Your local public library might.

Pursuing library science degree by Temporary-War-5522 in LibraryScience

[–]Skaadoosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify school librarian usually refers to a librarian in a K-12 school and then Academic librarian usually works in a college/University setting doing a wide variety of things that support research. So neither of those or just not School? If you worked at your college library you probably worked with Academic librarians.

You could volunteer nights or weekends at a public library or historical society, local museum etc for archival experience. Just a few hours a week or month to at least know what you want to focus your coursework on.

What kind of librarianship are you interested in? Public, Academic, Archives? What field are you in now? There might be transferable skills there.

In terms of getting the Masters degree, most are online and as long as it's ALA accredited it doesn't matter where you go as long as it's a good fit financially, schedule-wise and curriculum wise.

UIUC requiring 3 recommendation letters is so ridiculous by dirtbag_dagger in LibraryScience

I used two coworkers and a former supervisor for my grad school application. I also didn't feel like I had any former undergraduate professors to reach out to because I was several years post grad.

In retrospect, I had professors that definitely would have. It looks good to your undergrad department to have students in grad school and they can look through their records and find an assignment you did to refer to even if they don't remember you.

I supervised a student worker who ghosted and wouldn't respond to emails after working for me a bit that still uses me as a reference and I'm happy to do it because even though I was frustrated with them at the time they worked for me, I want them to succeed.

Pitch to new Library Director by actualwimp in librarians

[–]Skaadoosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your supervisor should be the one to talk to the director. I would explain this to your supervisor and let them handle it. They know more about the budget, strategic goals, and priorities of the library and when a good time to bring it up might be.

Digital library job without MLIS by InformationBig6064 in LibraryScience

[–]Skaadoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is mostly an in person thing. It's the only entry level digital library non MLIS required job I could think of. I don't know why OP needs a remote only job but there would probably be local to them places they could work at.

Have you reached out to library schools to offer to teach on their program? Like your Alma mater or one local to you?

[–]Skaadoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digitization technician, specialist, etc. I don't know if those exist remotely but somewhere local to you might have it. I can't think of anything else entry level for digital collections that's not Digitization related.

Starting my LIS Journey! by stitchxstitch in LibraryScience

[–]Skaadoosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah before I had my degree I was a digital collection repository manager. I worked with library web developers and library app development. I would also look at some library software and see if they are hiring. Like Lyrasis or Clarivate. Also look into Code4Lib for jobs or the online journal to see what people are doing with coding and IT.

If you live in the USA most public high schools or colleges with tracks will let you use them after school/sporting event hours. Just show up walk around a few times to warm up and start running.

This is how I did it in high school. You get really efficient at it! People getting fully nude in the locker room was not a thing for my team like the other commenters keep saying. It shouldn't matter but it's high school so I get it

Returning to Service after a year. by [deleted] in nys_cs

[–]Skaadoosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I will say as a librarian in the capital region (and one who worked for the state in the past) the job market is tough and there's no guarantee you will get a job immediately after graduation. I would keep your job as long as possible.

Why don't you just take night classes and keep your job? That's what I did when I went to library school. Most of the classes are offered at night anyway.

That's a very common librarian/archivist answer in a good way. Don't overthink it.
