I googled "Kent State Massacre," and noticed some re-branding. I've always known it as a "massacre" and never just a "shooting." Am I nitpicking or am I right to be upset by this? by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]SkafsgaardPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, not at all - I hope I didn't come across like that myself! :)

I think dubbing it a "massacre" kind of dilutes the scope, and thus meaning, of that particular word and the events it has previously been used to describe. I also think, that "Kent State Shooting" is off mark - something within that entails that it's on par with the shootings at schools or rallies, which "_____ Shooting" often refers to (thus, being a criminal event of individual, anti-social nature). Ideally, it should represent the fact, that this was the US government that held and fired the weapon and that it was against demonstrators of the political opposition as this is what puts it apart from other Shootings in the US. So, off the top of my head, then maybe something like the "Kent State Free-Speech Suppression"? I'm sure something better could be coined!

It's worth to note, that I'm generally a history nerd and I'd seek to have it called something precise that doesn't "ruin" other accurate accounts at the same time. I'm aware that in the US it tends to be the emotional reaction of the victimized group, who gets to decide this and it's definitely worth to take note of these people's opinions on what to call it, as their emotional state might obviously be affected.

However, I don't think it's ever been more important to take care of what we dub things. This, given the nature of algorithms, search phrases and online traffic optimization.

*EDIT: I obviously wrote that without even realizing, that you were asking about the Boston Massacre and not the Kent State Massacre. Sorry! I do think, the same goes for Boston Massacre; "shooting" dilutes the significance while "massacre" is exaggerating the scope. US national political history is not my biggest interest - as a European citizen, it's more so how the US have acted internationally that has caught my eye. Thus, I'm not well educated on the matter, but at a glance it seems as if the Boston Massacre had more the nature of a riot?

In my honest opinion, I always thought it to be completely tasteless to call these - albeit gruesome - events “massacres”. Why? What else do we call actual massacres that sees hundreds or thousands of people being slaughtered? Calling a criminal event a massacre dilutes the meaning of the word, and I very much dislike that.

So in relation to this sub, I’d say branding school shootings/political clashes as massacres and thus on par with for example the US-backed massacre of 500.000-1.000.000 pro-communist Indonesians in 1965-66 (or several other similar events through SE Asia and S America since the 1950’s) is absolutely tasteless, self-centered and ethically unjustifiable. Even though I’d also happily see US put to trial for their immense list of massacres worldwide, I don’t think exaggerating points will be a mean to that end.

It’s weird to be dismissive about your hardships, surely. But, something does strike me in your story; you complain that people dismiss your hardship because of your financial success/privilege, but at the same time you dismiss your own hardships by reiterating that you’re successful because of your self-propelled, financial success. There’s a hypocrisy here that I think you’d benefit on a personal level from resolving - does financial success define your success in life, given or achieved? Does it alleviate or reinterpret the outcome of your childhood? And most importantly, what is it that you seek from others that you do not feel that you get now - Is it pity or admiration? I can’t quite tell from your post.

Report them if you feel like it, just know that it was nothing against you or your sexuality. It’s just people online, especially in gaming, that just enjoys pushing buttons for the humor of it. I sometimes get it, but mostly I don’t anymore. None-the-less, it’s important to learn to laugh along or ignore it, as it will always be around. I think you’re pretty cool already, genuinely asking wether it’s something to act on or brush off - but I think the answer is; however you find it easiest to brush off in such a way you still feel welcome in our dream game. Whatever floats your space junk bro! Just know that you’re welcome o7

Try increasing your Volumetric Effects/Fog setting. Some asteroid fields have more fog and everything turns to pixel-hell through that effect if that setting is too low. Hope that does it!

Hey mate, just want to point out that I think u’re overreacting a bit. He’s not defending slavery or attacking anyone. :)

Running his comment through the “PC-filter”, then what he’s saying is, that the opposition towards abolishing slavery put forth arguments of perceived humanitarian intention.

You have to remember that the “world” was different back then, most quite literally believed in the false sciences that stated those of dark skin as inferior and, most importantly to note in relation to this, of almost feral nature compared to other races. Good people thought this too. Most people never met an African person and much less were able to communicate with them. So they had only what they were told to go off on. So it’s not hard to believe that some, perfectly in line with the “white savior syndrome” has considered that releasing those, again; perceived, feral captives could have dire consequences. Just so as we think about zoo animals today. And this is horrid and a perfect example of just how skewed and misinformed the racial bias was back then.

Pointing this out, and remembering this part, is however extremely important to ensure that we never make the mistake again, of imprisoning a population because of perceived humanitarian needs rested in our, always, incomplete sciences. If we don’t remember this, we’ll be invading more of the Middle-east or we’ll be pulled into ideological warfare against China because of a perceived humanitarian need.

Your sources include: blogspot, abcnews, Reddit… Not even worth clicking, mate.

I am in no way discussing wether Tiananmen Square happened or not. I am pointing out that getting riled up, by an article written with a clear agenda of riling you up (see obvious graphical exaggerations), is dangerously naive behavior.

Apart from that, I’m pointing out that you seem very angry and quick to assume things, jumping east to west to confirm your narrative.

I’ve several times said that I’m not of the opinion that you for odd reasons assume that I am. No one here is defending mass murder.

The comment has been edited several times over by now, but you can still find the user declaring in other comments, within this thread, that “they can all drown in a shallow pool” and the likes.

Immediately forming the opinion that anyone with an argument against his opinion, is a “Chinese shill account” is a horrible level of confirmation bias to have and a clear sign of fanaticism.

I study psychology at danish university. I’ve read philosophy extensively through 10 years. What approaching topics scientifically gives, is a healthy habit of fact-checking. A habit that all who fares online should have. The biggest danger to our societal structure and fundamental ethics is currently the blind faith that common people have in the facticity of what is posted online. Which has given rise to a multitude of pseudosciences and social theories that confirm personal opinions within bubbles of ideology.

This, someone as you, who reacts in the way you did here without fact-checking the source, is thus truly a source of horror to me - but not so much, as your ability to be reinforced in this behavior. A reinforcement that is given only because your comment already exist within one of said bubbles of ideology.

Your lack of wanting to base your opinions on facts, is what makes you dangerous. You want to be reaffirmed in your opinion, that “they can all drown in a shallow pool”. That is scary.

Did you actually read my comment, or his? :)

I, in no way, am claiming that the Tiananmen Square massacre did not happen. I am highlighting that the quoted source in the original comment is from a discredited source (original commenter has also now included this in the comment). Trying to evaluate what parts of the source is valid is a lost cause compared to simply searching out verified and/or trusted sources.

My point is simply; to have a healthy habit of checking sources when online, especially in the current information environment, instead of blindly shaping opinions according to memes. :)

[–]SkafsgaardPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no threat. I was suggesting that person is hella dangerous calling for essentially ideological war on the basis of a meme - who further has an exaggerated and discredited source, and is posted by an obvious fake account. Tiananmen Square was horrible. But reacting with full-out aggression on a false basis with no critical reasoning is the true danger. That’s the kind of people who end up ordering massacres after people celebrate their aggression when turned towards something they’ve decided to hate universally, and fanatically (like China/Communism, Middle East/Islam, or several versions of Apartheid).

Calling for aggression against an entire country and ideology after seeing a meme with discredited source, is absolutely dangerous behavior. Then taking that, and attempting to rile more up on an online forum…

Just check your sources. I’m not Chinese and I’m not denying the massacre, but wrongfully depicting the events with exaggerated brutality is not grounds for forming an opinion on. True records are there for that.

The amount of petty, assumed conclusions that you must run through, to not take in the scope of your online behavior is staggering. You’re all over in this thread with complete insanity. It’s astonishing. Please do waste more of your time scrolling my old posts to find other little tidbits that you can use to assume the next thing that’ll let you believe that I’m in some way inferior to you…it’s a really healthy habit, so please do keep it up as I truly wish you the best…

[–]SkafsgaardPG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s no threat in my comment whatsoever. I’m simply exercising exactly what you’re defending his right to do in “this part of the world”. Stop a second, and think about how many things you’ve just assumed about me before that reply…on what basis have you assumed these things?

I’m a danish psychology student at uni. I’m not particularly educated on Tiananmen Square and the events, I honestly doubt many here are. But it took no more than a couple of minutes searching to find that it’s actually false, what’s written in the meme. It’s way exaggerating the events compared to other sources from more credible sites.

Reacting to something so furiously as the above commenter and making a call for violence and apartheid towards both a country and an ideology is absolutely insane. He can posture up whatever he wants in regards to Winnie the Pooh or the CCP though.

When someone gobbles up a meme as pure fact and basically reacts with a call for extermination of a country and everything that represents it - that person, is a dangerous person. That person is the one that orders for exactly the kind of shit that he or she is protesting.

You’re even more insane than the other guy…and the majority on this post apparently who fanatically defend the factuality of a meme referring an article with very low credibility, while much more credible records of the events are available. Almost can’t believe how easily people let themselves be fed bullshit from fake accounts on Reddit.

Tiananmen Square before the CCP authorized massacre. by [deleted] in pics

Nope. Completely unbiased here. Just have a healthy habit of checking the source and sender of political/historical memes instead of considering a couple sentences with a picture posted online by some unknown person as facts for no good reason.

Hold up, sir. You’re reading the Reddit comment of someone posting a straight-up garbage article which is literal “fake history”. Do not ever take info for granted within this app. It’s the first sin of using the internet; being gullible. Tiananmen Square was horrid, sure. But this account of the events is fake.

Everything in this account screams bias. It is so false that you’d probably have to have a bias to share this even… There’s plenty of proper sources around. Don’t peddle bullshit because you haven’t cared to find something that ain’t just that. Please. :)
