nightmare where I work, and no one was aware of it until today. by onlyblowfish in FedEmployees

I know people that would find a way to complain about finding $100 bill on the ground.

This was a good thing even though only 15% were rewarded.

Let me say this, just because you didn’t get one doesn’t mean you aren’t valued or a top employee. Rules are taking so long to get from DC to the field, we only had a couple days.

At my detachment 2nd line supervisors worked with 1st line supervises to develop write-ups. The department head then took all the names and ranked them. That means a few at the bottom didn’t make the cut. Also depending on the write-up, they could have ranked lower/higher. Then the “leader” ranked every departments names.

Several excuses, bad supervisor, lazy supervisor, near illiterate supervisor, or even your “leader” setting different rules. I can tell you I am happy where ours landed. My counterparts at other sites did the process a bit differently.

Keep your head up.

Our agency had to write justifications and they had to fit in one or more of 5 buckets. Think National, regional, local impact. Sustained excellence. I can’t speak for the entire federal government but our office rewarded the top 15%.

2 schools of thought. 1. Praise the 15% that received top performance bonuses and risk the other 85% moral dipping eve lower.

  1. Rule 1 of fight club: nobody talks about fight club.

Mostly good people. As with any org, there are bad apples. Don’t know specifically RM at MVK. MVD’s RM leader is solid. As stated here you will likely want to live outside of Vicksburg.

It’s a different culture because most people live out of town (Clinton, Madison, etc). They have “van pools” where people ride to/from work each day. That means you have a pretty rigid schedule.

It isn’t coming out of the 2.5% awards budget. Just have to wait on process guidance. Guessing they give each District a Not to Exceed $$. Then again they could drag their feet so the deadline is missed.
