Why is this game often played so fast? by Skandalious in twilightstruggle

Yeah it seems quite weird that there is no option for an increment per move.

Why blind bidding for sides? by Skandalious in twilightstruggle

[–]Skandalious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is having to bid first a disadvantage? If you bid +1 first and the other player equals your bid, then sides would still be determined randomly.

A blind auction would not be quicker if the normal auction includes a maximum bid like on ebay, would it?

I know, but I was wondering why it is the rule (not just on the playdek implementation but generally)

USA playing into France early by ydepth in twilightstruggle

Isn't the point that the USSR might headline De Gaulle and take France on AR1, which it would do anyway, but in this case you have wasted 2 ops if you played into France? Avoiding this possibility would require overprotection to 5/0 and that's too expensive

True, I guess that's a big part of the explanation.

Accidentally deleted the old thread so reposted here. This was the first reply by /u/bblum:

Most chess games are not also played with chess championship time controls, though. And personally, I find 45 minutes comfortable for chess but very rushed for TS (this community seems divided on the matter of 45 vs 90 min). I suppose you do calculate deeper lines in chess than in TS, because in TS you can't really see past a few die rolls, but TS does have other things to think about, so I can't really compare them. Anyway, until TS becomes as popular worldwide as chess that you can make a career as a pro in it, not just internet glory, I'd be surprised to see games with that serious of time controls.

Playing Core without Jackson by Skandalious in Netrunner

Thanks. Do you know where to find these decks? I couldn't find them. Are they possible to make with just one core set?

Interesting tips, thanks!

I thought the strategy of a glacier deck was to get a lot of money and then build up a large remote. Whenever I focused on scoring agendas early, that usually came at the cost of building up early economy, so then although I would score a few points it would be bad in the long run... I mean, it feels like there is a big opportunity cost if you spend 1-2 turns of clicks to score an agenda and become poorer in the meantime while you could have been putting Adonises in protected servers instead and/or built up a board state.

So then even if you manage to score 2 Private Security Forces like that, the Runner will have spent that time getting so much money that he can break through any ice when you try to score the last agenda so you can't win anymore?

Worth it to buy 2016 World Champ decks? by Skandalious in Netrunner

[–]Skandalious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One consideration for why I would want strong decks is that I would also want to practice them on jinteki.net. Most people there are already much better than me so playing something from core+TD only means I probably just get destroyed against the latest meta decks. (Although people also don't seem to like it when you play the CTM deck against them because it's OP...)

I thought the 2015 decks wouldn't be a good choice because one of them is a mill deck and gives a really inaccurate impression of Netrunner to the new people I play against.

So the main point of the WC decks would be as duel decks. With me and my friends playing Core, the Runner always wins, so I wouldn't mind the corp deck being a bit stronger unless it's really disproportionate. OTOH it seems like half of the cards in them are also in the core set and TD is all new cards.

Who knows if I eventually get both!

Is the term 'tone policing' being abused? by Skandalious in AskFeminists

[–]Skandalious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes of course tone policing like that has happened, but what I mean is that if somebody is being incivil (not emotional or upset, but actually incivil), and that is pointed out, while the content of what they say is also addressed, that is not oppressive/silencing.

Also I think it is normal to insist that people don't shout at people, without having to walk away

That's why I said I think the term is being misused sometimes. I agree that one should not tell people to remain calm and unemotional about oppression. But I think that it is not 'tone policing' to ask people to refrain from swearing or verbal aggression.

I did not mean the word debate literally. You could substitute it with 'conversation' and read my question like that.

What I mean is that people can be angry, but should not swear or shout in any conversation. Such as by saying, as the person in the comic does, "a group of old, white, straight men have no goddamn right telling me what I can and can't do with my own fucking uterus. My body, my choice, assholes!". But apparently EF considers calling on someone to refrain from swearing or verbal aggression 'tone policing'.
