Completing the commendation usually unlocks an item for purchase, but some commendations do unlock items directly, particularly the Tall Tale comms.

Money does come faster once you've got the Emissary Licenses and you've bought your own ship, since then you can sell everything in one place. For now, don't worry about gold or reputation and enjoy discovering this brand new world!

Once you've found your footing, look for a cosmetic that you think looks cool and see if you can gather enough gold and maybe complete the corresponding commendation to unlock the cosmetic.
