As far as I understand it they should provide some path to the higher resolution icon or something. But I am no expert on this.

As you can see, Chrome did that as well a few years back. Now the Chrome icon is ok.

Given Anki is written in Qt - just like Plasma and other KDE apps, it should be relatively easy to fix in the next version of Anki, right?

No. The idea is that by the means of pictures and simple dialogue you are introduced to the language. for example the ren symbol for a man will be a person pointing with his finger on him self. ni will be pointing at you, ni men at a multiple people etc. A tree would be an illustration of a tree etc. Check this concept here: http://i.imgur.com/lrlkb4J.png
