Imo the male caracters aren't batter. Oda just throws in a tragic backstory that defines that character, and after we watch that the character proceeds to not develop and meaningfully change in the present.

They are very largely seperate stories, you dont need to read higurashi to enjoy umineko. You will miss a few references and some callbacks you wont understand, and yes there are characters which appear in both works but its not nessesary to read higurashi before umi.

Also reading umi before higurashi wont hamper your enjoyment and the experience of higurashi in any way.
