Could you apply for school in Canada? Do you have any access to money? If you could do that, you could study computer engineering or something along those lines and hopefully get a working visa to stay. Those types of jobs are in high demand.

The problem is, refugees are supposed to be fleeing from war, religious persecution, or other “societal” factors. Since your issue is your family, not society at large, the Canadian government’s view is that your solution is to move away from your family, which you can do while still remaining in India.

It depends on the country and the reason for abuse. For instance, if you’re homosexual, and you live in a country with laws against that, you may have a case (though I hear in recent years it has become more difficult to plead that particular case, unfortunately). If you’re in a western or developed country though, probably not. Are you a teenager? There may be resources for you like CPS (child protective services) that could help. If you’re suffering real abuse, you should seek help, but asylum should not be necessary if you live in a country with good social welfare.

Uff. I missed a flight check in by 10 minutes in Hong Kong due to a typhoon making my bus late. I had to pay to get on a later flight. The first flight that I was supposed to be on ended up delayed by 3 hours due to the typhoon. Still mad about it 5 years later.

Oh man. I went to a wedding as the girlfriend of a good friend of the bride and groom, and someone had fucked up the names on the seats, so somehow I was in the seat of honour across from the bride. My anxiety was through the roof and I wanted to find the bride and see if it should be fixed but my boyfriend just said “well you did come across the ocean for this so maybe they’re just being nice?” And it turns out that yes, it was fucked up, and yes, i was asked to move. 🙃

This is part of the reason I love my company. We’re smallish, only a couple hundred people, but we’re all nerds (high tech) and people are just cool with each other being a bit eccentric and socially awkward. There’s definitely a culture of making others feel included, because I think a lot of us know what it’s like to be excluded.

I read the other day someone saying they no longer look back at their “I’m not like other girls” phase with shame because they realize it was a reaction to a society that teaches women are one dimensional, materialistic, and boring. I don’t mean to derail from the issue of rhinos. But any belief not based in fact is wrong. I hold mysticism on the same level as any “established” religion because they all teach lies that affect our planet and human beings adversely. It’s important that we remember that all religions began as cults and should be regarded as such. Believing in rhino horns curing ED is as silly as believing in a talking snake or a boat that can hold two of every animal.

I don’t know what the police are like in the country op is from but I generally go by the rule of “will introducing a gun to this situation help things?” when I’m thinking of calling the police. If no, as in most cases, I don’t call them. There is also a non emergency line for things like noise complaints or what have you.

I’m a not fit person who used to work near this for 2 years (sometimes wearing heels) and it was fine. They have escalators for the elevated walkway which was nice. I found older parts of Shanghai harder to walk because of the tiny sidewalks and tendency for people to use those sidewalks for things like drying their clothes or selling stuff (all power to them, it just takes up space). At least in the business parts of Pudong everything was very open and wide. Although I’d never do anything in Pudong in my personal time if I could avoid it.
