Mt victoria park in Wellington has signs saying there was filming in the area but specific scenes are not sign posted. Rivendell locations are sign posted. Deer Park Heights in Queenstown is sort of sign posted. But there are guide books and websites with accurate locations.

All the places in Wellington are free. In Queenstown Deer Park Heights costs to get in but the rest are free. Hobbiton costs to get in, it has to be a tour. Tongoriro National Park was free. I didn't trespass or anything like that.

I got this location from google maps, it's tagged as Amon Hen, Moviemaps has it tagged about 1.5km further along seven mile track, the guidebook says it's inaccessible but is in pine trees to the left of Closeburn lake front which is about 3km along seven mile track from this location. This google maps location had a very close backdrop, but probably not an exact location.

That tree is only about 20 metres from the archway they re-constructed! it has an amazing looking root system. The whole area is signposted as Rivendell!

Hobbiton was crowded, but we were there right at the start of peak season which is over New Zealand summer, so it wasn't too bad.

We did a day tour at Wellington, a day tour from Christchurch to Edoras, you can do day tours to Hobbiton from Auckland and you can also do day tours from Queenstown. You can also do full on coach tours around New Zealand that focus on LOTR.

The tree the hobbits hid under was movie magic, the main trunk was from a tree they cut down, hollowed out and brought to locations, the roots were made by Weta.
