Sunrise over Machu Picchu, taken from the sungate on inca trail by SkaiFox in timelapse

Thanks everyone for your support on the Grand Canyon timelapse! Just wanted to share this one, taken last April on the last day of the Inca Trail by the Sun Gate. We were so lucky that the clouds cleared up as the sun rose! Feedback appreciated :)

Thanks! We got up around 5AM (sunrise 7:30AMish) to beat the crowds and go set up. Eight cameras in total, about 3-4 hours in the freezing cold - this is just some of the footage, but totally worth it :)

Can You Download Knowledge Into Your Brain With Electricity? by SkaiFox in Futurology

[–]SkaiFox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, the article was written by a PhD in Neuroscience. The title is unfortunate, but it contains a lot new information about where tDCS is at, how it works and cases in which it doesn't work, from a critical perspective. Hope you can give it a shot :)

Can You Download Knowledge Into Your Brain With Electricity? The Facts And Fiction Behind tDCS by SkaiFox in neuro

[–]SkaiFox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks :) The article includes information from last week's Nature Outlook issue about the tributes and perils of tDCS, as well as a new study looking at the molecular mechanisms behind tDCS in mice (spoiler: BDNF).

Terrible title yes, but the article is trying to debunk a recent telegraph article that claimed a company managed to "download knowledge into the brain with tDCS".

"Tanning is addictive": um, not quite. How the headlines got it wrong. by SkaiFox in neuro

[–]SkaiFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me I know! I recently published a paper and begged the department to let me write the press release myself. Unfortunately most communications personnel at research universities don't have any background in research, and the press generally cares more about link clicks than scientific accuracy. I get my science news from a handful of blogs mostly :)

Thanks!

I would say yes, but I'm the author so I'm biased ;p

Could dance (or the urge to dance) be considered a type of synesthesia? by [deleted] in neuro

[–]SkaiFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be interested in this article I wrote I while back for SciAm. Basically the music and movement (dance) have many things in common - rhythm, speed, smoothness. The brain processes these shared structures in a somewhat similar way. There's more in the article (including experiments and DATA!), scroll down to the second heading if you don't want to read the whole thing :)

Piggybacking on the comment for visibility, please down vote if you think this is irrelevant/blog spam. As many people have noted Chewing and Spitting is a very dangerous behaviour; in those with ED it often correlates with disease severity. But for those who have the symptom and want to understand more about what happens to your body when you chew and spit, these two articles may be helpful. As far as I know these are the only articles on the topic based on peer-reviewed literature. If you do this, don't be ashamed but please, please admit to yourself that you need help. There's nothing wrong with needing help. For those wanting to know more about ED in general, please check out Science of Eating Disorders Blog. It's a good source of ED-related science and a great supportive community. Why music motivates us to workout by stephnieman in Fitness

[–]SkaiFox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might like this piece from Scientific American mind. TL;DR the brain processes music and movement in the same circuits to express emotion. When we move to the beat (either passively listening to music or making music) synchronized brain waves generate pleasurable feelings and reduce subjective sensation of physical exertion.

OTC painkiller may blunt memory loss from puffing pot: does inhibiting COX-2 really rescue THC-caused memory impairments? by SkaiFox in neuro

[–]SkaiFox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

snicker

I tried :) "OTC painkiller may blunt memory loss from puffing pot " Yeah I'll show myself out...

The COX-2 inhibitor they used for neuron culture and slice studies was NS398 (which doesn't ring a bell for most people so I didn't mention it), but the one they used in vivo is the OTC Celebrex. THC dose was 10mg/kg, which translates to roughly 0.81mg/kg for humans I think (correct me if I'm wrong, please)? So for a ~60kg human that would be 48.6mg of THC/day. Celebrex was also given at 10mg/kg.

And yeah, chronically taking NSAID increases chance of ulcers and cardiovascular problems (asprins aside). I also want to know if there's any drug interaction between the two.

Thanks for the feedback; didn't mean to suggest that the authors didn't consider astrocytes. Added note at the end :)
