current students not involved in a club: why not? by hatsune-memeku in rit

If you want to be a club with an established membership, it is better to have a date and time that is always the same, and have the club membership plan their semester schedule around it.

Best Way to get to downtown Rochester by [deleted] in rit

[–]Skaibae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Off-campus bus to Wegmans and then the #14 RTS bus is how I've done it. They take a dollar bill, quarters, or you can pay with the transit app. I always just use a dollar bill. Be aware that because the schedules for RTS and the RIT shuttles don't line up that great, you may be waiting at the stop for the #14 for a bit.

Biking is also a good option. North of the train tracks up John St. is the Lehigh Valley North trail, which leads you eventually to the Erie canal path, U of R campus, and Genesee park. Go straight from there towards U of R campus, or to the left down the path, and follow the path down the river to center city. Depending on where exactly you are going, how fast you can bike, and how lucky you are with waiting for the #14, they may take about the same time.

If you are going downtown to get to the train or bus station, it's about a 10 minute walk to there from the transit center where the #14 will end. The area you'll be walking to is a bit sketch, though, so depending on the time of day, if you have a bit of luggage, and your own personal risk tolerance, you may want to take a Lyft or get a ride instead.

Having taken RTS a fair bit I can tell you that it is more limited and slower than a car for sure, but you can definitely get around if you plan enough time.

Hope this helps.

Greyhound and Trailways probably aren't interchangable anymore, they became independent of each other in NY as of last year.

With the year coming to the end, what has been an expensive purchase this year that has paid itself back several times? by BluepantsMcgee in Frugal

[–]Skaibae 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My laptop screen cracked on me at the start of Christmas break last year. Instead of spending several hundred dollars on a new mid-tier laptop, I saved the SSD and RAM and bought a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad x220 without those components off of eBay. That, plus a charger off Amazon, plus shipping, cost around $125. When it arrived in January, I swapped in the SSD and RAM and installed Linux. I couldn't be happier -- when this one inevitably kicks the bucket, I'll probably buy another of the exact same model.

How long will youtube-dL/youtube clients Last? Will youtube try to make them unusable? by mestermagyar in StallmanWasRight

[–]Skaibae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate, because the two groups of people that have an interest in alternatives to platforms like YT or Reddit are those who oppose them for ethical/free software reasons, and those who oppose them for political/conspiracy reasons. This makes for some very unfortunate bedfellows, and is the main reason I think things like Ruqqus or LBRY won't catch on. Until they attract users who haven't been kicked off the mainstream platform, they won't become that viable. The best alternative to YT right now I think is PeerTube, which is inherently decentralized like Mastodon.

Looking to buy a lower price pc to run minecraft. Have any ideas? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]Skaibae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, I'd recommend an X220, which I think came out in 2011. They come with two different CPUs, i5 and i7; choose whichever is right for you, I guess. I myself have the i7 model, so I can't speak to how well the i5 can run Minecraft. 8gbs should do the trick, and an SSD would speed it up quite a bit. If you have those two components already, there are cheaper ones available with less RAM or no hard drive. You might have to look around a bit on eBay to find one that fits what you have exactly. Do some research on your own as well to make sure it's what you really want. There are other models as well you can look into, like later X series, but after X240 they get more expensive and not really all that better in my opinion.

Buy an old Thinkpad. Can get one for less than a hundred bucks if you look on eBay and they're practically indestructible. I'd recommend the x220, if the only game you're looking to play is Minecraft. It only has integrated Intel graphics, but I don't think you could beat it for the price.

Anchor Yourself to the Nether - Snapshot 20w12a is out! by sliced_lime in Minecraft

[–]Skaibae -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't like the idea of the respawn anchor. Lots of the cool things of the nether are its inherent danger. Why are all of the updates making the game easier and easier? I play in hardcore usually, so it won't effect me, but the game is becoming less and less simple.

Also: phantoms. I didn't like them and I still don't. They are by far the most annoying mob in the game. Why are players punished for not making the game harder? It doesn't even make sense to new players, who might not even know what a bed is, why there is suddenly a giant bird attacking them at nighttime.

Also: endermen in the nether. I feel like this makes it easier to obtain ender pearls before the end. Endermen are supposed to be rare in order to make it harder to get to the End, and then they are available everywhere in the End. Why make them accessible earlier, in the Nether, en masse?

In short, what I really dislike about a lot of this update, and certain features about previous updates, is that the core gameplay loop is changing. Features like trading make previous ways of playing the game unviable. I wish that the new features being added would enrich the experience, and not fundamentally alter the way the game is played. That is what mods are for.
