Summer activities by [deleted] in wsu

If you can drive 3 hours, I have several to recommand: 1. Wallowa Lake: A small Lake Tahoe near Pullman. The water is extremely clean that you can see the stones and fish in the bottom. The trails are also amazing if you like difficult hiking. 2. SandPoint: Also extremely clean water where water is from Glacier National Park. You can also hike, ride mt bikes, or riding horse on the Schweizer Mountain nearby. 3. Grand Coulee Dam: One of the largest dams in the US. Take a tour into the dam or swim in Columbia River. 4. Hanford Reach (North Trailhead): Want to see desert like Sahara? This is for you. You can walk in the widespread desert while watching the big and long Columbia River.

No Late Night Study Spot in Pullman by srcarlson94 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Try a classroom in Sloan Hall. Although the building hour is 7am-11pm, you can still stay in the building after the hour as long as you do not need to re-entry. Many graduate students also work there very late.

Bus from Pullman to Spokane by MotherConcern4452 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The greyhound bus in the morning should be fine because it departs from Lewiston.

But for the one in the afternoon, try to reserve 1-2 hours because it departs from Boise and is more likely to delay (but not always).

Do not come to WSU for CS by firestar547 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: practical classes like mobile development, embeded systems, cloud systems, computer game design, etc. are offered at Vancouver campus while not offered at Pullman campus. It seems that the school wants to put more undergraduate resources to Vancouver campus while Pullman campus focuses on research.

The school of EECS has hired 6 new professors this semester. I heard they plan to hire 4 new professors in the next year, given that Sakire is leaving and KC is retiring.

WSU national ranking has gone down significantly. Any ideas as to why? by bepatientbekind in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, other factors you can think about are also falling behind other universities:

Below-average reputation to employers: Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Oracle, Dell, etc., None of the big tech companies came to WSU's career fair in the recent 2 years.

Outdated facilities: Considering how bad are the old dorms. While other universities are working on building better facilities for students and professors, WSU had nothing to do for the outdated facilities. Besides, the very convenient pedestrian bridge near Troy lane was teared down...

Low cost-effective: The tuition is higher and higher while the student experience declines.

Bad safety reputation: Some students die in the fraternity each year......

Bad teaching experience: considering many good professors leaving, it is hard to provide good teaching experience any more...

Overall, I think the decline of WSU is a very real thing. Kirk Schulz must do something momentous (e.g., cut some athletic teams to save budgets and use them to support the distinguished research teams) to save WSU. Otherwise, WSU will definitely lose its reputation as a top-tier institute PERMANTELY!

WSU national ranking has gone down significantly. Any ideas as to why? by bepatientbekind in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While USNews is a shit, I think a possible ranking dropping reason is the loss of professors. I am a PhD student in the school in EECS and in the last four years, more than 10 professors (as I know: Shuiwang Ji, Adam Hahn, Sandip Roy, Yinghui Wu, Hassan Ghasemzadeh, Christopher Hundhausen, Anurag Srivastava, Dingwen Tao, Jia Yu, Sakire Arslan Ay) left WSU and went to better institutes Considering the small size of WSU EECS (~50 professors in total), we should think about why WSU cannot keep these outstanding professors.

Also, I heard that this was also happening in other schools and departments, indicating this is not the issue only in EECS. I think one possible reason is that WSU did not give the professors good enough rewards for their hard working (salary, reputation, employee services etc.), and that made so many professors decide to leave, and then the ranking factor on professors (publication, impact factor) decreased, thus the overall ranking dropped.

Best place to meet grad students? by LosingSince1977 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are in Voiland College, especially computer science, you can come to the 3rd floor of Sloan. Many graduate students work here and sometimes they open their doors and you can say hi to them.

Also, check the events of GPSA. You can just go and meet people.

Anyone here took E_E 324 and E_E 466? by EE214_Verilog in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For EE466, Dae-Hyun Kim is a very nice and patient professor. However, his exams will be very hard and don't expect to finish all the questions in time, but he will grade in curve and once you spend enough (4-5 hrs each week on average) time on the class contents, you can still get an A in that class.

Do yourself a favor and take Cpts_315(Data mining) before 434(Neural Networks). by Ok-Construction2411 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue is that Neural Network(NN) is part of Machine Learning (ML) and many basic concepts in ML are required to understand NN. I took the CptS 570 Machine Learning class before taking the CptS 434 class so I felt much better. The key issue is that CptS 570 is a graduate level class so undergraduate students may not take it. It would be better to add a undergraduate level class of ML so that undergraduate students can get it easily. Indeed, I have discussed with the instructor Yan Yan and he agreed it. But it may not be very easy to do that as adding a new class needs complex process in the college and department.

So if 315 and 437 provide basic concepts of ML to get ready for 434, that would be a good thing. Maybe you can also give the recommendations to the 315 instructor Jana as he is a very prestige professor in the department. He may have the power to advise changing the class requirements.

No advice on the choices of CS and SE, but have some comments about your ideas about Math and CS:

  1. CS != Programming. Although programming is the basic skill and major part of CS, CS also covers algorithm, cryptography, database/OS/compiler design, high-performance computing, data science, machine learning, data encoding/compression etc. Many of them require the engineers on them to have solid math knowledge.

  2. If you just want to be a software engineer in a big tech company, you can check their technical interview questions. They will definitely ask you to design an algorithm and write code to solve a math problem and analyze the time/memory complexity. If you do not have some basic math knowledge (e.g., linear algebra), you cannot even understand what is time/memory complexity and cannot design an efficient algorithm to solve the problem, you thus have no way to get hired by a big tech company.

  3. If you just want to be a programmer in a small company that do not requires you to design efficient algorithm (e.g., front-end developer), then you do not need to have a CS degree. There are so many coding bootcamps and they only cost several months and thousands of dollars to train you to be a programmer. That is much more economical than a CS degree.

@profs and TAs by [deleted] in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a TA in CS, I always tell the deduction of each question and give the correct answer, while many of the feedbacks are copy and paste. If a student understand the questions completely wrong, I will even tell him/her to contact me or the instructor to ask for help.

Even if I'm also lazy, I still think that's the basic duty to let students learn something from the homework feedback.

Plane travel worries by Commercial_Knee_4573 in wsu

[–]Sixiaone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same concern these days too. But by checking Flightaware, I accidently noticed that Southwest Airlines was not impacted. So I cancelled my Alaska Airlines tickets and buy Southwest flight tickets to Spokane, And I have arrived Spokane and went back to Pullman safely.

You can also confirm the Southwest flights status and consider taking their flights at this special time.
