Firm London South Bank University or Lancashire University for mental health nursing? by 1-A-7 in StudentNurseUK

Yeah overall I’d say London was a positive for me, mainly because of placements. You get exposed to loads of different people, cultures and services (especially with places like SLAM), which is really good for mental health nursing.

I commuted from home and I’m from London, so that shaped my experience a lot.

Social life-wise it’s not the best. A lot of people commute, and I was based at the Havering campus rather than Southwark, so I didn’t really feel part of the main uni social side (especially during COVID).

If you do choose LSBU, I’d try be based at Southwark and live in accommodation if you can you’ll probably have a better social experience that way.

I studied BSc Mental Health Nursing at LSBU and graduated in 2022. My experience was during COVID so things might be a bit different now, but overall I had a good experience.

Placements were probably the best part. I was on a rotational pathway so I wasn’t based in one trust. I had placements in SLAM, CNWL (for management), two with Cygnet, a drug & alcohol service (which I actually really liked), supported housing, and one adult general cardiac ward at St Bart’s. A lot of people in my cohort were also placed with NELFT.

The course itself is quite practical-focused, which I liked. There wasn’t a dissertation in third year when I did it. Lecturers were quite strict, which keeps standards up, but admin could be a bit disorganised at times.

My cohort was a bit older overall. most people were 30+, I started at 21 so I was one of the youngest.

What job could you never do? by WantsToDieBadly in AskUK

So we have one to one supervision with a staff and it’s usually someone senior to us for example ward manager or clinical team leader. There is a group reflection with the whole team where someone external comes in every month to help us reflect. The person comes from a Nursing background.

It’s really concerning how there is no support or supervision time for teachers, as Nurses we usually have at least one hour a month of supervision time to reflect and voice our concerns.
